He has adopted a distinctly Trumpian approach to his plight – slamming the investigations as a “witch hunt” and an “attempted coup” and, like the former US president, has raised doubts about the legitimacy of the judiciary. He made the announcement after Sunak said he wouldn’t attend owing to the demands of salvaging the British economy, though there have been reports in recent days that he might change his mind. Conservative MPs opted instead for former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, who has only been in power for a week but is already finding out what many observers believe to be the case – that the Conservative Party is ungovernable. Even if Trump doesn’t run in 2024, the power of his movement is so strong in the GOP that a possible future Republican president would likely share his populist, nationalist, “America First” instincts. There had been fears that Bolsonaro would emulate his US alter ego and fellow Covid-19 mask rejectionist by refusing to accept the result of an election that tipped him out of power after only a single term. Bolsonaro and Lula da Silva aren’t the only blasts from the past who’ve tried to pave a way back to power. Still, the comeback trail is not always kind to populist leaders who have fallen from power. Lula da Silva, a former two-term president of Brazil, has, like Trump, had his run-ins with legal authorities. And on Sunday in Brazil, Lula da Silva, who’s known as “Lula,” narrowly defeated President Jair Bolsonaro in a runoff election. Trump has left no doubt that he’s itching to mount another presidential campaign – not just because he misses the spotlight. Past scandals, their own legal nightmares and treacherous politics aren’t stopping them from recreating that dream of a past glory. Trump would love to plow a similar furrow.

Donald Trump joins the Paul Pelosi conspiracy caucus (CNN)

Just days removed from the assault on Paul Pelosi, Donald Trump is throwing in his lot with the conspiracy caucus on what actually happened in the attack.

He knows they want to believe the absolute worst about Paul and Nancy Pelosi and so he is giving them what they want. All of this, unfortunately, is par for the course for the former president and the movement that he leads. And that the 2020 election was stolen from him. They want to keep you in the dark, but you are too smart for that, so you see through the stories they are telling you. It’s unclear to me whether Trump actually believes anything he is saying about the Pelosi attack. And that the Iowa caucuses had been stolen from him. As is usual with him, he threw just enough qualifiers and vague language in to give himself plausible deniability. But the window was broken in and it was strange the cops were standing there practically from the moment it all took place.” “It’s weird things going on in that household in the last couple of weeks,” Trump said. To be clear, what follows from the former president is nonsense and officials have gone on the record to denounce conspiracy theories like this. wrote: “The Internet remains undefeated.” “You know, probably, you and I are better off not talking about it.

That case, too, went to the supreme court, which rejected Trump’s argument that he had broad immunity as president. The court rejected that appeal. Trump then attempted to halt the handover in court. After Joe Biden took the Oval Office, the committee renewed the request, seeking Trump’s tax returns and additional information from 2015-2020. The House Ways and Means panel and its Democratic chairperson, Richard Neal of Massachusetts, first requested Trump’s tax returns in 2019 as part of an investigation into the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) audit program and tax law compliance by the former president. Roberts gave the committee until 10 November to respond.

Of course, there would have been no such story there.
