[reported to have cost](https://variety.com/2022/film/box-office/avatar-way-of-water-box-office-opening-weekend-projections-1235459227/) Disney $350 million, according to Variety. Avatar: The Way of Water needs to make $1.49 billion to clinch the top spot for 2022, and it There are a multitude of reasons why it cost so much money and took so much time to make the second Avatar movie. That puts it ahead of early projections for Top Gun: Maverick, which currently ranks as the most successful movie this year. Reviews aside, it remains to be seen how the movie will perform and if it will reach the heights of its predecessor. “For the sequels, Cameron wanted to use the same motion capture tech for actors while they were submerged underwater, an unheard-of feat that required years to engineer a solution.” Cameron also decided to film the second and third movies together, which took three years to complete. This, on top of the time it took for post-production, all adds up to the 13-year wait. But if its current rating of 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes is any indication, a majority ultimately did enjoy the sequel for the visual spectacle that it is. Domestic box office projections are strong and reviews sway positive in general, but the coming days will offer a better sense of whether it’s on track to meet its lofty ambitions.
After 13 years, the sequel to James Cameron's epic has finally arrived in cinemas.
Spider also drags Quaritch to the surface, but although he has saved him he refuses to stick with him and abandons his father in favour of returning to the Sullys. There is certainly a lot more to explore regarding the mysteries of Kiri, while Quaritch remains at large and seems unlikely to give up on his antagonistic tendencies towards the Na'vi any time soon. Lo'ak goes to warn Payakan of the impending threat and his siblings follow him, after which they have an argument and end up coming under attack from Quaritch and his men. Anyway, Quaritch has been continuing his attempts to hunt down Jake and has teamed up with a captain called Mick Scoresby who is hunting the tulkun so he can extract a very valuable substance that apparently stops humans from ageing. The film begins with the news that the sky people, made up of recombinant Quaritch and his army, are back on Pandora with a dual mission. Amongst the ensuing havoc, Tuk is carried away by a current on the now flooding ship, and Neytiri and Kiri pursue her. Instead, she plays a Na'vi teenager called Kiri – who it is revealed very early on in the film is the biological daughter of Grace's avatar. Although this is put down to epilepsy by medical experts, it seems to be something a little more significant. [subscribe now](http://radiotimes.com/magazine-subscription?utm_term=evergreen-article). But once again, this does not mean that James Cameron has decided to retcon previous events. On the one hand, they want to make the moon a new home for humans – what with Earth dying and all – but in order to do so they first need to track down and kill the leader of the Na'vi insurgency, Jake Sully. Weaver actually does also make a few appearances as Grace in the film – in both a couple of flashback scenes and in one sequence in which Kiri visits a Spirit Tree which allows her to communicate with her ancestors.

He’s the most nondescript of the three, with turquoise skin and short, curly hair. A lot of The Way of Water focuses on the younger generation beyond the Sully kiddos. He’s cocky and definitely plays the role of the bully. The last notable reef clan kid isn’t explicitly related to Reya and Aonung, though he does hang out with them a lot. She’s a bit of a dreamer, which causes some of the reef clan teens to make fun of her. Kiri is the only one of the Sully siblings who does not keep her hair in braids. Most of Lo’ak’s arc revolves around how he feels like an outsider in his own family, which is exacerbated by how much he feels like an outsider around the reef-dwelling Na’vi his family visits. He’s had a smattering of small roles in movies and TV, including a very tiny role as “Kid on Bike” in Avengers: Endgame. The two of them have a whole brood of kids, plus a human tagalong. It’s all fun and family bonding until about halfway through the movie, when you realize the names of all the kids blurred by at the beginning of the movie, and it’s hard to tell who’s who after that. Avatar: The Way of the Water is the first of four planned James Cameron sci-fi sequels - this is how the film's ending sets up Avatar 3.
As Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their children have joined the Metkayina water tribe, they will have strong allies going into the impending conflict. And, as Quaritch is still alive, he is likely to feature heavily in the second sequel too. "Avatar: The Way of Water" lives up to box office expectations, already closing in on $100 million worldwide as it heads into opening weekend.
We can look back at The Terminator, at Aliens, at Titanic, at Avatar, and now at Avatar: The Way of Water and see the same mistaken assessments and the same eagerness to see Cameron and his films collapse amid a pile of hubris and humiliation, and every time the films rose to the occasion and exceeded expectations. And this all raises a big important point: all of the years of talk about Avatar lacking social footprint, lacking staying power, lacking public awareness or interest, and not having much to justify its existence on merit are washed away as easily as sand on a beach. The core audience who will revisit the film over and over in theaters are now gearing up to arrive. Avatar: The Way of Water is still on course for a $180-200 million domestic opening, and a massive $500-600 million global bow. In an interesting side note, even the World Cup and the arrival of Avatar 2 didn’t suppress Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s ability to hold well as it heads into the weekend. James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to 2009’s chart-topping Avatar has arrived, and early numbers point to another major box office result and widespread acclaim for Avatar: The Way of Water.
Avatar: The Way of Water introduces Sigourney Weaver's new Na'vi character Kiri, but leaves a major question about her unsolved by the end.
Could it be that Eywa is actually behind the birth of Kiri, using her as a way of keeping Grace alive? However, the Metkayina clan believe it's down to something more spiritual and is a result of Kiri's connection to Eywa. What is clear is that Kiri does have a strong connection to Eywa, saying that she can hear and feel her. It's unclear if Grace's avatar was pregnant with Kiri at the time of the failed procedure and we actually don't even know who Kiri's father is. Before her death, she did tell Jake she saw Eywa who is the guiding force of life on Pandora with the Na'vi believing that Eywa keeps the ecosystem in perfect balance. She's the biological daughter of the avatar Dr Grace Augustine, Sigourney Weaver's character in the first movie.

