Waterloo Road: Chlo's death helped Adam Thomas process his own ... (Metro)

His father died when he was about to start working on the storyline which saw Donte's wife Chlo die.

It basically follows Donte on that journey throughout the series, which was great as an actor to play.’ ‘It’s great for me as an actor to basically get my teeth into such a great storyline, following the journey that Donte goes on. You come back, it’s all happy families and then this sudden death happens at the end of episode one. ‘It’s just about him and he can’t believe what’s happened to him, he’s in a state of shock. ‘I just watched them grow throughout the series, which was amazing. I didn’t see it coming at all. He’s not necessarily thinking about his kids at first. ‘There’s not many jobs that come along where you get to work with your son and little niece, and the fact that we get to go back to one of the first jobs I was ever in and I get to take them on that journey and be on that journey with them,’ he enthused. Scarlett is just unbelievable and I’m just so proud of both of them and I can’t wait for the world to see what they have in store, really.’ ‘So researching about grief and trying to understand it a lot more, I possibly would never have done that if it wasn’t for the character in this storyline and it helped me with my own grief as well, it helped me understand that a lot better.’ On playing the scenes, he said: ‘It was amazing and I tried to put a little bit of myself into it as well and tried to use my own experience about the grief and about his anger issues, because it’s not plain sailing for Donte throughout the series. ‘He finds it quite hard at first and I think he sort of tries to pull things together at the end of the series but he’s still got a lot of work to do.’

Adam Thomas giggles as he issues apology to Waterloo Road fans ... (Manchester Evening News)

The new revival series began on BBC One and saw Adam reprise his role as Donte Charles with his real-life family.

"I've tried to reply to all of you but I'm done in. He then started to laugh as he quipped: "I don't know I'm bloody born. @zak_2021_123 commented: "Massive kick in the teeth what was the point of bringing back Chlo if you’re just gonna kill her off in the first episode." Filming himself in the bed of his hotel room, the former Emmerdale star said into the camera: "Er..." Shoutout to the rest of the cast, what a phenomenal job they all did. She was why half of us wanted to watch again to see her and donte back on the screen. After a traffic backlog due to the pupils' unruly protest, the mum-of-two walked the rest of the way with daughter Izzie as Donte turned round and headed off to work. But Adam, who had already been promoting the series on his Instagram throughout the day as well as making an appearance alongside Katie on The One Show, had a different response. But after the nervous youngster got a pep talk from her dad, who said he wished he could do it again and that he was 'jealous' of what his little girl was about to experience, disaster struck. Chlo and Donte appeared more loved up than ever until a dramatic turn of events saw Chlo collapse in the kitchen. After returning home later in the day to her worried husband Donte, Chlo revealed she had realised she wanted become a teaching assistant at the school. The hit show was filmed at Hill Top Primary School in Rochdale before relocating to Scotland and ran from 2006 to 2015.

'Waterloo Road's Adam Thomas On Grief & Losing Chlo (Bustle)

Bustle caught up with the actor ahead of him reprising the iconic role of Donte Charles. Here's what he had to say.

Going through that grieving process definitely helped me to deliver some of the performances throughout the series, because it was something that was very close and very raw and truthful to me. At the same time, it was something that I could relate to, because I'd just lost my dad. We get guests on from the show and talk to them about their character, and their storylines and the whole process. How important is it for a show like this to evolve with the times? Some of the topics that we discuss and portray… She always fought my corner, and she always knew that I was gonna make it, in a weird sort of way. I was very nervous because it said in the script that we had to kiss, and I was like, ‘Oh god, I've never done a kissing scene before on camera.’ I just went in for the kiss during rehearsals, and she was like, ‘Wow, what are you doing?’ She just pulled away from me in front of everyone, and I was mortified! I remember my first day on the original series, and the first time I’d ever done a scene with Katie Griffiths [Donte’s long-time love interest Chlo]. The teachers didn't hate me, because they knew that I was a nice kid, but I was always getting up to no good. We had all these cameras around, and all this crew, and I just had to take a step back and go… This was the first job that I ever had, and it sort of put me on the map and gave me a platform. Now, though, it’s making its return, with a whole host of beloved characters from the OG series, including Donte and Chlo, and a brand new set of students.
