Local wildlife experts say it may be the first time a walrus has been seen in Yorkshire.

It is thought the animal may be "taking a break" and will move on in a few days once he is rested enough to continue his journey north.

The marine biologist said: “He’s a young male with lots of hormones going around his body and he needs to take care of himself in that kind of way. He’s probably not used to having crowds around him, coming from the Arctic – and potentially doesn’t have as much of a fear. While he’s there, he’s going to continue his natural behaviours he’d otherwise do if he was in his normal habitat.” Supposing in the case here, with the absence of another walrus, he’s taking care of that on his own. Thor is approximately three, still growing and is said to be “sexually mature but not socially mature” according volunteers at British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR). Although many may have been shocked by Thor’s sexual behaviour, Dan Jarvis, BDMLR’s Director of Welfare and Conservation, has explained Thor's what being 'sexually mature but lack of social maturity' means for Thor.
