Martin spoke to Metro.co.uk about starring in the series, which was directed by Bodyguard and LOD’s John Strickland, and teased what fans can expect. The Rig, Prime Video, review: This is no slick supernatural thriller ... (iNews)

Despite a cast pulled from Game of Thrones and Line of Duty, this stormy thriller fails to deliver thanks to dodgy effects and awkward climate change metaphors.

With Alwyn (Bonnar) warning that “if you keep punching holes in the earth, eventually the earth’s going to punch back”, the drama is hardly a subtle metaphor for man’s comeuppance for draining the planet’s resources. With mysterious ash now raining down from the sky, it soon turns out to be a very bad idea indeed to be outside. But spread over nearly six hours, it feels slack and at times, a bit naff. Unfortunately, the execution doesn’t quite live up to these possibilities. Ten minutes into the first episode, things to go awry: communications systems are down, there’s a power blackout, there are unexplained tremors and their helicopters home have been diverted away. Already strained relations are pushed further by the first episode’s climax: mouthy but well-meaning Baz (Calvin Demba, Life) falling from a comms tower, even though we definitely saw him clip his safety harness securely.

The Rig ending explained: How Season 1 of new horror series sets ... (Dexerto)

The ending of new Amazon Prime horror show The Rig explained, including how it sets up a potential Season 2.

That’s the question at the heart of The Rig – why the ancestors are here, and what they want. Baz believes that if the Ancestors see what we can give – and are willing to sacrifice ourselves for their sake – then extinction might be avoided. The wave that Baz warned of in Episode 2 then approaches; a tsunami that will wipe the place out. Now it seems they aren’t happy with Pictor – the company that owns the rig – for pulling oil out of the ground. But then David Coakes shows up in Episode 5 – played by The Full Monty’s Mark Addy – and he becomes The Rig’s antagonist. The crew of the Bravo will be driven to the limits of both their loyalties and their endurance, into a confrontation with forces beyond their imagination. Magnus and his crew aboard the Kinloch Bravo oil rig are stationed off the Scottish coast in the dangerous waters of the North Sea. When the mist rolls in, the workers on Kinloch Bravo are plunged into darkness. Due to their age, characters start calling them The Ancestors. As the crew endeavour to discover what’s driving this unknown force, a major accident forces them to ask questions about who they can really trust. The show is written by David Machpherson, while the first three episodes are directed by Line of Duty helmer John Strickland. But now we’re going to dig into the show’s ending.

The Rig review: evocative thriller marks a strong start to 2023 for ... (NationalWorld)

Martin Compston, Iain Glen, and Emily Hampshire star in The Rig, an evocative new supernatural thriller from David Macpherson and John Strickland.

I’ve seen the first three episodes before writing this review. Ultimately, The Rig is a compellingly made thriller, brought to life by a talented cast, as memorable in its bigger moments as its smaller ones. Macpherson is quick to sketch out the dynamic between the characters, what unites them and what divides them, which the cast then run with: impressively for a cast of its size (around 14 major speaking parts in the first episode alone), there’s never a danger of anyone being crowded out particularly or feeling short-changed by the series. What’s more important – and more impressive – is what The Rig does well and does distinctly on its own terms. Advertisement The camera pans across his shoulder, fixing its gaze on the window behind him and offering a brief glimpse of the swirling cloud of ash and smoke and rain that surrounds Kinloch Bravo oil rig.

Baz (Calvin Demba) falls from a high tower, his body apparently smashed to near death. We can only review based on the first three episodes of the show Amazon sent us, so maybe it all falls to pieces in the end, but so far The Rig is a very satisfying show, almost despite itself. The Rig has had a sizeable amount of hype for months now; partly because of its high-quality ensemble cast, partly because it looks like the kind of thing real money has been invested in, and to a degree simply because the central idea really grabs the attention.

“It is a Scots story and a Scots production and benefits because of that,” he says. “I can’t rock and roll it quite to the degree I used to,” laments Glen. “The mix of actors was very organic and lent itself well to the story. “I am conscious of not causing damage and distress to the current school because I think it is very hard for people to separate those two. “I can be literally anywhere in the world and will get stopped by people.” “For it to be shot in Edinburgh which, of course, is where I was born and bred, and be close to my mum and dad who are still here, it was just perfect. “I left university after a couple of years to go to RADA. I think it is the most beautiful city architecturally in the whole of the UK. “I think he is going to have a stunning career and he deserves it. He knew about the rigs because of his father and it was a perfect fit with his interest in geology and the history of the planet. “Thank God, I was wearing the harness.” “I managed to fall off this crane, which was quite high, having been slightly dismissive of the fact that they wanted to attach safety harnesses to me …”

The Rig review: Genre blend of maddening mystery doesn't hit the spot (Metro)

Life on the rig feels authentically researched, but if only there had been a similarly nuanced approach to the plot and character writing.

If only there had been a similarly nuanced approach to the character writing. Particularly when you’re trapped on an oil rig, a thick, enveloping fog is cutting out all communication with the outside world, and a mysterious ash billowing across this windswept scene is doing strange things to people’s insides. Which is a shame because there are some really interesting ideas here from debut writer David Macpherson.
