Do not be surprised if this one goes beyond 90 minutes, but there should be a clear winner by the end of 120 minutes. [England and France meet in Al Khor](https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/england-vs-france-live-score-2022-world-cup-updates-scores-bracket-fifa-world-cup-2022-streaming/live/) for their FIFA 2022 World Cup quarterfinal with the winner of this one expected to stand a good chance of going all the way in Qatar. Aurelien Tchouameni and Jules Kounde are both on yellow cards so will miss the semifinal should they pick up another in the event that Les Bleus qualify. Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham should form a trio with Rice in midfield despite suggestions of a three-man defense. Add in the historic Anglo-French rivalry and this has the makings of a World Cup classic. Regardless of the outcome at Al Bayt Stadium, this one is arguably the biggest clash of the tournament so far and pits two of the most talented squads against each other.

It's the pick of the World Cup quarter-finals and the last up on Saturday night.

An extra man at the back would also allow Walker to sweep up behind the defence and reduce the chances of Harry Maguire being exposed in a one-on-one against Mbappe. But doing that would mean sacrificing a midfielder, most likely Jordan Henderson, and forcing Jude Bellingham to play a more disciplined game in a midfield two with Declan Rice. He oozes self-belief and produced a superb performance against the fleet-footed Frenchman in the Champions League last year, but is only just back fit after two months out, following groin surgery.

Raheem Sterling is back with the squad and could a formation change be on the agenda?

Sterling flew back to the UK to deal with the matter but returned to Qatar to train with his team-mates on Friday – although Southgate stressed missing sessions and flying there and back was “not good preparation for a game of this standard”. In the past, that system has seen Southgate criticised for being too negative but it could be the way to see off the world champions on Saturday. That is the same number as they had managed in the previous 48 years – but Southgate has yet to steer England to victory against an established top-drawer nation, and beating the World Cup holders would certainly end that streak.

Within six minutes of the restart, England were 2-0 up, with Rashford and Foden the scorers. However, the idea of changing formations is just another, less apparent form of Southgate doubt from his critics, suggesting that he doesn’t have the tactical acumen to attack France and win. The 23-year-old is playing the best football of his career and has cemented his place as the best player in the world right now. Because of the electrifying speed of the France side, there are questions about whether England will change their formation. His finishing ability, first touch, and pace would frighten any defender, and he has now broken Pelé’s record for the number of goals by a player under 24 at the world cup with 9. Hence, the side that comes out on top will be favourites to reach the World Cup final on 18th December. Al Bayt Stadium is the setting for England’s showdown with France on Saturday.

Now he is one of the more reliable figures in this France side and his hard work off the ball has been crucial to France's press. Marcus Thuram is their only other option should Giroud have an off day and while Kingsley Coman is a regular substitute - he has only been trusted with 15 minutes of action in each World Cup game so far. The depth of the team has suffered as a result. The midfielder has created more goalscoring chances than any other player in the tournament (15), two ahead of his closest competitor Lionel Messi. "He can win the ball back, he's strong, he can head the ball and he can score goals. France were hoping to have the formidable duo of N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba available for this tournament, to add to that experience. Meanwhile, Rabiot has become one of the surprise packages of this tournament so far. There's a reason where there is such a feel-good feeling when both players appear together: France have only lost four out of the 34 matches in which Giroud and Mbappe have played as a duo. Despite some pre-tournament concerns, everything has appeared to perfectly fall into place in the middle of the park for France. The other concern at this World Cup for France is how their goals have been spread among the team. The two main old boys in Deschamps' side lie at separate ends of the pitch. Les Bleus have failed to keep a clean sheet in all four of their World Cup games so far.

England vs France: Walker against Mbappe and other key battles ... (iNews)

England's substitutes could have a big role to play but so will Gareth Southgate – there is more at stake than just Walker vs Mbappe.

And when it comes to potential game-changers on the bench, England have a distinct advantage. With Mbappe around, France’s third-highest-scoring male player in history is no longer required to find the net – he has gone 10 games without a goal – but instead has an unusual hybrid role as a playmaker and midfield disruptor. “There’s no point going into a game like this and just covering up, sitting on the ropes,” said a bullish Southgate. By winning a major tournament, Deschamps has taken France one step further than Southgate has with England, but he too has been condemned for negative tactics and failing to positively influence games with his substitutions. “He is probably the only defender on the planet who would be happy to take him on in a race, one versus one,” added Rio Ferdinand. Griezmann’s role in the French side has unmistakably changed since his Golden Boot-winning days at Euro 2016, but he is absolutely pivotal to Deschamps’ plans.

England vs France predictions: Laura Woods 'believes' in Three ... (talkSPORT.com)

England face their biggest test since Italy visited Wembley, with France standing in their way of a place in the World Cup last four. The reigning worl.

