Boro go into the game on the back of three straight league wins and six from their last seven. While they come up against Premier League opposition in this one, ...

From a coach's point of view and how they set up and the problems they can cause. They have good options and a lot of players to choose from who are of a really good calibre and standard. Graeme (Potter) did such a good job of developing a lot of good players and defining a clear style of play. "Maybe people who haven't seen a lot of them wouldn't understand how good they have been or how good they are at the moment. It's a great challenge for us as a club and a group of players. McNair is on for Lenihan, who misses out on the squad altogether. They were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup to Charlton, with that defeat serving as a wake-up call ahead of this one. Someone Boro would like this month, but given they can get him for nothing in the summer, it's one they don't need to push too hard for. Steffen initially pulls off a good save as Giles is caught out allowing March to steal into the box unmarked. "Against Charlton, we played well but maybe there was something missing because we lost the game. Gross reacts quicker than Howson to the rebound though and fires home. While they come up against Premier League opposition in this one, they had great success in last season's [competition,](https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/all-about/FA-cup) beating Manchester United and Tottenham on their way to the quarter-finals.

Brighton and Hove Albion progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup thanks to a 5-1 victory against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

The Argentina star helped himself to a second with 10 minutes remaining when he turned Gross’ cross confidently past Steffen to make it 4-1. The Seagulls regained the lead with half an hour gone when Mitoma turned Solly March’s cross back across goal and Adam Lallana had the simplest of tasks to head home from point-blank range. Came on for the second-half and made an immediate impact by guiding Estupinan's off-target shot in with his heel. On hand to put away the rebound for the opener after Lallana missed his opportunity. Good when on the ball and linked up well with Lamptey making the overlapping runs. Started off the move that led to Brighton's fourth goal, playing the ball out wide for March and Gross to link up. Raced forward when Albion were on the ball to provide support for March on the right. Picked up a booking for a clumsy fould on Akpom. Invited Boro's forward line to apply pressure and, with the exception of the mistake for Akpom's goal, was calm when on the ball. Snatched the ball off Marcus Forss to start Brighton's attack for Gross' opener. Put in a well-timed sliding tackle to stop Cameron Archer going through on goal in the second-half. Positioned himself well at times when Boro played cutbacks from the byline and was good in the air. His charging run with the ball into Boro's half led to the third goal. Managed to stop Matt Crooks' cross but Akpom's following header just crossed the line despite Steel getting to it.

Alexis Mac Allister hits double as Brighton sweep Middlesbrough ... (The Guardian)

Brighton thrashed Middlesbrough 5-1 in the FA Cup third round at the Riverside, with Alexis Mac Allister getting two goals in the second half.

Although Steele swiftly enjoyed a redemptive moment of his own as he saved superbly from the counterattacking Riley McGree, Brighton were generally far too quick and slick for Carrick’s team. Indeed in the albeit increasingly rare moments when Boro attacked and their fluid, ultra-flexible default 4-2-3-1 formation morphed into a temporary 3-5-2, they suggested better days lie ahead. Giles, at fault in the preamble to Gross’s goal, simply looked relieved. “It was more difficult than the scoreline suggests, Middlesbrough are a good team but Alexis is a top-quality player and very important for us. He made four changes from the side which won comfortably at Everton on Tuesday but, resisting the temptation to rotate, Carrick fielded Boro’s strongest available starting X1. From the moment Mac Allister scored his first goal, an outrageous backheel, no one could possibly argue that Brighton did not deserve their place in the FA Cup’s fourth round.

The hosts could simply not escape their own half with Moises Caicedo and Mac Allister dominating the middle of the park and the Argentinian got his reward when he reacted smartly to flick Estupinan’s raking shot past Steffen and inside his left post. Steele saved comfortably from Crooks and Jan Paul Van Hecke hacked away Akpom’s cross at the near post as Boro responded but Steffen had to deal with a well-struck Mitoma effort to ensure the hosts went in at the break just a single goal in deficit. Steffen was slightly less convincing in dealing with Gross’ 26th-minute free-kick and was picking the ball out of his net once again on the half-hour when Mitoma fed March’s cross back to the far post and Lallana headed home from point-blank range.
