England captain Harry Kane missed a second-half penalty as they were dumped out of the World Cup by France.

"He will be stronger for this in the future. "He’s been incredible for us, so reliable in those situations. Kane made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-1 after Bukayo Saka was fouled in the box. We wouldn’t be here but for the number of goals he’s scored for us." "You saw on the first penalty, he was pulling up his socks and he was really taking his time. For that reason, Aluko has questioned whether England should have had a Plan B in place to ease the burden on Kane but there is no other man Southgate would have wanted over the spot-kick.

France would have chances and England would have chances, as mature, developed, elite football teams do at this stage of the competition. “If we had one tomorrow I would feel the same way.” Hard to disagree, and hard to explain how it worked out this way. A moment to seize back the initiative and then back on with the business of trying to win it. There have been those in the past when England have been playing a different game to the World Cup elite, chasing shadows in a sport with which they seem unfamiliar, gulping lungs of panicked breaths, watching Mesut Ozil disappear into the mid-distance. Then the moments come and you have to take them. Kane’s penalty, his first of the two, was to equal Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals for the national team and that is where he is now: at the very top. They faced each other – striker and goalkeeper – at a point in their international careers that mattered. “He’s the best but the best are still 85 per cent [success rate], so even the best are going to miss sometimes. He is the vanguard of the new English generation, the miracle goalscorer. “When you get a second penalty and a goalkeeper who knows you really well, there’s a lot involved in that situation,” he said. Harry Kane versus Hugo Lloris from the penalty spot twice over with a place in the World Cup semi-finals at stake. What happened to the great dispatcher?

[Marcus Rashford](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/marcus-rashford) dipped a free-kick onto the roof of the net with the final kick of the game. But it was England’s left flank that the French were able to unpick in the early stages as Ousmane Dembele and Antioine Griezmann gave [Luke Shaw](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/luke-shaw) a torrid time. [Mason Mount](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/mason-mount) had been barged over. And when Mount was sent tumbling by Theo Hernandez's barge in the back, Mr Sampaio pointed to the spot after a VAR check. This time Kane blazed his spot-kick well over the crossbar with a terrible effort. Griezmann wasn’t closed down wide on the left and his cross found Giroud dashing inside Maguire to score with a meaty header. Bellingham thought he had equalised on the restart but his blistering half-volley forced Lloris into more heroics. Kane was denied by Lloris again when his 25-yard blast brought a flying save from France’s keeper. When Kane outmuscled the big Frenchman again, he was stopped by a crude challenge. France went ahead in the 17th minute through Tchouameni’s thumping finish. It was an agonising moment for Kane - and for the nation. But when the opportunity knocked for Kane to set a new standard and take the quarter-final into extra-time he sent his shot into the horrified England fans packed behind Hugo Lloris’ goal.