I was at all the England group stage games and watched him closely. He was outstanding and I thought ‘My God, we have a major prospect here.’ He has just shone at the World Cup and is the name on everyone’s lips, evidenced by PSG owner saying everyone would want him, including them. But the Mbappe factor is significant and, while I think England will score, France will shade it. He’s on form and still on for the golden boot. It could be anyone’s in penalties, maybe Jordan Pickford could be the star. But with the type of form England are in, Jude Bellingham has been brilliant from deep, or maybe a Harry Maguire set piece could win it – he’s been great so far. I think the wide areas is where the games will be won and lost and I don’t necessarily mean Kylian Mbappe and Kyle Walker because the other side will be equally important in Ousmane Dembele and Luke Shaw. I’m very much looking forward to the game, but it is so difficult to call. If he has another solid game then we could be in the semi-finals. I’m looking forward to the game. I hope Harry Maguire has a good game and Kyle Walker keeps Kylian Mbappe quiet and I think England could do it – I’ve got the belief! I know everyone will say Jude Bellingham and I’m in total agreement, but Phil Foden has really impressed me.

We've picked out an 11/10 England vs France prediction ahead of Saturday's huge quarter-final showdown.

With that in mind, the disparity in prices looks worth taking advantage of. [Betfred](https://promotions.betfred.com/#/affiliates/sports/football/world-cup-2022/bet-10-get-60?&siteid=104967&referrer=&click=414889388) And the 23/10 about a 90 minute stalemate makes appeal because, for all the brilliant attacking talent at both manager's disposal, both Gareth Southgate and Didier Deschamps are instinctively pragmatic and more likley to adopt a safety-first approach. [England to qualify - 11/10](https://promotions.betfred.com/#/affiliates/sports/football/world-cup-2022/bet-10-get-60?&siteid=104967&referrer=&click=414889388) That really would make space hard to find for England's host of attacking players. The draw, which would mean extra time and possibly penalties, looks a big runner at 23/10 and is probably the value in those outright prices.

England vs France is far more than a football match (Spectator.co.uk)

When England play France tonight, more will be involved than just a game of football. We all know why. Even those with an enviable indifference to history ...

But the French are oddly obsessed with us, and not least with Boris. French is the most elegant of languages, but it is English (or ‘Globish’, as they sneer) that has taken over the world. The French, in contrast, are taught that they are uniquely great, but resent that this is not universally recognised. During the First World War, the huge numbers of British soldiers in northern France spent much of their off-duty hours playing football, and it was this that spread the game into the big French cities. We may be obsessed with our ‘Special Relationship’ with the United States, as the French are with their ‘marriage’ with Germany. After a brief period of relative calm, in 1689 England entered a Europe-wide struggle against the French super-power that lasted more than a century.

Despite their man disadvantage, France continued to probe for a winner and found it with 12 minutes remaining. Les Bleus levelled through Samuel Umtiti after Olivier Giroud’s effort was parried out, before Djibril Sidibé followed in another rebound to give France the lead. Neither side could find a breakthrough after the break with the points shared. Gérard Soler restored parity for France, but Robson’s second of the game – a towering header powered past Jean Luc Ettori – put England back ahead. Zidane curled home a stoppage-time equaliser with a fantastic free-kick past David James, before scoring a second from the spot moments later. Alf Ramsey’s side ensured progress from the group stage as winners with victory over France in their final fixture.

Ahead of the World Cup quarter-final clash, Telegraph Sport takes a deep dive into our readers' ratings of both squads.

Maybe, because it was Lloris, because he had already beaten the goalkeeper to his right, he was in two minds. Giroud challenged Harry Maguire and in a blur the ball was in the net – off the forward’s head, off the defender’s shoulder. But for now, those dreams of 1966 will have to wait, and the hurt goes on. It was Saka who was the key. Eight minutes added time brought more hope and in the final seconds substitute Marcus Rashford took the ball for a free-kick 20 yards out. The game evened out but, gradually, England regained the ascendancy and so it was a shock when Olivier Giroud intervened. It will not be lost on Southgate that Kane joins him in the list of players who have missed monumental England penalties. But it is not time to stop the clocks – even if England have missed that 2022 deadline set at their training base St George’s Park to target this tournament. How was that not picked up by the officials or the Var? England again lined up 4-3-3, with an unchanged team from the 3-0 victory over Senegal and were good to Southgate’s promise of going “toe-to-toe” with France and walked off at half-time feeding on their sense of injustice. This time, more than any other time, and against the world champions France, it felt very different. Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says it's the "game of a lifetime". Gareth Southgate has called it the "biggest test" England could face at this World Cup. "With Bellingham, Henderson and Rice, England believe they have the better of France in that midfield, and that's where this game might be won or lost. "They think there's not a lot of pace there and they think they can exploit that. "I think it's a good move from Gareth Southgate. "He's going toe-to-toe with the world champions.
