Royal Mail pay offer is 'declaration of war on posties', says union (The Guardian)

CWU says firm's offer of below-inflation pay rise and changes to work practices are unacceptable.

The strikes and a decline in parcel volumes have previously prompted Royal Mail to warn that it may need to cut up to 10,000 roles by next August. This once again demonstrates that the need for change at Royal Mail is urgent.” The Guardian understands that talks between Royal Mail and the CWU have not broken down, and the company is urging the union to put its latest pay offer to members. The CWU said the company was trying to bring in new workers on “lower terms” and accused it of “introducing owner-drivers into Royal Mail – a service that will be comparable to Uber.” Royal Mail said the offer was subject to the CWU agreeing to a programme of changes to working patterns at the 500-year-old firm, including alterations to Sunday shifts, different start times and more flexible working. Royal Mail’s chief executive, Simon Thompson, said on Monday: “Royal Mail made a loss of £219m in the first half of the year.

Royal Mail bosses go on attack after 'legal threat' saw strikes called off (Socialist Worker)

CWU union leaders have called off six planned days of Royal Mail strikes over the next two weeks after bosses threatened a legal challenge.

The CWU’s head of communications Chris Webb said that many workers online had responded to the news with anger at bosses—and at union leaders. And be prepared to defy the law. Now there are reports of Royal Mail managers docking pay and refusing overtime in a bid to turn the screw on workers. Now union leaders say they’ll meet to discuss the future of the action. “And it has been hard to focus on the negotiations when you’re also out on strike. Announcing the decision to call off strikes, CWU general secretary Dave Ward said the union had received a letter from Royal Mail lawyers on Friday. The CWU said its postal executive would meet to call further strikes. And whenever Ward reports on positive-sounding talks with Thompson’s underlings, Thompson pops up to say it’s rubbish. The CWU said bosses “have also confirmed that as of tomorrow, they are introducing lesser terms for new entrants and owner drivers into Royal Mail.” But he added that after calling strikes off, union leaders would focus on negotiations with bosses at conciliation service Acas. But, in a move that workers and their union leaders should Royal Mail said it was a 7 percent rise over two years, plus a lump sum payment of 2 percent this year.

Royal Mail strike: When is the next strike and which planned dates ... (Evening Standard)

Postal workers began a 19-day series of strikes this month, with the latest taking place on October 20.

“We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience the CWU’s continued strike action will cause. Rather than responding to our offer of Acas talks, the CWU announced further damaging industrial action, once again taking the path of prolonging disruption over resolution. “The CWU has a responsibility to recognise the reality of the situation Royal Mail faces as a business and engage urgently on the changes required. During strike days, special delivery parcels should still get to their destination, and Covid-19 test kits and prescriptions would be prioritised, said Royal Mail. A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “On September 22, Royal Mail invited CWU to enter into talks through Acas to find a resolution to our dispute on change and pay. Royal Mail said: “We will be starting the process of consulting on rightsizing the business in response to the impact of industrial action, delays in delivering agreed productivity improvements and lower parcel volumes.”

Planned strikes by Royal Mail workers in November have been called off following a challenge by the company.

“Simon can’t dodge the reality that a mood of rebellion is sweeping postal workers who won’t accept Thompson’s hostile and bizarre behaviour. CWU general secretary Dave Ward said: “Instead of sitting down and sorting out his problems like an adult, Simon Thompson chose to be a vanishing act instead. The postal service will not be delivering letters on these days, with the exception of Special Delivery. “Royal Mail and CWU have planned talks at Acas tomorrow, Monday October 31. The CMU said that following a letter from Royal Mail’s legal team, it has decided to withdraw industrial action notices over the next fortnight. A series of strikes have taken place in recent weeks and more action had been planned in the run-up to Christmas.

UK: Strike cancellation provokes workers' fury as Royal Mail ... (WSWS)

Royal Mail CEO Simon Thompson has demonstrated from the start that the company has no intention of behaving “reasonably”. The CWU has announced a mass meeting for tomorrow (Tuesday, November 1) at 7pm, but Royal Mail workers must take the initiative. We urge Royal Mail workers who agree with this fight to Even now, they are on their knees offering an “alternative business plan” to help Royal Mail boost profits and facilitate restructuring, just as they did in last year’s Pathway to Change agreement. The strikes are designed to put pressure on the company to behave more reasonably in those negotiations.” The strikes are not the objective. “Should have a week’s strike” was a common response, along with “another sellout”, “I want to cancel my membership”, “union bent over and took it from behind again”, “all out [on strike] for F***’s sake” and “These guys are in bed with the Tories”. Others wrote, “embarrassing”, “farce”, “bottled it”, “bullshit” and “you only had one job”. On Sunday, the CWU’s decision to cancel strikes provoked fury among 15,000 Royal Mail workers who attended the union’s online “update” meeting. Neither did the CWU set out the legal advice provided by their own lawyers, despite citing this as their reason for cancelling strikes. Royal Mail’s announcement has blown the CWU’s corporatist strategy out of the water. So that will be no strike action over the next two weeks.”

This week's Royal Mail strikes called off (PCS)

The action by CWU would have disrupted postal services including the delivery of PCS ballot papers to the independent scrutineers.

We had previously recommended that if you haven’t yet voted, you should post your ballot paper by 31 October. The union said that after a letter from Royal Mail’s legal team, it has decided to withdraw industrial action notices for the next two weeks. Six days of planned strikes by CWU members working for the Royal Mail have been called off after a challenge by the company.
