When are the World Cup 2022 quarter-finals? Dates and predictions (Radio Times)

England are through to the final eight, where they will meet reigning world champions France, but not before we see how pre-tournament favourites Brazil fare.

[World Cup stadiums](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sport/football/world-cup-2022-stadiums/) If England can defend against superior opposition like they have done all tournament versus decent attacking units, they stand more than a good chance against a French team yet to keep a clean sheet at this tournament. They cause a great stir, a mass kerfuffle, but they're secretly more concerned about the threat you could cause to them with any manner of tools, as opposed to their own perceived threat. France are the spider in the corner of your mum's living room. That's not to say France won't be confident – they will be, they're reigning champions. Lionel Messi arrived at the World Cup against Australia. Unfortunately, the end of the road is coming into view... They are set up to win games of football, and if that means staying tight, compact and reinforcing against their oppositions' weaknesses, so be it. Assessing each of the World Cup quarter-finalists (The Football Faithful)

Zlatko Dalic overcame Japan on penalties in the last-16, withstanding the vibrancy of the Asian underdogs before holding their nerve in the shootout. Remarkably ...

Les Bleus boast arguably the World Cup’s finest footballer in Kylian Mbappe, who has scored five goals in just three starts and will be crucial to their chances. Harry Kane – who leads the tournament for assists (3) alongside Bruno Fernandes – scored his first goal in the previous round and is now one behind Wayne Rooney’s all-time record. Further forward, Southgate has an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Ronaldo’s reaction could prove pivotal to Portugal’s chances, with the 37-year-old unlikely to be content with a supporting role. It is the first acid test for Gareth Southgate’s side, who have made light work of modest opposition to reach this stage. Ronaldo had been left out of the starting side after irking head coach Santos and saw his replacement, Goncalo Ramos, hit a hat-trick on his first international start. Portugal have emerged as potential contenders following a scintillating showing in the last 16. Such was their compact organisation, Spain were restricted to just six shots and only one on target. Van Gaal has moved away from the traditional 4-3-3 principles of Dutch football and towards a system with three centre-backs, one that is suited to Nathan Ake and Jurrien Timber in the wider roles and allows Denzel Dumfries the freedom to bomb forward. The PSV forward has admirers across Europe and appears to have extended the list of clubs interested in prising him from Eindhoven. The United States were eliminated in the last 16, with Louis van Gaal’s surviving a brief scare with some clinical finishing. An emphatic win over Canada proved vital, as goalless draws with the Moroccans and Belgium ensured progress ahead of the latter.

[Matty Cash](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/234698/Matty-Cash), the Poland right-back, had a decent game against Mbappe and France in the round of 16. [Antoine Griezmann](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/140416/Antoine-Griezmann) in this World Cup and it is fascinating to see. [Vinicius Jr.](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/252107/vinicius-junior), [Casemiro](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/173666/casemiro), [Raphinha](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/231050/raphinha) -- the list goes on. [Kylian Mbappe](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/231388/Kylian-Mbappé) from a defensive point of view, but Kane has always wanted to be judged alongside the very best in the world: playing a defining role in a World Cup quarterfinal against top opposition would be one of the biggest moments in his career. World Cup: CHRIS SUTTON previews the 2022 quarter-finals (Daily Mail)

The quarter-finals will see two heavyweight clashes between England and France and Holland and Argentina while one of the favourites Brazil will take on Croatia ...

Best performance: The 6-1 win over Switzerland. Best performance: The 2-0 win over Poland. He's been directly involved in five goals - scoring two and assisting three - and that's the most by a Portuguese player in a World Cup since Eusebio and Jose Torres in 1966. The 19-year-old midfielder has been England's best player - the driving force in the middle of the park. Best performance: The 3-1 win over the USA. That award would go to the 0-0 draw with the USA. Argentina were one of the World Cup's favourites. But do they have the creativity, the cleverness, the guile that's needed to go all the way? Still popping up with those all-important strikes, like that fine free-kick in a must win against Mexico, and the trademark finish when the heat was on against Australia. There were 20 uninterrupted passes in the build-up to Memphis Depay's goal as the Netherlands countered and were clinical. Best performance: The 4-1 win over South Korea. My one concern: That Canada win aside, Croatia have struggled to score, drawing blanks against Morocco and Belgium.

England vs France, World Cup 2022 quarter-final showdown ... (Sky Sports)

Average positions, shot maps, areas to exploit, attacking thirds for and against; player stats, running speeds and distances, ball carrying and average ages ...

The 'to me, to you', short exchanges between Maguire and Stones is also clearly visualised. France are exceptionally effective at fast breaks with the likes of Mbappe, For this reason, it is likely England will sit deeper than usual on Saturday. Giroud sits two shy on three, level with England duo Buyako Saka and Marcus Rashford - with the latter netting his tally from merely 132 minutes on the field. At just 19-years-old, Bellingham is the only teenager to have clocked minutes, while Real Madrid midfielder Camavinga only turned 20 last month. Who will enjoy the lion's share of possession? So, what would your England starting XI look like to face France? The world champions comfortably beat Poland 3-1, thanks to Olivier Giroud and two goals from Kylian Mbappe. Based on this, England's defensive line typically sits 47.3m up the pitch, which is 3m higher than any other side. However, the debate centres around each side's primary speedster: Walker and Mbappe, respectively. Therefore, Didier Deschamps made nine changes to his starting XI for the final group game but suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Tunisia. England endured regression in successive World Cups after reaching the last eight at the 2006 tournament in Germany. In total, Southgate's side have scored 12 goals and conceded only twice.
