In the new season of HBO's The White Lotus, the rich have wandering eyes and intimate desires—and their wallets can satisfy only so much.
“I do what I want,” one character explains deep into the season about putting up with their partner’s habit of cheating, “so I’m not resentful.” In the end, the show suggests, everyone is alone. White seems to take particular pleasure in illustrating the passive aggression flowing between the pair of married couples: Cameron is a model of machismo, Daphne is the daffy housewife who may or may not have voted in the last election, and Harper believes she sees right through them. Murray Abraham), dad Dominic (Michael Imperioli), and son Albie (Adam DiMarco)—who are ostensibly visiting the small town their family’s from but who are each distracted by love interests and sexual prospects. They’re giving much of their wealth to charities, because, she boasts, they’re “not materialistic.” And yet, Cameron and Daphne seem so chic, so in love. And there are sojourns away from the resort itself, placing the wealthy characters in new contexts, aboard yachts and in rented palazzos. They’re traveling with the finance bro Cameron (Theo James) and his cheery wife, Daphne (Meghann Fahy), who seem to live an Instagram-perfect life of vacations and not reading the news. There’s Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and Ethan (Will Sharpe), a newly rich couple thanks to Ethan’s start-up, who are just getting their bearings on the tax bracket they’ve recently entered. Even Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge), the lone leading character to return from the preceding season, is horny: She’s now married to Greg (Jon Gries), whom she met back in Hawaii, but their relationship has soured, and she’s desperate to keep his interest. Money plays a constant role, an elephant in the bedroom. Created by Mike White, The White Lotus became an unexpected hit for the way its first season skewered the wealthiest of the wealthy by combining absurd humor with sharp commentary on colonialism, racial politics, and class. Down at the toe of Italy’s boot, lust hangs in the air. As a receptionist informs the newly arrived guests in the second season of HBO’s The White Lotus, the objects represent a tragic folktale: When Sicily was occupied by the Moors centuries ago, a young Moorish man seduced a Sicilian girl, but after she learned that he had a family back home, she beheaded him and used his skull as a vase.
The San Domenico Palace Four Seasons has welcomed Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth Taylor, Truman Capote, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren.
Anyway, all this high-living comes at a finance-bro Cam-level costs: a superior room starts at €648 a night, while a night in the Teatro suite – with views of the ancient Greek theatre – starts at €4,812. While the elite, five-star resorts of The White Lotus are obviously fictional, there is indeed an actual resort in Sicily that the series was filmed in.
Season two transports us from Hawaii to Sicily for more rich people escapades.

The White Lotus returns with a fresh new cast of jetsetters, a Sicillian location, and murder(s) to unpack.
It makes for a more nuanced watch as all of the players seem more evenly matched in their boorish behavior which earns them all parity when it comes to the odds of any of them ending up floating dead in the ocean. White seems to push Albie into the toxic masculinity of his family and ask if he will forge new ground or succumb to their legacy as he’s tempted himself. It’s a far slower burn of a cumulative story, but it’s achieving less garish extremes which is welcome in distinguishing this season as an entirely different and worthwhile experience. Plaza is especially good as the bristly cactus of the group who isn’t wrong for having her haunches up in their company. Woven amongst their stories are the adventures of two local young women, Lucia (Simona Tabasco) and Mia (Beatrice Grannò). Lucia has been booked as a prostitute by an incoming guest so she talks Mia into joining her to take advantage of the hotel luxuries during their downtime. The exploration of the Di Grasso men is a bit more traditional with them embodying the season’s overall theme of infidelity. Murray Abraham), middle-aged Dom (Michael Imperioli), and his college grad son, Albie (Adam DiMarco); the wealthy, married vacationing couples, Cameron (Theo James) and Daphne Babcock (Meghann Fahy), and Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and Ethan Spiller (Will Sharpe); and Jennifer Coolidge’s flighty and needy Tanya McQuoid and her now husband, Greg (Jon Gries), who are the only carry-over characters from Season 1. When The White Lotus Season 1 came to its heightened, histrionic conclusion, I was among those who wondered if a second season was needed or warranted. As much as I enjoyed the blackly comedic exploration of the rich eating everything good around them, what else was left to tell?
The White Lotus has returned for a second season after a hugely successful first outing that won 10 Emmys, and Theo James is part of the new cast.
The White Lotus season 2 will premiere on HBO Max in the US on October 30. Season one airs on HBO Max or HBO Go in the US, while viewers in the UK can watch it on Sky Atlantic, Sky Go and Now TV. But he is also a decent, respectful family man. In the season's opening episode, Babcock follows Aubrey Plaza's Harper Spiller to her hotel room so he can borrow a pair of swim shorts from her husband. The show has switched up Maui for Sicily and introduces a host of new characters for season two, with James joining as Cameron Babcock. It is true, Theo is a lovely man, beautiful even.

