Everything you need to know about the Boots Boxing Day 2022 sale (Manchester Evening News)

Our ex-Boots employee has spilled all the tips and tricks for shopping the Boots Boxing Day sales.

Boots have not - and are unlikely to - reveal when the 70 per cent off sale will launch, but we can expect it to be at the end of January based on previous years. Simply take the item and your receipt and you’ll be offered a refund or replacement. In 2022, the sale launched in March. Shoppers will often find Christmas gifts heavily reduced as a result of damaged boxes or a product missing - but you can usually salvage a lot of the contents to create hampers or use as stocking fillers, too. This is a very low-key sale in-store only, and usually runs around the fourth weekend in January. If you have any physical coupons, too, bring them along and the checkout assistants will be happy to help you work out which ones to use. A lot of stores will use an end aisle or a small section of the store for clearance products which are often discontinued, partially damaged or nearing their expiry date. These will automatically give you the best deals and most points when you scan them at the till. First of all, you should visit your local stores around an hour before closing on Christmas Eve to give you an idea of what will be in stock and reduced on Boxing Day. Remember, it’s not a bargain if you weren’t planning on buying it in the first place. Make sure you’ve downloaded the Boots app and loaded all of your offers to your card. Be sure to check with your local store before you head out.

The expected fall in Boxing Day trade compared with last year continues a long decline in popularity of the annual shopping tradition, as the rise of the US-inspired November discount day Many are carrying on a tradition started in the pandemic, and in some cases even earlier, of rewarding hard-working staff with a day of rest after the busy festive shopping season. Mumming: The Boxing Day hunt, but not as you know it (BBC News)

The ancient Christmas-time tradition of mumming is marked with dead birds, drama and drinking.

"A lot of our work is in schools and the faces of children when they see the masks and costumes is very special, often there is a spark of fear which quickly turns to delight," programme manager Clare Jennings said. "They all have died away, tradition has fallen a good bit and that's where the good work of the Armagh Rhymers gives it a profile." "If there was enough sandwiches made by the women, and enough drink, it would carry on to a second night. "They gather the money and then they have a dance. "It's a midwinter fertility rite, marked by the death of the hero and the revival, in the depths of midwinter there is hope, the sun will come back in the spring," explained Jim Ledwith from the Mummers Foundation in County Fermanagh. "The wrenboys are a different sort of tradition, they only go out on St Stephen's Day to perform song and music, these are one-day wonders," Jim explained.

Boxing Day sales: Brits expected to spend hundreds of millions less (Metro)

The cost of living crisis and transport strikes are expected to contribute to a poor sales period for the high street.

Some businesses are still expected to fare well, particularly the personal technology sector, the most sought-after type of product at this type of year. According to the Centre for Retail Research estimates, the cost of the rail and postal strikes to businesses could hit £1.5bn for the pre-Christmas period and up to £1bn for the January sales. The day after Christmas is traditionally one of the busiest of the year for high streets but Brits are expected to rein in spending in 2022.
