Danny Ings rescued a 1-1 draw for Aston Villa against Wolves as Unai Emery and Julen Lopetegui met for the first time in the Premier League.

Mings looped a simple ball down the middle of the pitch and Ings feasted on some slack defending to stroke a shot past Sá and in to earn a point. Lopetegui is animated at the best of times and flew off down touchline after the Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara was presented with a half-chance from the edge of the box. The Argentina goalkeeper made few friends in the final and his antics, notably throwing the ball away for Aurélien Tchouaméni to fetch before the midfielder missed his penalty in the shootout, prompted the French Football Federation to lodge a formal complaint. Lopetegui, too, made a change and Adama Traoré entered in place of Podence. Emery knew he had to change something at half-time and introduced Philippe Coutinho in place of Ashley Young. With 15 minutes to play Ings, thrown on as part of a triple substitution, cancelled out Daniel Podence’s classy opener and in the third of four added second-half minutes Bailey rounded the Wolves goalkeeper, José Sá, but somehow failed to apply the most simple of finishes.

Any way back would need to come from a Wolves mistake. A cross was only cleared to Podence on the touchline and he swapped passes with Joao Moutinho to wriggle into the area. Several corners and deep crosses were tossed into the Villa box, each of them repelled, but the hosts’ brief resistance broke after 12 minutes when Wolves worked their way through with some style.

Martinez was strong to take the sting out of Adama’s powerful cross just after the break while, with eight remaining, stood firm to keep Adama’s effort out not knowing the offside flag was raised. Loud boos were fired at the players as they headed in and, after the restart, Emery drafted on Philippe Coutinho for Young while, not long after the hour, Ings, Ludwig Augustinsson and Leander Dendoncker all came on with Villa in real need of some fresh legs. Joao Moutinho popped a lovely ball into Podence before the little Portuguese danced past Douglas Luiz and fired home into the far corner for 1-0. Matty Cash was his replacement on the right-hand side of midfield while, in goal, Emery drafted World Cup winner Emi Martinez back in.
