Chef reveals simple tricks to avoid soggy, mushy roast potatoes (Metro)

Looking to ensure your roast potatoes are crispy, not soft and soggy? Try these chef tips for perfect results every time.

Not only can you check whether they are ready but you get first dibs on the crispiest roasties!’ ‘Though we all love a crispy roast potato, it can be really easy to mess them up,’ said Jeff. He recommends par-boiling your spuds then fluffing them up before roasting for best results. Next up, there’s the oil. ‘If you drown them in too much oil, they’ll burn on the outside and be undercooked on the inside.’ Thankfully, though, if you’re worried about striking the balance between soft in the middle and crispy on the outside, there are just a few things to remember.

We tried roast potatoes from Aldi, Tesco and M&S (North Wales Live)

It may not be the most exciting food you'll eat over the festive period, but Christmas dinners can be made and broken by the humble roast potato.

Whilst they didn't look the best, they had everything you'd want from a roastie. The only downside was that the size of potato varied which could lead to uneven cooking, but if you're able to look past that they're a tasty and affordable option. The size of the potatoes were among the smallest of the bunch, but they had a fluffy, buttery texture which would compliment any Christmas dinner. Lidl's version was also one of the most affordable options we tried, priced at 99p. Score: 8/10 Score: 7/10 I had high expectations for M&S' Maris Piper potatoes basted in beef dripping, but sadly they fell short when it came to flavour. With a lacklustre texture and average flavour, it's difficult to justify the £2.39 price. Score: 6/10 Take a look at which came out on top just in time for Christmas. Score: 5/10 Many will opt for home-made roasties but, for those with a time limit or tight budget, supermarkets' pre-made versions are the way forward.

How to get perfect crispy roast potatoes on Christmas day and the ... (Irish Mirror)

Roast potatoes are arguably one of the best parts of Christmas dinner but so many of us end up with mush in the oven tray and no crisp.

"Make a prep list of roughly how you'd like to plan the day and do everything you can in advance. This will make the day easy and free up some oven space if needed, just don't try to cram a turkey in there!" The chef continued: "Preheat your chosen fat in a hot oven - duck fat is my choice! Marc says that there's one thing you should do in order to achieve optimum crispiness and taste. Then, strain them and wait until the steam stops. If you're preparing the spuds from scratch this year, you may be wondering how to get the texture just right.

How to cook the perfect Christmas turkey - plus expert tips for gravy ... (RSVP Live)

The ham, stuffing, roast potatoes and gravy are all very important but the turkey is the star of the show and the one part of Christmas dinner you don't ...

Cover the turkey with the muslin and roast in the oven for 2 3/4 - 3 1/4 hours. - The turkey browns beautifully, but if you like it even browner, remove the muslin 10 minutes before the end of the cooking time. To make the gravy, spoon the surplus fat from the roasting pan. If the turkey is not covered with butter-soaked muslin then it is a good idea to cover the whole dish with a large sheet of parchment. Melt the butter for basting the turkey and soak a large piece of muslin in the melted butter. If necessary, wash and dry the cavity of the bird, then season and three-quarters fill with cold stuffing. - Remove the wishbone from the neck end of the turkey, for ease of carving later. Weigh the turkey and calculate the cooking time. Using a tall, narrow saucepan, make a turkey stock by covering the neck, gizzard, heart, wishbone, wing tips, vegetables, bouquet garni and peppercorns with cold water. - Remove the turkey to a carving dish, keep it warm and allow it to rest while you make the gravy. - Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. - To make the stuffing, sweat the onions gently in the butter until soft, for 10 minutes approx., on a low heat, then stir in the crumbs, herbs and a little salt and pepper to taste.

Top chef reveals roast potato mistake everyone makes to stop them ... (Nottinghamshire Live)

When people are asked what their favourite part of a Christmas dinner is, many would instantly say roast potatoes, but they have to be done just right.

"Make a prep list of roughly how you'd like to plan the day and do everything you can in advance. "Roast potatoes are done in the morning and heated back through," he said. Most of the things I make the day before and just heat back through. Once you've done this step, there are a few other things you should do in order to make your roast potatoes taste the absolute best for your guests. Waiting for them to cool completely after parboiling is essential, which many people fail to do and this is why the coating often isn't as crisp as it should be. There is not much that can top a perfect roastie, when they are fluffy on the inside with a delicious crispy and flavoursome coating.
