But the ridiculousness of the candidates and their untempered bravado remains a constant. The 2005 iteration of The Apprentice is less slick and even more concerned with candidate bickering than today’s version (hard to believe, I know). The task was refreshingly simple: buy a load of flowers and flog them on a market. One scrap broke out when both teams decided they would make pack lunches for the task ahead, rather than taking £50 each out of the £500 budget for “lunch and incidentals”. The episode was more Big Brother than business competition, with plenty of attention given to the candidates’ fights in their house share. Back then, the candidates were competing for a six-figure salaried job in Lord Sugar’s company Amstrad, while today’s cohort are after a £250k investment in their own business ideas.

In 2010, after two years - yes, really - at the company, he left to start up his own recruitment company. Since appearing on the show, business has been well and truly booming for Alana, who has reportedly bought back her shares from Lord Sugar - which means that she is the sole owner of her company. She published an autobiography called Anything Is Possible in 2007 and became a columnist for magazine Business Matters in 2009. Sadly for James, his business suffered following his appearance on The Apprentice and he is also reported to have fallen out with Lord Sugar. Tom's series seven win was an unusual one, a simple nail file that was enough to get the backing of Lord Sugar. The business is still going, with Ricky listed as company director on gov.uk. Series 13, which ran in 2017, was an unusual - and memorable - year for The Apprentice: because it was the first time that two people had jointly won first place.
