Charlton 4-4 Ipswich Town: Wild game at The Valley (Ipswich Star)

This game looked heading towards a draw at 2-2, entering time added on, after George Edmundson (45+3) and Tyreece John-Jules (53) had put Town two-up, only for ...

The 3,139 Ipswich fans in the away end were bouncing but things became nervy 10 minutes later, when a lofted ball from the Charlton right drifted over the head of Janoi Donacien to allow Chuks Aneke the chance to shoot. Ipswich’s two-goal advantage should have been restored, though, when Leif Davis’s ball from the left saw John-Jules rise well and head at goa. Ball’s driving run into Charlton territory made it, with the midfielder brought down to win a free-kick which Chaplin curled into the wall. But Ladapo came up trumps for the Blues as the game entered added time, firing in from the edge of the box to give Ipswich a lead which soon became two, when Morsy fired home from outside the box. John-Jules was pleading for a penalty after superbly stepping inside and firing off a shot which appeared to flash wide off of the arm of Thomas, but the frustrations soon evaporated as Edmundson towered above his man to thump home the result corner with his head. Ipswich looked to have won it when Freddie Ladapo drove home from outside the box (90+1) to send the 3,000-strong away crowd wild and put Town 3-2 up, before Sam Morsy (90+4) surely made the points safe with a strike from the edge of the area.

Charlton Athletic 4-4 Ipswich Town: Player ratings (East Anglian Daily Times)

Ipswich Town drew 4-4 with Charlton Athletic in a dramatic game at The Valley this afternoon. Andy Warren hands out his player ratings.

Jackson’s pace looked like it could cause problems for the Addicks this afternoon as he worked his way up and down the left flank, without having too many opportunities to wriggle free in the first half. His blocked free-kick led to Town’s second goal as he recovered the rebound and lad the ball back for Burns to cross for John-Jules. A quiet afternoon in many respects for the Welshman, who did have some bright moments and showed flashes of good footwork without being able to threaten the Charlton box enough. The skipper was up for this game as he returned from a ban and was in the thick of the action throughout, battling away, looking to get on the ball and drive and hearing the referee’s whistle ringing in his ears at times too. Took the brunt of Jayden Stockley’s early fire in this game, engaging in the physical battle and doing a solid job before sending home a towering header to open the scoring just before half-time. Town’s right side wasn’t at its attacking best in this one, with Donacien sitting deep for much of the game and struggling to get forward to support Burns on too many occasions.

Charlton Athletic 0-1 Ipswich Town - Half-Time - Ipswich Town News (TWTD.co.uk)

George Edmundson's injury time goal has given the Blues a 1-0 half-time lead over Charlton at the Valley.

However, Chaplin in any case won a corner and before it was taken referee Josh Smith indicated to the fourth official that someone in the crowd was using a whistle. The Town players protested to referee Smith that they should have been awarded a penalty but to no avail. However, from the resultant corner, the Blues went in front. Addicks skipper Jayden Stockley seized on it but hit a first-time shot straight back to the relieved keeper. On 14 Egbo succumbed to his earlier knock and was replaced by Albie Morgan. Former Town midfielder Scott Fraser started in the home side’s midfield.

The Tractor Boys, having already seen a two-goal lead disappear in the second half, had themselves scored twice in added time through Freddie Ladapo and Sam Morsy to seemingly secure all three points. Edge-of-the-box strikes from Ladapo and Morsy looked to have won it for Ipswich in stoppage time but Thomas halved the deficit from inside the six-yard box and the Addicks weren’t done. The first half started brightly for the hosts, who pressed high as they looked to ensure Ipswich weren’t allowed the control they have established in so many of their games this term, but they were forced into a change inside the first 15 minutes when Mandela Egbo limped off to be replaced by Morgan. Freddie Ladapo and Sam Morsy looked to have won it for Ipswich but Terell Thomas and George Dobson ensured the points were shared in a crazy finish in south London.

Charlton Athletic 4-4 Ipswich Town: Seven observations (Ipswich Star)

Ipswich Town drew 4-4 at Charlton Athletic in the most dramatic of League One games yesterday. STUART WATSON reflects on the action.

Town are the topscorers in the division. Ipswich players got swept up in the emotion of it all and allowed their focus to slip. The Blues are 13 points up on what they had at this stage of last season. We'll be looking to do the work on the training ground to help us do that." The six minutes of stoppage-time are now up. Ball jumped on Morsy's back and rode him towards the away end. Luke Woolfenden almost joined them when leaping on the top of the advertsiing hoardings. His downward effort hit the legs of keeper Joe Wollacott though. Christian Walton kept the shot out with his legs, but Jes Rak-Sayki was there to stab in. Having been benched after a two-goal display at Port Vale in midweek the front man pointed to the name on the back of his shirt in celebration. And he thought goalscorer John-Jules was offside when Wes Burns delivered from the right. PLEASE STOP IT," he said, to collective cheers, before adding that the players would be asked to leave the field if it happened again.

