Rail strikes: Latest walkouts by RMT set to begin on Tuesday after ... (Evening Standard)

Commuters face travel misery on their return to work on Tuesday as a fresh wave of strike action on the railways is set to cause a week of chaos.

"The Government has demonstrated it is being reasonable and stands ready to facilitate a resolution to rail disputes. There’s been too much disruption on the railway caused by government policy and if we can get sensible proposals we can work up towards a solution.” They’re sitting on their hands and are noted by their absence from this scene. Rail workers had been offered a five per cent pay rise for last year and four per cent in 2023 – with a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies before 2025. “This dispute will only be resolved by agreeing the long overdue reforms to working arrangements needed to put the industry on a sustainable footing, rather than unions condemning their members to losing more pay in the new year.” Daniel Mann, director of industry operations at the Rail Delivery Group, said: “No-one wants to see these strikes go ahead and we can only apologise to passengers and to the many businesses who will be hit by this unnecessary and damaging disruption. "We are always happy to negotiate - we never refuse to sit down at the table and talk - but these companies have offered us nothing, and that is unacceptable." “The Government simply will not give a mandate to the employers, Network Rail and the train operators that will allow this deal to be resolved. A Department for Transport spokesperson said:“Passengers have rightly had enough of rail strikes and want the disruption to end. As people return to work and school, disruption is expected as train operators plan to resume strike action during the first week of the new year.

Of the companies that say they are running a service, Great Western Railway will shuttle between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads, with links from Reading running to Oxford and Basingstoke. Some trains will extend north of Preston to Lancaster and Carlisle, but flooding has closed the line into Scotland. We would advise passengers to only travel if it is absolutely necessary during this period, allow extra time and check when their first and last train will depart.” On the east side, links from Leeds will run to Selby, York, Ilkley, Skipton, Bradford, Doncaster and Sheffield. Lumo has three trains each way between London and Edinburgh. The Night Riviera sleeper service will not run on any strike night, nor the intervening days between 48-hour walk-outs. The rail strikes coincide with people returning to work and school after the new year, with only 20 percent of trains expected to run. On Thursday (January 5), thousands of train drivers belonging to the Aslef union who work for 15 train operators will strike. Additional trains will serve York and Newcastle. The national operator will be running a strike timetable right through the week, with a very limited service based around and between Edinburgh and Glasgow (which are connected by two fast trains an hour via Falkirk High). As the Christmas festivities are over for another year, people will be thinking about returning to normality, and of course, that means…work. The unions say they want a fair pay rise, assurances on job retention and no changes to working conditions without negotiation.

"I would much rather they got off the picket line and got back round the negotiating table to hammer out a deal on reform and pay with the employers," he said. But Helen West, who has commuted to Chester from Lancaster said she had been "severely disrupted by the rail strikes", but added she had "solidarity" with the striking workers. "The current train service is not fit for purpose and I don't support the train strikes as in order to strike they should at least provide a decent service which they don't," the 35-year-old said. Both Network Rail and the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents the train operating companies, have people only to travel if "absolutely necessary" due to services being cancelled and disrupted. Corinne Curtis, from Somerset, said she supported the right to strike and did not "begrudge" the action, but said it meant she had lost the equivalent of a month's rent in earnings because she cannot get to work on strike days and is on a zero hours contract. Boss Tim Shoveller urged the union to "sit down with us" and revisit the deal made before Christmas so it could "make clarifications" where elements of the deal had been "misunderstood".

RMT alleges a 50 per cent cut in scheduled maintenance tasks was also outlined by Network Rail in this recent offer; the deal was dependent on changes to working practices in maintenance teams, which would involve 1,900 job losses. In reference to the latest Network Rail offer, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “We will resist that and our members, along with the entire trade union movement will continue their campaign for a square deal for workers, decent pay increases and good working conditions.” This dispute involves a separate dispute, in which the RMT is talking to the Rail Delivery Group. Deal to stop UK train strikes 'in touching distance', says Network Rail (The Guardian)

Chief negotiator says better communications could sway union members, as first of five days of rail strikes begins.

Harper told Sky News: “There is a fair and reasonable pay offer on the table. “While I don’t have a specific timescale for you, we recognise the urgency of this and are working as such.” Network Rail said only about 20% of trains were running on Tuesday, while any trains that were running were scheduled between 7.30am and 6.30pm. There is not a bottomless pit of taxpayers’ money here. Shoveller said “we only need 2,000 people who voted no last time to change their vote and the deal will pass”. “The way to resolve that dispute is through an agreement and what we’re saying to the RMT is that it’s very clear from the referendum that they held – they did it very quickly, it was only open for a few days – that actually that was rushed, and it didn’t allow and give time for people to ask genuine questions there are associated with the reform elements of this deal,” he added.

Rail Strikes: Mick Lynch Accuses Ministers Of Torpedoing Deal (HuffPost UK)

Transport secretary Mark Harper hit back: “That's simply not true."

“We’ve done the opposite of trying to block a deal. “They’ve got to hammer out the detailed negotiations. “When I took over as transport secretary a couple of months ago, I met the trade union leaders including Mr Lynch. We’ve actually tried to facilitate a deal and as I said in the new year it’s time for the RMT to get off the picket line around the negotiating table.” “They they got themselves into a position before Christmas, where we were making progress with the train operating companies, and on one Sunday afternoon before a set of strike action, they decided to torpedo those talks by putting in conditions in the documentation that they know that we and the other unions can never accept.” [Mark Harper](https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/rail-strike-deal-to-be-done-to-avoid-christmas-chaos-says-transport-secretary_uk_637f875ce4b09a86b1b0ee1d) denied this, saying they had “done the opposite” and were trying to facilitate a deal.
