The magic of JK Rowling (CapX)

If Ms Rowling had done nothing else except write the Harry Potter books, that alone would have been an astonishing and unique contribution to the cause of ...

She has used the platform of her success, and the security of her wealth, to make a series of stunningly important and worthwhile contributions to society. And who is out there, leading the way, standing up for science, for decency and for women? (I remember as a child my mother helping the centre; she later told me this was met with a mix of bemusement and disdain from some of her acquaintances.) (That is the basis of the Gender Recognition Reform Bill in Scotland which is likely soon to be enacted.) Ms Rowling has spoken out of the need for biological women to have safe spaces, where there are only other biological women. There are, of course, some people who are so heavily on the good side of the ledger that there really is no need for suspicion. Showing children how much fun books can be, especially in a world with so many competing attractions, and on a scale to which no other books have ever come close, is a mighty achievement.

Isabelle Kerr, chief executive of Beira's Place and a former manager of Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis Centre, said that it was essential to be independent and "free from the pressure of current political agendas". One of the reasons for Ms Rowling and her team creating the new service is the fact that the existing Edinburgh Rape Crisis centre is open to trans women and nonbinary people, including biological males. The new facility has been announced a week before the crunch Holyrood vote on controversial reforms that will make it much easier and quicker for people to legally change gender in Scotland. The centre's chief executive, Mridul Wadhwa, a trans woman, told a podcast that women sexual assault victims who requested female-only care would be "challenged on your prejudices" and told to "reframe your trauma" We continue to see the paths to equality for women and trans people are being deeply interconnected and dependent on shared efforts to dismantle systems of discrimination." The organisation said it had been offering rape crisis services to trans women for 15 years and claimed it has not had a "single incident of anyone abusing this". Rape Crisis Scotland has 17 centres across Scotland and said that it welcomed any services that had "rigourous safeguarding procedures" and was staffed by "highly trained professionals". “The line that I have met in a couple of places is that there is no universal experience of womanhood. [The centre](https://beirasplace.org.uk/) built by Harry Potter’s creator is unique in that it is entirely private and self-funded: Rowling does not want to run the risk of being held to account if she receives public funding, or of being told she has to close it down because of transphobia: transgender women are not allowed in. [In an interview](https://suzannemoore.substack.com/p/an-exclusive-interview-with-jk-rowling) with journalist Suzanne Moore, who was sacked from The Guardian for an article deemed transphobic, Rowling explains that the omnipresence of ‘transgender’ ideology has direct consequences for the reception of real women in pain. But Rowling set up the project with a specific idea in mind: to offer biological women a place where they can feel genuinely safe and protected from the outrages of wokeism, cancel culture, and ‘transgender’ ideology. For Rowling, the existing structures are no longer serving their purpose, as they are contaminated by the ideology of the moment.