I tweaked the new version that Austin Kleon came up with that replaced the fourth image of the man sitting up with a smile in his face (#4) with the man sitting back in his chair expressionless (#3). But then I would have had to watch it again to pen this review, and that would be . Ultimately, Avatar: The Way Of Water is just not all that good or cerebral or exciting. I would have loved it if this were an adventure movie, with Jake and his family heading out into the wide, wild world and facing struggles that had nothing to do with the human colonizers. But the bad guys are coming with their guns and their bombs and their bombs and their guns. But even if that is how kids in the US talk in 2022—it isn’t, not to this degree—it makes no sense on an alien planet. And the Navi—a crude analog for the indigenous people of our own world—remain the Noble Savage trope they were in the last film, only less interesting now. It’s a retread of the first film. I didn’t see Avatar: The Way Of Water on an IMAX 3D screen because the nearest IMAX to where I live is at the Grand Canyon and they don’t show this kind of movie on that screen (even if they did it’s being renovated until next Spring). It’s arrogant and self-indulgent and I think the novelty that made that okay in the first film has worn off for audiences, or at least it has for me. Some of the fights—while too long—were exciting and action-packed and had cool special effects. - That’s the best way I can describe Way Of Water.
Avatar: The Way of Water ending explained - We'll be heading back to Pandora in Avatar 3 and here's how Avatar 2's ending sets up the third movie.
Jake and Neytiri manage to rescue Lo'ak, but Kiri and Tuk are still on board the ship that is now sinking as a result of the battle. Quite what Spider thinks about Neytiri threatening his life remains to be seen, and could play out in the third movie. However, Cameron leaves other mysteries unsolved that could prove critical, such as who Kiri's father is and what her mysterious connection to Eywa is. "We are sea people now, this is our home," Jake says in the closing voiceover. Jake invokes "Uturu", a Na'vi tradition that grants any refugee seeking sanctuary safe harbour, and they start to learn the customs and traditions of the water clan. It works, barely, but Jake knows that Quaritch will stop at nothing to hunt him down, so a brutal battle ensues. Now, the Metkayina are mad and despite Jake telling them that it's a trap, they gear up for war. This is our fortress, this is where we make our stand." Before that can happen, outcast tulkun Payakan – who had formed a close bond with Lo'ak – attacks the RDA's ship in revenge for the RDA killing its mother. However, Spider (Jack Champion) – a human child left on Pandora who hung out with the Sully family – is taken by Quaritch, who it's revealed is his father. Avatar 2 is perfectly enjoyable without the context of the first film, and there are clearly, as you can see above, some questions you might have that even the first film doesn’t answer. In The Way of Water, she oversees RDA activity on Pandora, activity she blames Sully for hindering; it’s she who calls for his execution. In the comic, Socorro dies during battle and, after the Na’vi defeat the humans, Miles is too small to return to earth in a cryopod, so he is left behind and raised alongside the few human stragglers and the Na’vi on Pandora. Edie Falco, who plays General Frances Ardmore, was not in the first film, but was introduced in the comics. Miles “Spider” Socorro (Jack Champion) is a retconned character who was first seen in the comic Though he wasn’t in the first film, the comic explains that Spider was born on the RDA colony base to Quaritch and Paz Socorro, an RDA pilot who never appears in Avatar 1. And if she died, how did the circumstances allow her to give birth to her 14-year-old daughter, Kiri (also played by Sigourney Weaver), in Avatar 2? In the first movie, Jake Sully was a paraplegic former Marine who agreed to join the Avatar Program, part of the Resources Development Administration (RDA), an incredibly powerful non-governmental human organization that wanted to mine Pandora for “unobtanium”—an energy-conducting mineral that had become highly valuable, given the depletion of Earth’s natural resources. Though avatars are remotely controlled by humans, it is possible—with the help of the Na’vi who can channel their deity, Eywa, through the Tree of Souls—for a human to transfer their consciousness permanently into an avatar body. James Cameron makes the grand finale of Avatar: The Way of Water into a visually dazzling victory lap full of easter eggs and homages…
When the rest of the Sullys go down with the ship, with the parents resigning themselves to a watery grave just as Ed Harris did in The Abyss, an almost otherworldly force of nature is summoned and a glowing sentience is manifested by Kiri. For in both True Lies and Avatar 2, it all comes down to the baddie kidnapping the hero’s little girl. The one to embody this in Avatar: The Way of Water is unsurprisingly Neytiri. However, what they find at the bottom of the ocean is something altogether more powerful: a sentient godlike race of aliens that the film’s scientists call NTIs (non-terrestrial intelligence). As bitter as it is losing Neteyam, it’s a bit of a gift for Saldaña who was mostly relegated to the background of Avatar 2 as the next generation of Na’vi took centerstage. The reason Jake and Neytiri, and for that matter the remainder of their biological children, are alive at the very end though is more of a nod to another movie: The Abyss (1989). Of course the most obvious easter egg in the Avatar 2 finale is how so much of it resembles Titanic. Before Jake and Neytiri learn of Kiri’s kidnapping, they have already entered the deepest shadow of grief; they have suffered the death of a child. Quaritch (Stephen Lang) has slaughtered the gentle whale-like creatures of Pandora’s deep seas in order to bring the coastal Na’vi out for a fight—and to lure Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) to his death. Because don’t be fooled, the ending of Avatar: The Way of Water is a visceral callback to nearly every other movie Cameron ever made. Perhaps more importantly to the industry, too, they were all magnificent hits with Titanic and Avatar each spending a minimum of nine consecutive years at the top of the “Highest Grossing Movies of All Time” list.
