Arsenal vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result, final score and ... (The Independent)

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle: Gunners endure frustrating stalemate but still clear atop Premier League table.

Joe Willock goes down off the ball and can’t continue. He’s forced out wide by Saliba and can’t return the ball into the penalty area before it runs out for a goal kick. The Gunners’ lead at the top of the table goes to eight points but the door is ajar for Manchester City to close that to five on Thursday. Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford have the goals. In doing so, they have also passed a real test of their top-four credentials. This 0-0 draw may not be as damaging as the 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park back in May, but it will carry a similar feeling of irritation for the Gunners.

Arsenal and Arteta frustrated by Newcastle's defensive masterclass (The Guardian)

Arsenal dropped their first home points of the season after they were held to a 0-0 draw by third-placed Newcastle.

Arteta’s reaction on the touchline was explosive; it felt a bit much, as his team had not played badly and are still superbly placed at the summit. No opponent had taken as much as a point from the Emirates all season and that said plenty for Newcastle’s achievement. On the half-time whistle Joelinton had stretched and missed a header from close in after a corner had been flicked on; there was the occasional bout of head tennis inside Arsenal’s box later but little to yield realistic hope of an away win. They will come up against few defences as expertly drilled as this, though, and the outcome ultimately goes down as a masterclass in frustration and organisation from the visitors. He also felt an incident midway through the second half, when Dan Burn appeared to get hold of Gabriel Magalhães’ shirt at a set piece, should have been punished but really this was a rare occasion on which Arsenal did not quite do enough. But the sight of Mikel Arteta being dragged away from confronting Eddie Howe after full time spoke of the needle that took little time to rear its head here; Howe had got exactly what he came for and it was not hard, for different reasons, to see why these teams have lost only a game apiece all season.

A frustrating night for Arsenal, both on and off the pitch. Newcastle remain third after becoming the first visiting team to take points off the Gunners since Brighton secured a 2-1 victory in north London back in April. Credit to Newcastle who were very well organised and disciplined. Couldn’t react in time. Both sides had penalty appeals waved away but neither could genuinely claim to deserve more than a point from a fractious encounter of eight yellow cards but few chances. Get a sneak peek of our skipper's programme notes ahead of our first match of 2023 against Newcastle United.

Everyone will be aware of that and really looking forward to this one. Our defeat against them late last season was definitely one of the worst days we’ve had in recent seasons. They have obviously been in great form this season, but even last season they showed a lot of quality. The whole build-up was good and the way Eddie turned in the box and the finish was brilliant! I thought the third goal, especially, was a great goal. I had some more rest than other players, not being in the World Cup, so I think I've used that in a good way and I felt good.

Arsenal lose their cool as Newcastle test title credentials (ESPN)

When his Arsenal needed cool and calm, Mikel Arteta fed into the chaos, as the league leaders were frustrated to be held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle.

This time last year, Newcastle were second-bottom of the Premier League and facing the real prospect of being the richest club in the Championship until Howe dramatically transformed their fortunes and steered the team away from relegation danger. Arteta has brought some much-needed passion back to Arsenal, on and off the pitch, but he now needs to tone it down and learn to balance it out with calmness. Arteta has done a remarkable job in his three years as Arsenal manager and could deliver their first Premier League title since 2004 this season, but he needs to calm down on the touchline to help make that happen. They are still in the driver's seat, but it will be a long five months between now and the end of the season. They had plenty of flair on the pitch, but Arsenal didn't know how to use it, and their inexperience shone through in this game. 22, Arsenal are going to have to find a Plan B to win games if they are to clinch the title.
