It's been 35 days since a fixture took place at Ashton Gate with the visit of a familiar Championship adversary in Stoke City ending that wait.
City are very strong in reserve as well with Antoine Semenyo, Chris Martin and Sam Bell all on the bench. The middle of the park, by contrast, pretty much selects itself with Matty James, Joe Williams and Alex Scott starting. Historically, the Austrian has tended to play when he’s had a slight doubt hanging over his status, he is a very durable player. Naismith looks set on the left, with Rob Atkinson having to wait for his chance again, so it’ll be either in the middle or on the right. The back three selection could well be a continuation from Rotherham with George Tanner, Andy King and Kal Naismith all having good games and deserve to keep their places. Stoke are traditionally a big, physical set-piece focused team, but their forward players against Cardiff - Liam Delap, Will Smallbone, Tariq Fosu-Henry, Tyrese Campbell - don’t quite subscribe to such a theory, so aren’t in danger of exploiting that particular potential weakness. We’ll quickly switch to the left-hand side where Cam Pring is likely to remain despite Dasilva’s availability again. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves or provide any kind of commentators' curse on the 26-year-old but That aspect could also come into Pearson’s thinking but, again, Weimann’s status is key. Vyner is fit again and Pearson must be tempted to bring the 24-year-old back into the line-up. [Pearson dialled that back 24 hours later](https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/nigel-pearson-bristol-city-weimann-7935040) and the decision was going to be made on Friday with the cold weather not exactly helping the ease at which players could train and be assessed, even with the stellar work of the groundstaff at the High Performance Centre to get it in good shape. Just as a slight side-point the concept of Tanner and Pring as wing-backs is a little on the defensive side potentially, in a game where City could see a fair bit of the ball (Stoke average 46.8 per cent possession on the road).

Jacob Brown scored a second-half winner as Stoke came from behind to secure a 2-1 Sky Bet Championship victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
A scrappy start to the second half saw Bristol midfielder Joe Williams head wide of the near post from a Weimann cross. Weimann almost broke the deadlock from a clever Wells chip into the box after 31 minutes but his volley came back off a post. Zak Vyner was off target from 25 yards and Wells had a shot from a narrow angle blocked by Bonham as the home side stepped up the pressure.

Full of endeavour and running down the channels but without getting in a position to threaten the Stoke goal. Was at the forefront of every attack in the first half and was in a poacher's spot to turn in Cam Pring's across minutes after almost assisting Weimann. Arguably the best player on the pitch in the first half but couldn't assert his authority in the second. A lot quieter in the second half with City struggling to get the ball out to the wide positions. Showed his pace and strength to beat Brown and get the byline before smashing a ball across the goal. May think he could have done better to stop the first but was given no chance with the second.

The win will give him a lift and hopefully he will be okay by the time we are back in on Tuesday. "Our record when falling behind hasn't been good, so it was important to show the character and resilience that we did here. The second half in general was pretty scrappy and in the end we've lost because of our own mistakes." All credit to Stoke for the way they matched us. Bristol City's Nigel Pearson: "The way the game went was indicative of our season. But then we concede a bad goal through poor decision-making and go in level instead of in front.
