Romantic Getaway star Katherine Ryan admits she 'ruined scenes ... (HELLO!)

Romesh Ranganathan and Katherine Ryan sat down with HELLO! to chat all about their new series Romantic Getaway for a special Spotlight Digital Cover…

Then after a little bit of research, we realised that we were idiots and so we had to work out the timeline of it, what the different stages were and all of that. Katherine: It was so much fun and really difficult not to laugh, especially under pressure when it's coming to the end of the day and everyone wants to be on time. We also had to think about how different stages of the process would affect her and affect the relationship and stuff like that. Whereas we used to be on the bill together in the basement of a pub, and we'd get to have a chat and see each other's comedy. There were lots of drafts where it bumped or it didn't quite work, or Alison was not in a realistic headspace for where she'd be in that journey. So I was so excited to be asked because not only was I really excited about the project and the character because you don't always see strong, funny, female leads, so I felt in very safe hands that way, but also it meant that I got to hang out with my mate for eight weeks in you know, early mornings and strenuous circumstances sometimes. I think comedians are so lucky in this country that we're mostly all very good friends and really supportive of one another and a lot of us started at the same time as well. I mean, I don't know if that meant it was a really hooky premise or that she just thought our ideas were [expletive]. So the initial idea was we wanted a cool heist show but it to be set in somewhere quite mundane, no disrespect to Reading. We kind of started working out the ideas over a few beers and then a woman from another table came over and started suggesting storylines. We just thought it was funny to have two people that weren't in that world to suddenly commit a crime out of necessity, and we wanted their relationship to be important. Romesh: Well, the initial idea was to start a show at the end of a crime being committed.

And who was waiting outside the bathroom door with a look on his face that said “I heard what you said”? But it’s the triumvirate of Ranganathan, Ryan and Vegas that make Romantic Getaway watchable, and having seen three episodes, it does manage to throw up unexpected twists. This entailed having to accompany Deacon on a drunken night out that ended up at a party at his boss’s house, and where he received a phone notification that Alison had just splurged £1,400 on a handbag. Having hacked into the company’s bank account and originally planned to steal £50,000, Deacon experienced a rush of blood to the head and added a nought to that number. There was also a sense of jeopardy, provided by Vegas of all people. For those looking for a hungover New Years Day watch, Romantic Getaway will hit just enough of the marks to keep you entertained as you peruse the menu of your local Chinese takeaway. It is, at least, watchable; the story is easy to follow; the plot tensions as cliché as they come, which is perfect for a casual weekday evening browse. On top of that, the combination of Deacon and Allison’s seemingly normal lives contrasted with a cartoon-like villain in their boss Alfie (who never gets the opportunity to exhibit any depth) only emphasises the lack of commitment to a single comedic style.

JOHNNY Vegas will star alongside Romesh Ranganathan and Katherine Ryan for a new drama Romantic Getaway on Sky.

He was unbelievable at it – it was so funny to watch him work." Those are things that we worked really hard on writing and bringing to screen. "But Phaldut took it to another level. "We always wanted it to be Johnny. It’s as touching in that respect, as it is wild and funny. "And it was really important to have that piece of realism in what is such a fun, exciting comedy drama.
