Muirhead, a regular at Perth's Dewars Centre, fulfilled a lifelong dream by winning gold at the Winter Olympics in February.

England football star Mead took home the top award. Muirhead was nominated for the Sports Personality of the Year alongside Jessica Gadirova, Beth Mead, Ben Stokes, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Jake Wightman. Perthshire curler Eve Muirhead placed third at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Wednesday night.

Perthshire curler Eve Muirhead has been named third in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

She made the difficult decision to step away a sport she had taken up from the age of 9 after following in the footsteps of her dad Gordon – a 1992 Olympian. After being awarded the Freedom of Perth, Muirhead received an MBE and OBE at Windsor Castle in June. The pinnacle of Eve’s career came in February this year as she masterminded Team GB to gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. That success came at the fourth time of asking for Muirhead who has had an incredible career in curling. The Perthshire-born curler won gold for the UK at the Winter Olympics and finished in the top three at the annual gala awards ceremony.

"Before we knew it we were standing on the podium. The [Perthshire](https://www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/all-about/perthshire)-born star finished third in the public vote for the top prize, capping a fantastic 12 months for the 32-year-old. "To stand on that podium and win that Olympic gold medal finally was definitely a dream come true. Muirhead finished ahead of seven-time snooker world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, gymnast Jessica Gadirova, who won the floor world title, and 1,500m athletics world champion Jake Wightman in the public vote. In August, Muirhead announced she was hanging up her broom after a glittering career which also included a World Championship win and three European titles. I worked my way through Vancouver when I was just out of school and eventually managed to get on top of the podium in Beijing.
