Lopez held his feet and started to throw back, but Warrington landed clean with a left hook and for the last minute it was Warrington with the upper hand as Lopez traded. And in the tenth round, it was Lopez holding on to Warrington as the Mexican showed the first signs of tiring. Then a left hook seemed to badly hurt Lopez, who complained about a clash of heads, but Lopez looked to be struggling now as Warrington threw everything into it. There was a better fifth round for the champion, though, as he roughed Lopez up in close. Warrington landed an early jab, but was forced to cover up as Lopez came after him swinging. On the inside I hurt him to the body and last three rounds the body shots were ripping into him and all he wanted to do was hold.

His return to the Leeds Arena for a 12th time on Saturday drew a huge and vocal home crowd, who were hoping to see their hero triumph having earlier watched England lose to France in the World Cup quarter-finals. In the fifth, Bostan connects with a lovely left uppercut on the inside, Glynos head rocks sidewards and is ready to be taken out here, then a superb single left cross from Bostan, with plenty of snap, floored Glynos for a final time with over two minutes left in the stanza. "I kept working inside and could hear him wincing to the body constantly. Glynos swipes with his left after a break and misses wildly, so Bostan goads him looking to his left to see where the shot ended up. It was a perfect performance from him to win 40-37. "This is boxing, we're going to get hit hard and I hit her with 10 back. Greek Glynos was on the front foot from the off but it only took Bostan a minute or two to be able to work him out, and by the final minute of the opener he had judged the distance just right, dropped his hands low and started landing for fun. I just wanted to show I'm a tidy boxer with a tidy performance. Howard Foster was right to jump in when he did, O'Regan now 9-0 with one knockout. In the second, Bostan continued to look for that backhand uppercut but missed on at least three occasions. The action slowed slightly in this segment but Bostan did land a hard chopping left hook that rock the Grrek's chin. Shergold was cut above her left eye from an accidental clash of heads in the fifth round.

She was hurt again in the final minute of that round, but managed to keep playing her part in the back and forth right through until eight when the referee stopped the action. Bridges, who’s IBF World Bantamweight title was on the line, dropped O’Connell in the third with a hard right hand. After ten months out of the ring, the middleweight shook off the ring rust and squared up to Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams post-fight. They were read out as follows – 114-114, 115-113 in favour of Lopez. The Mexican fighter came out for the first eleventh round of his professional career well aware that, in six minutes, he could be champion. He came out in the ninth, though, like a man who knew he had change the dynamics of the fight and win the last four rounds. At the eighth, Lopez had landed more than double the shots Warrington had. At the halfway stage, things got a bit spicy – the fighters deep in conversation as they traded big shots. The fourth was better for the home fighter in terms of output, but his opponent wasn’t to be deterred – smiling through his gum shield and showing off impressive athleticism with shots coming from all angles. He returned to his corner with a bloody nose. Luis Alberto Lopez was challenging for Warrington’s IBF World Featherweight title, and he didn’t come to stand off or shy away. Lopez came to the UK on a nine fight win streak and has carried himself like a soon-to-be champion.

Warrington loses featherweight world title to Lopez (BBC Sport)

Leeds fighter Josh Warrington is stunned on home soil as Luis Alberto Lopez wins by majority decision to take the IBF featherweight world title.

Maybe unifying is a step too far but I think I can still fight one of the other champions." "This is boxing, we're going to get hit hard and I hit her with 10 back. "It has been a long period of preparation. I'm delighted to be world champion." "He started off like a train and kept coming forward. "I wanted to go to the States and I still want to do that. There was the possibility of an all-British featherweight title fight with WBA 'Regular' champion Leigh Wood or a possible debut in the United States, with Warrington having long been keen to given his fans the chance to watch him fight overseas. It was not a good sign for Warrington after his nose was bloodied in the opening round, and Lopez continued to use his speed to evade his powerful throws. Warrington then unloaded everything he had in the final couple of rounds, hurting Lopez in the 11th and final rounds but ultimately it was not enough. Warrington won that contest despite sustaining a broken jaw during the bout and the Englishman had been out of the ring since to recuperate. This was the first time Warrington had taken to the ring since beating Spain's Kiko Martinez with a Warrington, 32, was hoping to stage a successful defence of the title he reclaimed in March.

JJ Metcalf continued his fine recent run as he beat Courtney Pennington in six rounds of their super-welterweight ten-rounder on the Washington-Lopez bill ...

But there was success for Shergold in the seventh as she reduced the gap and made Dixon exchange punches at close quarters. And there was no let-up from Shergold in the last as she made Dixon work until the final bell. In the sixth round, Pennington looked so tired he was struggling to stay on his feet as he held on and tried to smother Metcalf. After Pennington slowly walked back to his corner at the end of the round, he was followed by referee Howard Foster and the fight was called off. Shergold is 41 and has a career that goes back to 2008, which certainly counts as the previous era of women’s boxing. The Spaniard was not really hurt, but Price continued to dispirit him by keeping him at range. Pennington was urged to show more by his corner, but in the fifth round, he just tried moving away ever more anxiously as Metcalf poured on the pressure. A big left hook and then a solid right hurt Pennington and he looked to be just covering up as his gumshield was knocked out, buying him a break. O’Regan opened up with both hands until referee Howard Foster stepped in at 2:03 of the round. Ruegg did have some success, notably in the last round as she put Courteney under pressure. Ruegg tried to walk Courteney down and, while Courtenay landed the showier punches. “I was devastated after them defeats but things happen for a reason,” Metcalf said.

Josh Warrington stunned as Luis Alberto Lopez wins world title in ... (Leeds Live)

It was a tough night for the Leeds Warrior who struggled with the Mexican's pace and awkward style in a very close, tough fight.

However it was not enough, with Lopez being awarded the win by decision, with one judge having the score as even with the other two giving the fight to the Mexican by two rounds. Lopez continued to push in the early rounds, and will have taken much of them due to his insane work rate. Warrington was quickly aware of Lopez' speed, which was evident early as he used it to get out of range before using his length to land on the Leeds Warrior.
