JOHN MCGARRY: Raised in Easterhouse in the 1960s, his ability alone may have allowed him to carve out a stellar career in the professional game.

I was 29 and wanted to spend the rest of my days at Celtic, but he sold me on, even though the cup final goal made his job a lot safer.’ In 1979, his exploits with St Mirren saw Liverpool, then the English champions, pay £300,000 for his signature. His second stint at St Mirren ensured he assumed legendary status at two rival clubs. Two years later, he was part of the Buddies side who defeated Dundee United in the Scottish Cup final under Alex Smith. JOHN McGARRY: Frank McGarvey was the most courageous of strikers whose work rate made him a fans' favourite at Celtic and St Mirren... His first goal arrived later that month at home against a Hibs side featuring George Best. The Anfield giants reluctantly agreed to cut their losses and accept £250,000. McGarvey’s decision to sign for Celtic rather than Ferguson’s Aberdeen from Liverpool in 1980 was never going to make the peace. Last year, having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the father-of-four was made guest of honour at a Celtic match and took the acclaim of the supporters at half-time. A brilliant dribbler who was brave and deceptively strong on the ball, the teenage McGarvey was one of the hottest properties in Scottish football. He was sore at the manner of the departure but typically got on with the job at hand. The connection he enjoyed with every team he played for throughout a storied journey said everything for his unstinting commitment in each of his 500-plus matches.

FRANK McGARVEY: THE FINAL GOAL (Celtic Quick News)

DAVIE HAY was Celtic's manager when he decided to sell Frank McGarvey to St Mirren in the summer of 1985. On the face of it, it appeared a strange transfer…

I duly did so and I presented him with a deal that was identical to the one that was about to expire. I had also signed Alan McInally for £100,000 from Ayr United and the bustling hitman, nicknamed Rambo by the fans, was scoring on a regular basis, too. I already had Mo Johnston, signed for £400,000 from Watford in October that season, and Brian McClair to lead the attack. I thought he was on reasonable money and I told him so. By the way, that Cup winner was to be McGarvey’s last goal for the club and I have often been asked why I transferred him to St.Mirren that summer. I put O’Leary into the middle of the defence alongside Tom McAdam and freed Aitken to get forward on the right. ‘Take your eye off this lot and they will punish you,’ was one of the last things I said to my players in the dressing room. Frank was coming out of contract that summer and I decided to offer him an extension. Tommy was far from happy about being removed from the action. I felt it was appropriate that we do something about it. Inwardly, I knew I defeat was unthinkable. Outwardly, I was as upbeat as ever.
