Call the Midwife Special review – it wouldn't be Christmas without ... (The Guardian)

The rousing, touching postwar childbirth drama has reached 1967 and is now so familiar it feels as if it's been on air ever since. Prepare to be moved.

As always, it juggles a handful of storylines of varying degrees of seriousness, focusing on a main pregnant woman, a b-side pregnant woman, what the nuns are up to, what the nun-midwives are up to, what the midwives who are not nuns are up to, and what Fred in the shop is up to. Not only are they debating what level of compensation to accept – the richer families want to hold out for more, while her father, Bernie, struggling with a lack of work at the docks, wants whatever help they can get, and now – but Susan is struggling at school, within an education system that rejects her at every turn. Poplartunity Knocks opens up the stage for everyone, and there’s a scene with tiny snowmen that is particularly touching. Much of Cindy’s storyline is about bureaucracy and paperwork, and what it’s like to have to prove you exist when you have grown up outside the system. It barely bothers trying to bring in any more newcomers, assuming that if you’re watching, you’ll know exactly what Trixie has been up to in Portofino, and why it’s nice to see Rhoda Mullucks and the Mullucks family back in the care of Dr Turner. And whether you like it or not, you will get some mildly traumatic childbirth nestled inside a sneakily socialist message about the importance of social care and well-run, well-funded public institutions.

The bright and ballsy Rhoda Mullucks (Liz White) returns to the care of Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) and nurse Shelagh (Laura Main) as an expectant mother ...

Alongside Shelagh's children she is dressed up as a rosy-cheeked snowman as they belt out Frosty the Snowman to a chuffed audience. Season 12 of Call the Midwife will air on BBC One on New Year's Day. He shares how he drinks to hide from the pain of the future other people tell him Susan will have. Her fall lands her a trip to the hospital where she receives stitches to the head. New squidgy babies are born, Trixie gets engaged, even the Mulluckses get into the festive swing of things. Though not explored in massive depth, a family row exposes how overlooked Perry and Belinda feel and how desperate they are for their mother's attention. It is recovering alcoholic Trixie (Helen George) who is able to reach him and convince him to attend an AA meeting. This is the first time we are seeing her own personal, lived experience. This is hinted at again later but this time from Susan's perspective as she watches other children playing in the snow. [Call the Midwife ](https://www.digitalspy.com/call-the-midwife/)fashion it is a tear-jerker of an episode. How they presume she will feel, how they expect it to affect her. In the space of those cracks anxiety fills.

Call the Midwife Christmas Special, review: an irresistible Yuletide ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

From Trixie's love life to Fred's talent show, Call the Midwife was in wish-fulfilment mode - and why not on Christmas Day?

Cue a kiss, fireworks and a chorus of Auld Lang Syne. The adorable Susan (Emily Webb) was now an angelic four-year-old but struggling to play with able-bodied children. [Helen George](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/call-midwifes-helen-george-traumatic-birth-story-maternal-guilt/)). Probably too clever a pun for the hapless handyman to come up with but let’s not quibble, it’s Christmas. Besides, he’d donned a sparkly suit and built a plywood Clap-o-meter. It was December 1967 in the East End.

Call the Midwife, BBC One, review: This wonderful Christmas ... (iNews)

Heidi Thomas's drama has accompanied us for a decade of Christmases because it is about kindness and looking after each other. Call The Midwife s12 ...

Call the Midwife is a utopia where warm-hearted women call the shots and tolerance and community always save the day. (“I was born in Bradford!”) Susan’s story, meanwhile, reminded us of the continued battle for representation disabled people face. Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) was looking mutinous at having been roped in to help, so it was probably for the best that their evening practice was interrupted when they heard screams from the street outside. But it was Georgie Glen’s earnest Miss Higgins who most entertained, as she prepared for her recorder performance at the talent show: “an entertainment around the history of the woodwind instrument,” which was secretly dreaded by everyone else. Rhoda was pregnant again, and struggling to contain her anger about society’s treatment of her daughter, who had been left out of the nativity play. So it seems fitting that its eleventh special gave us a mashup between the nuns of Nonnatus House and the actual nativity tale.

What is thalidomide as seen in Call the Midwife's Christmas 2022 ... (Radio Times)

Thalidomide and thalidomide poisoning plays a big part in the BBC's Call the Midwife Christmas 2022 special – here is a history of the notorious drug.

Call the Midwife is available to stream on "They’ve become members of the family almost because you do have a closeness once you learn more and get to meet new people. We still feel that because with the theme of thalidomide there is still more of the story to be unfolded." [subscribe now](http://radiotimes.com/magazine-subscription?utm_term=evergreen-article). People are still fighting for justice, so it's important that we still see the struggles that Susan is going through and all the complex emotions that Liz feels about being pregnant again. So well written and so well performed. The infants that did survive had limb, eye, heart and urinary tract problems. The oral medication was promoted for easing anxiety, sleeping troubles, morning sickness and tension. And Chris Reilly I thought was sensational as well. But what is the drug exactly? This time round, she's heavily pregnant and nervous about her unborn child as her first daughter, who was born in season 5, lives with limbs that have been affected by thalidomide. As well as the midwives moving into a brand new maternity clinic, Trixie (Helen George) has made an anticipated return from Portofino.

Rhoda is also upset with her husband, Bernie: his adoration of Susan and anger at the world’s treatment of her has led him to frequent the pub and the bottle. Nurse Lucille (Leonie Elliott), Nurse Trixie (Helen George), and Nurse Nancy (Megan Cusack) in Call The Midwife Season 12.

Trixie is a generous and caring woman, but nothing is coming between her and quality jewelry, so she high-tails it to the shore and finds the ring just shy of the water’s edge. It’s been a hallmark of Call the Midwife from the beginning, and in a few short months, the series will be back for its Season 12 PBS debut. It doesn’t take long for Cindy to realize she is on her own with a baby on the way – her boyfriend has done a runner, and she has no other family. As for highlights of the talent show: Susan Mullucks joins the Turner family in singing “Frosty the Snowman”; Matthew and Nancy perform a surprise duet of the Frank Sinatra song, “Something Stupid;” and the stricken look on Phyllis Crane’s face as she sits on stage during Millicent Higgins painful woodwind recital. She learns that the Yorkshire lass was moved from place to place after her mother was committed to a mental hospital. She finds lodging in a dodgy boarding house and attempts to apply for benefits but doesn’t possess the needed documentation. Let’s turn now to the accelerating romance of Nurse Franklin and Matthew Alyward. The overworked young nun will also return to the Mother House to heal and recharge her spiritual batteries. Unfortunately, over the years, he has turned to alcohol to deal with the stress and guilt of raising a child with severe physical disabilities. When he shows up inebriated at the maternity hospital while Rhoda is laboring, Trixie takes him aside and assures him she understands his struggles. One night he gets so drunk he loses track of Susan’s Christmas present, a lovely Tudor dollhouse, which he later finds destroyed in the back of a rubbish truck.
