“I tend to find all the animals I need – the Scottish big five of the red deer, the golden eagle, the white-tailed eagle, the capercaillie, the pine marten – near trees,” Yassin observed. When Deacon visited, he was awaiting the emergence of the young from the nest – but what was remarkable was that he took time away from that passion project to be photographed by her and talk to her children. He offered for them to have a go with his drone, let them look through his huge camera lens and inspired them about the wildlife in Scotland – even allowing them to interview him for a school project. The nest was about the size of a double-bed mattress.” In response, he told us the startling story of the larch he was filming and photographing just behind his home. We were interested in the then-emerging wildlife presenter because of what he might have to say, for our book, For The Love of Trees, about trees as a habitat for other wildlife – in particular, birds.

If you can earn a place in the Final with pure attitude, Molly is right there. Well, this has ALL the drama, and Molly’s dress is spectacular. Motsi thought it was a great comeback, and Shirley thought it was a ‘daddy cool’ dance. Whoever goes, it’s going to be a FABULOUS final next week. Hamza and Jovita are at the top of the leaderboard, and Will and Nancy are at the bottom – with Helen and Fleur on the same score above him. Thank you SO much for joining in on this chilly Sunday – I’ll be back tomorrow night (forgoing my Monday DanceFit class, for the love of Strictly) for the Results.

Yassin also impressed with a lovely waltz, while Helen Skelton smouldered in her Argentine tango. But is Will Mellor heading home?

It was fun pastiche, and it had attitude (ish), but it was basically impossible to compare it to everything that came before, and the judges didn’t bother; there was no technical critique. Revel Horwood thought it lacked flow and the posture was wrong, but he took command. Ballas thought he nailed the arrogance, but he collapsed the frame and the cape work didn’t convince. Ballas said it was one of the best paso dobles she’s seen. Mabuse loved the sharpness and intensity: that was the dance to get her into the final. Mabuse disagreed: it was a great combination of control and show-off. Revel Horwood: “Some people dance the steps; you dance the music, and I love that.” One 10 for 37. Revel Horwood noted a lazy left foot swivel, but loved the details and jive elements. This routine, set to Pencil Full of Lead, was pure joy: high-energy, gleefully zany, and the insane lefts that are now standard for this couple (particularly loved the low-down airplane one). It was also playful, buoyant and a great display of teamwork, if occasionally messy. Craig Revel Horwood noted a loss of balance, but enjoyed the strength. Our famous five celebrities coped pretty well, all things considered, but there was a noticeable drop in quality from the [previous show](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/strictly-come-dancing-2022-musicals-week-helen-skelton-does/) – and the judges, particularly Shirley Ballas, went to war on some of the shoddy semi-final technique.

Strictly Come Dancing 2022, Semi-Final, review: double dancing ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Wildlife presenter Hamza Yassin topped the standings once again. He was courageous enough to wear a kilt for his high-kicking Charleston.

The bill of ballroom fare was bafflingly repetitive. All bucket hats and baggy jeans, it was nostalgic fun but another reminder of the absurdity of the Couple’s Choice category. His waltz wasn’t quite up to his own high standard but Yassin comfortably deserves a place in the final and looks one of two prime candidates to lift the glitterball trophy. The new boy’s neediness to be seen as the nicest judge undermined his credibility. This was an occasion when the standard slipped and the judging went haywire. Last week, we experienced the discombobulation of a Friday night edition of Strictly Come Dancing (BBC One).