Who will be the killer(s) and victim(s) this season? The girl spent most of her time alone, often out on her balcony tending to her plants and flowers. Later, the girl discovered that her new lover was already married, and was set to head back to his home country to be with his wife and children. On top of this, he never replied to any of her texts while she was traveling to the resort—also blaming that on work. When she puts on lingerie and makes moves on him when she first arrives he says, “What, now?” and stalks out of the room. We can blame this on the creepy statues of heads placed in every room at the White Lotus. Later, she finds two had been moved somewhere else (did he move them?) and when she brings them to him, she hears him whispering on the phone in the bathroom. When they ask why she can’t sleep and whether it’s the stress of her job, she says it’s that but also “everything that’s going on in the world.” When pressed, she’s not sure how to respond. Harper is also annoyed at the public displays of affection Daphne and Cameron constantly assault her eyes with, insisting that it must be fake. I quote her line up at the top of this post because it’s such a perfect line to open this story with. Harper asks Daphne what she does all day if she doesn’t watch the news and she says that she looks after their kids and loves to watch Dateline. In the first episode of the anthology series, a guest of the fancy hotel has drowned.

It’s a story of precarity: with the Aids crisis as a backdrop and social strife a constant, everyone from Hanif Kureishi to Holly Johnson went for broke and created art that gripped and transgressed. As Christine decides a DNA test is in order, daughter Megan makes the most of her mum’s lateness and invites him to her hen do. As was the case in the first season, we are tipped off from the outset that not everyone will survive the week but the mystery element takes a back seat to White’s scabrous repartee.

Lessons from vacation — and monsters from White Lotus — highlight this week's Monday Finish (plus a little golf, too.)
It’s a strong field as LPGA pros gun for late-season CME Globe points, with Danielle Kang, Minjee Lee and Nasa Hataoka among the big names in attendance. It wasn’t one of the PGA Tour’s beefier fields, to put it mildly. They say they remain in talks with broadcast partners and they’ll dodge things like major championships and the NFL season. But it’s clear that LIV pulled off the mega-millions event they’d planned for all season, distributing a whole boatload of cash in the process. But that was to be expected during football season, and while limited interest seems like a strike against LIV, it might not be quite so simple. With every action comes an opposite reaction, and it’s worth tipping our cap to Scheffler for his run at the top. Plenty of golf courses are parts of resorts, and even those that aren’t remain firmly in the service industry. [last week’s CJ Cup](https://golf.com/news/rory-mcilroy-gave-golf-fans-everything/), where McIlroy out-dueled Jon Rahm and a star-studded field down the stretch in what must have been the PGA Tour’s best event of the fall season. And as we arrived at our hotel via water-taxi, welcomed by a small group of waving Hilton employees, that’s where my mind went: Season 1, Episode 1 of White Lotus, when hotel manager Armond (think Ian Baker-Finch with a mustache) and a gaggle of smiling staffers line up to greet a new group of guests. Monsters who take full advantage of employees’ place in the guest-staffer dynamic.

That's like an illness to want so much more instead of looking at what we have already and connecting with that and appreciating that.” (This comes up again later in the season). “[Portia] needs to do the effort that it really takes to find the real meaning of life; she's very much stuck and lost,” she says. I'm here and this is really disappointing in many different ways.” And not only that, but a fear that now that you have the thing that was supposedly supposed to make you feel fulfilled, you’re obligated to stick with it. In many ways, these characters’ dissatisfaction is a commentary on society’s stagnation, and the fact that, despite many people who are unhappy with their circumstances most likely won’t do anything about it. She books a romantic vacay, but her husband doesn’t respond to her messages in the day leading up to it; she dons sexy lingerie, but has a panic attack midway through the deed, pushing her husband off her as she tells him she pictured him with shark eyes, “just dead, completely dead.” Do I have to face the mirror and realise that I projected all of this onto that person [and] it was a false projection?” “I feel like I’ve just been stuck at home just doom scrolling on my phone for the last three years, and I finally get out of there and I’m in Italy and she just told me that I have to stay in my room the whole time.” She sobs. I think maybe deep down inside it comes from a place of maybe [Harper] does feel threatened by someone that just seems like they have it all together.” Even if it just appears that way from the outside. “She’s a little bit miserable [and] there are so many things that are stereotypical and pretty extreme about her angst, her desperation, her humor in a way, her disposition in the world.” Specifically, through the characters of Tanya, Portia, and Harper, the series not only makes a commentary on society’s perpetual desire for more, but also makes viewers question whether or not we can ever truly be happy. — it ultimately comes from a place of jealousy, something Ethan (Will Sharpe) points out later in the season. After following Tanya to Italy, an experience and trip she was hoping to kickstart her desire for a life of adventure, she’s told she has to stay in her room the whole time to appease Tanya’s husband.
