Sonehaven's Fireballs Festival at Hogmanay. Congratulations! If you're reading this, you've so far survived the first festive party season in three ...

By the way, if you have to cut through cobwebs to get to a drink, it’s not worth it. Who’s queuing round the block for a steak pie everyone will be too hungover to eat tomorrow? Give yourself a pat on the back – if you can still reach that far round.

The party equivalent of the wee boys at the window in Salem's Lot, this pair (they always come in pairs) will make themselves at home in your flat and never, ever leave. Tickets for the day session, the club and the after-party? Or he might just be a roaring pain in the a*se all night. They totally believe it too, even as they are going round getting a collection for Dial-a-Booze at 6am. They might nip out for another cargo, but they won't take the hint and go home with it. The polar opposite of The Professional, this clown has ignored every warning that the party is selling out fast and is now posting hopelessly optimistic messages on FB asking if anyone has any spares. Did they just hear the music and chance it? Massive carry-out back in the flat for later? Also expect to have to go find their keys/purse/phone at some point. He might be sick, he might try and fight you or get aff with you. Hogmanay is just another standard night out to this degenerate, but at least they blend in a bit more at this time of year. Ideally they'll justify their presence with good chat and fresh supplies, but there's always the possibility they'll just hide in the corner drinking your beer.

He would carry coal to bring warmth to the house, shortbread to ensure a year of plenty and whiskey to toast the health of all those in the house. The pudding is served with a whipped whiskey butter, from Islay of course, on the side. Clootie dumpling is a pudding like a Christmas pudding where dried fruit is mixed with spices, suet, breadcrumbs among other things and then steamed. The recipe here is for a slow cooked shoulder of pork with apple gravy. There are many variations of this recipe but the one featured here includes the essential element of chicken and leeks but with the addition of barley. There’s a myriad of food, drinks and traditions associated with bringing in the New Year.
