Boro to repeat Nottingham Forest glory? Five end-of-season ... (Football365.com)

Michael Carrick to mastermind a play-off final win for Middlesbrough, Norwich to slip out of the top six and Nigel Pearson to exit Bristol City?

The club have stagnated under Pearson and they now look to be on their way backwards. But frankly, nothing that happens in the Championship nowadays would surprise me. But they have followed that up with defeats against Stoke City and West Brom, then a draw at Millwall. So a dire run of form would leave them looking over their shoulders. Instead, a more intense battle will break out with half of the division seemingly vying for the four play-off spots. The inevitable new manager bounce is primed to make me look daft here – A frankly daft league is living up to expectations this season. Burnley and Sheffield United have been in a league of their own this season. Six wins in nine have lifted them away from relegation trouble. They are already up to sixth in the Championship and they appear primed to make one of the play-off spots their own. Boro were managed by Chris Wilder at the time and they were active in the summer to build one of the best squads in the Championship. [links to Bournemouth](https://www.football365.com/news/opinion-middlesbrough-might-be-content-to-let-wilder-to-fall-in-an-upward-direction) and a sustained run in the relegation places led to his dismissal.

“I began my career at this level of the game with Doncaster and feel that I have now come full circle, and I can’t wait to see what the Championship brings this season as there isn’t one standout team and it will be a tough league.” “Things have been a bit different for me this season as it is the first team that I have ever gone into a pre-season without a deal at a club. “I want to come here to Keighley and help these lads compete within the Championship and with the squad we have got, we will definitely be pushing at the right end of the table.

The world number six warmed up for the main event of the year by finishing runner-up to Michael van Gerwen in last month’s Players Championship Finals, having also reached three European Tour finals this season and picked up a brace of Players Championship titles. Cross famously lifted the Sid Waddell Trophy at the first attempt with victory over departing legend Phil Taylor in the final and has gone on to win the World Matchplay and two European Championship titles. Van Gerwen, World Champion in 2014, 2017 and 2019, has been the dominant force on the circuit this year, storming to Premier League, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and Players Championship Finals glory to take his tally of PDC major titles to 45. The Hurricane has partnered Van den Bergh in the last five World Cups, with the pair twice reaching the Semi-Finals, and will look to reaffirm his stance as the grand master of Belgian darts by defeating his young compatriot on the sport’s biggest stage. The world number 15 has picked up two World Series titles this year, while also reaching the Semi-Finals of the World Matchplay and finishing runner-up in two European Tour events. The Quarter-Final line-up will be confirmed at the World Darts Championship on Friday following the final day of action in 2022.