Ed Sheeran's "absolutely golden" reaction to Ipswich chaos with ... (Mirror.co.uk)

Music megastar Ed Sheeran has been spotted reacting in disbelief after his beloved Ipswich Town blew a two-goal lead in stoppage time in an eight-goal ...

[Join the debate!](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/ed-sheeran-reaction-ipswich-charlton-28363490#comments-section) Can you think of a more dramatic finale than the conclusion to Saturday's match between Charlton and Ipswich? "We showed great character after 2-2 and at 96 minutes we put ourselves into a position that we have to win the game from. "I'm so proud of the players," he said. "They are the strongest team in the division and we went toe to toe with them for long periods and were better than them for long periods of the game." "There is obviously a lot of frustration, anger and disappointment in the dressing room at the manner of the goals we conceded. Sheeran, who has sponsored the club's playing kits for the last two seasons, is an avid Ipswich Town fan and is a regular at the club's Portman Road stadium - and his reaction to the chaos at the Valley has been dubbed "absolutely golden" by one fan who highlighted the Shape of You megastar on social media.

Charlton Athletic 4 Ipswich Town 4: Kieran McKenna verdict (Ipswich Star)

Ipswich Town drew 4-4 at Charlton Athletic following the most dramatic of finishes to a game. Here's what Blues boss Kieran McKenna had to say…

"There's a part of me that wants to focus on the repeatable. I don't think us getting the late goals was a one out of 100 moment, I thought we were pushing and building towards it. "Of course this is not the first time we have given up the lead. And of course to get it in front of our away end was fantatsic. We'll be looking to do the work on the training ground to help us do that." Sometimes the ball falls one way and sometimes it goes another. We've come out of it with seven points, lots of positives and some clear areas to work on." "My feelings at the moment is that it wasn't a lack of concentration, certainly not sloppiness. I think if we played the last three minutes over it wouldn't happen again. It was obviously a rollercoaster of emotions," said McKenna, whose side missed out on a chance to go top of the League One table. Of course there are different goals in there, but if there's a common theme then it is dealing with high balls into our box. I always believed we were going to score again, though I didn't think we would score two more.

Kevin Nolan's Valley View: Charlton Athletic 4-4 Ipswich Town (The Charlton Champion)

Nobody who was there will forget the crazy conclusion to the Addicks' hard-fought draw with the Tractor Boys. KEVIN NOLAN stayed until the end to bring you ...

But that was to reckon without the impact provided by perennial substitute Chuks Aneke and speed merchant Blackett-Taylor. Blackett-Taylor had the bit between his teeth now and his crisp daisycutter was kept out with difficulty by the suddenly overworked Walton, whose luck ran out as Morgan hurriedly jabbed the loose ball past him. Aneke was his usual irrepressible self, all but impossible to subdue and too strong for a tiring defence. Town’s hysterical celebrations were seen and raised by the human pyramid which took shape in front of the Covered End. That ambition was thwarted in the last minute when George Edmundson bulleted Davis’ inswinging corner off Woollacott’s hand and under the bar. An early replacement for the wretchedly unlucky Mandela Egbo, Albie Morgan had provided sketchy support for beleaguered Sean Clare but going forward proved a force to be reckoned with. As the jubilant visitors celebrated wildly in front of their fans, an unseemly exodus of home fans began to pour through the various exits. Referee Josh Smith didn’t get much right but deserves credit for knowing how to tell the time. A minute later, a more speculative drive from skipper Sam Morsy caught a faint deflection before settling decisively in the bottom right corner. So buckle up and make the necessary allowances for a less than objective version of events. Having surrendered a two-goal lead, Ipswich were understandably disappointed with the 2-2 scoreline; Charlton on the other hand, had salvaged a valuable point and could be satisfied with their afternoon’s work. KEVIN NOLAN stayed until the end to bring you this report.

Charlton Athletic 4 Ipswich Town 4: Terry Hunt on ITFC (East Anglian Daily Times)

I know, I know - if you take away the emotion, there are positives. Just look at the league table. We're in such a great position. East Anglian Daily Times: ...

Remember the pain at Lincoln. McKenna keeps rotating the front three on a game-by-game basis. So I thought it was a bit odd that he was dropped on Saturday. It’s a footballing cliche that 2-0 is a dangerous scoreline for the team which is ahead. Surely he is worth an extended run as a starter? It would be tough on them, but football is a ruthless business. The debate about our strikers continues. I just can’t stop doing the “what ifs.” You know - what if we’d held on to win at Sheffield Wednesday? Pulling a goal back can be a real momentum changer. Just look at the league table. I know, I know - if you take away the emotion, there are positives. It felt like a terrible defeat.
