Suella Braverman back as home secretary after resigning (BBC News)

The Cabinet minister resigned six days ago under former PM Liz Truss, after admitting two data breaches.

"I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign," she told the PM in her letter, in a thinly-veiled dig at Ms Truss. In her resignation letter last week, Ms Braverman said she had made a "technical infringement" of the rules by sending an official document from a personal email and was now taking responsibility. Ms Braverman threw her support behind Mr Sunak in the contest to replace Ms Truss, in what was widely seen as a significant endorsement by an MP on the right-wing of the Tory party.

'She has apologised': Minister defends reappointment of Suella ... (Evening Standard)

James Cleverly dismissed suggestion that Home Secretary's support for Mr Sunak led to her being given back her job.

She has enjoyed a rapid rise through the party, running in the last leadership race to replace Mr Johnson with a promise of "rapid and large tax cuts" and saying she would suspend net-zero targets to deal with the energy crisis and pull the UK out of the European Convention on Human Rights. Ms Braverman is a controversial figure and raised eyebrows as Home Secretary when she accused opposition parties of being a "coalition of chaos" during a debate in Parliament on the Public Order Bill. Mr Braverman, a senior figure on the Tory Right, is seen to have been a crucial backer for Mr Sunak as he and Boris Johnson were still locked in a race for the Tory leadership and to be the next Prime Minister. “She has apologised for that and the Prime Minister has clearly taken the apology in the manner that she wanted to put across. Foreign secretary dismisses concerns, saying 'Suella made a mistake and she has apologised'

Alistair Graham told the Guardian: “Normally, the prime minister would have consulted a ministerial adviser for advice. The former Downing Street chief of staff Gavin Barwell has said he would not have given Braverman the role. Asked if her reappointment undermined Sunak’s claim to be a prime minister of integrity, Barwell told Today: “I can entirely understand why he wanted to include her. “Suella made a mistake and she has apologised for that mistake,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. Sunak, the new prime minister, appointed Braverman as home secretary in his first cabinet this week. According to a Sunday Times report, Braverman had not been entirely forthcoming when initially confronted about her actions.

Names hopefully floated around as the reshuffle took place included George Eustice, the former secretary of state under Boris Johnson, and Victoria Prentis, a former minister at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) who is popular in the farming sector. He also told the Guardian that it would “definitely enhance transparency” if contact between consultant lobbyists and special advisers was brought under the regime. Now we have a new prime minister and the prospect of much longer-term stability for the economy and the country. He understands the reasons for doing that, and I’ll continue to work very closely with him. It’s also extremely important that that statement is based on the most accurate possible economic forecasts and forecasts of public finances. I want to confirm that it will demonstrate debt falling over the medium term, which is very important for people to understand. The chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has confirmed that his fiscal statement has been postponed to 17 November. His record in office is already a serious cause for concern for what’s on the horizon for struggling families and businesses. Her statement could signal hope that she is moving away from divisive policies such as scrapping nature-friendly farming incentives, banning solar farms and attacking the RSPB.
