George Santos, elected to Congress in November, has admitted to lies about work and education experience.
CBS reported that they are looking into his finances and financial disclosures. "My sins here are embellishing my resume," Mr Santos told the Post. Mr Santos said he was "not a criminal" and said that the scandal would not prevent him from serving his two-year term in the House of Representatives.

The scandal has evolved quickly in the past week, and any more damaging revelations, depending on how serious they are, could trigger a new wave of condemnations that proves too much for an incoming congressman with few to no allies in Washington to bear. But in the end, this may just be another falsehood spun by an aspiring politician who wound up being more fiction than fact. If he takes his seat in the lower chamber, the New York congressman-elect could very well ride out this storm — at least until voters take another shot at him in 2024. He’s not Jewish at all, in fact — Mr Santos is now [seriously using the “I didn’t say I was Jewish, I said I was Jew-ish” explanation](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/embattled-republican-santos-faces-new-heat-over-jew-ish-heritage-claim-2022-12-27/) first pioneered as a joke, despite claiming in both a public position paper as well as comments publicly and privately to be a “Latino Jew”. “The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated with Congressman-Elect Santos are nothing short of stunning. Adding to the confusing and eyebrow-raising nature of his wealth is the fact that the company he founded and rode to success actually shut down this year after failing to file annual paperwork with Florida state authorities. Others have been more specific in their condemnations, including members like Ritchie Torres and Joaquin Castro, and called for his ouster from the House. The answer to that question could very well hinge on whether Mr Santos can make it to 3 January, when the new House class will take office. [ should be investigated by the House Ethics Committee. Mr Santos and a handful of allies remain adamant that he can serve his district for two years in the House, and that he will weather this storm. Nor is he a former employee of Citigroup or Goldman Sachs, two companies which denied his past claims to have worked for them. GOP House leadership, meanwhile, has remained completely silent.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST: If a politician lies, does it amount to a crime? George Santos, a newly elected lawmaker from Long Island, faces that question.
That's his phrase - sort of, I guess, a claim to be sort of Jewish. MANN: Yeah, this piece is sparking a lot of outrage. MANN: Well, the Office of Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly - this is a Republican - she released a statement describing Santos' lies as nothing short of stunning. INSKEEP: So lying about the money would be the crime. RICHARD BRIFFAULT: So it would be serious if instead - if this was not truly a loan, but this was somehow disguised campaign contributions from other people. But his financial history now faces close scrutiny, and Democrats are calling on the Federal Election Commission to also investigate. INSKEEP: A Republican prosecutor in New York has now opened a probe of Santos' deceptions. And the question now is whether Santos did anything criminal. He admits he did not work where he claimed or study where he claimed or have the faith that he claimed. He claimed four of his employees died in the Pulse nightclub shooting in Miami - not true; claimed to own valuable real estate - that's not true. And he claimed to be a proud Jewish American but now acknowledges being Catholic, though he still says he has some Jewish ancestors. I'm not a fake.

MANN: The Santos scandal has tarnished what was a bright spot for Republicans in the midterm elections. The GOP stumbled nationally last month but managed to build a razor-thin House majority, in part because of victories here in New York. If he is forced to step aside, it would trigger a special election in a fiercely competitive district. But in a federal financial disclosure document covering 2021 and 2022, Santos said his business, called the Devolder Organization, had begun producing millions of dollars in revenue and assets, some of which Santos says he loaned his political campaign. But in interviews this week, Santos has been defiant, blaming the scandal on liberal media. But Nassau County's Republican district attorney, Anne Donnelly, has also announced a probe to determine whether any of Santos' behavior violated the law. The Republican who misled voters about much of his life story is slated to be sworn in at the Capitol next week. Here he is again on WABC Radio. But a source has confirmed to NPR that the U.S. BRIAN MANN, BYLINE: Jorge Santos has acknowledged inventing or embellishing huge chunks of his official biography during the campaign on Long Island. If a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it, Donnelly said. I think it's stupid (laughter).
Representative-elect George Santos, under scrutiny after fabricating much of his résumé, also spent campaign funds on $40000 worth of air travel.
Mr. The source of Mr. But the disclosures do not name any of the clients who helped Mr. Santos’s campaign also paid for dozens of meals, including at high-end restaurants such as the Breakers in Palm Beach and the Capital Grille steakhouse in New York. Sean Patrick Maloney, the outgoing head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who lost to a Republican in the Hudson Valley, spent just $8,000 on air travel, according to his filings. Unusually for a candidate who was relatively new to politics, Mr. Questions arose about Mr. Several campaign finance experts said that paying rent for staff was unusual and could be a violation, though they said that the F.E.C. The suggestion that the Santos campaign engaged in any irresponsible spending of campaign funds is just ludicrous,” Mr. Santos, said in a statement that there had been some money spent “unwisely” by a firm that had been fired by the campaign more than a year earlier, but he said that all expenditures were legal. The payments to Cleaner 123 were among a litany of unusual disbursements documented in Mr. Santos and his husband coming and going, a possible violation of the rule prohibiting the use of campaign funds for personal expenses.
The New York Republican's list of fictions is long and keeps growing as more reporters join the investigation.
The political newcomer claimed not only to be an ex-banker but also a lover of animals: Mr Santos previously claimed to have founded a charity group called Friends of Pets United, taking credit for supposedly saving thousands of dogs and cats. Then there was the position paper uncovered by Axios in which he simply refers to himself as an “American Jew”, removing all doubt as to what he said. Turns out, that’s not true: He told City & State New York that he actually “does not own any properties” at all. What we do know is that an investment firm he founded in May of 2021 came into sudden wealth, bringing in millions of dollars to the degreeless Mr Santos, whose employment history remains murky. Another from the initial dispatch: Mr Santos did not, as it turns out, work at either Citigroup or Goldman Sachs. As it turns out, not only did he not graduate from either school, officials at both said there was no record of him attending under any alias.
Rolling Stone could not identify any records indicating that Santos mother entered a victims compensation claim or participated in 9/11 lawsuits.

A second investigation has been initiated by Long Island’s Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. “The search was extensive,” Feal tells Rolling Stone. Despite Santos’ assertion that his mother worked within the World Trade Center, Rolling Stone could find no employment records that would place Mrs. Devolder in or around the towers on September 11th.
