Virgin Orbit launch today – live: UK's first-ever rocket mission takes ... (The Independent)

Rocket is first ever to leave from UK soil, and carries first satellites to be launched from Europe.

And the second plane most tracked plane – with 22,000 people watching it – is a seemingly otherwise unremarkable flight from Madrid to Keflavik in Iceland, which just happens to be going sort of near ‘Cosmic Girl’. “The culmination of all of that is putting these exciting missions into space. The rocket is gradually moving through various ground stations as it sends data back down to Earth. It just finished the first burn of its second stage. The rocket’s journey is nearing its end. The official live stream is currently being hit by a flurry of complaints.

It’s exciting, different, it’s also a bit of an underdog story.” About an hour after take-off, the rocket will be detached at 10,700 metres (35,000ft). Plus a marquee with a silent disco, which promised to be a useful way of staying warm. There were food stalls and a merchandise stand selling beanies, T-shirts, even a Cornish Spaceport-branded bellyboard (£75). There was a big screen that will track the mission and – the staple of any modern festival – a VIP section with leather armchairs. Virgin Orbit Cornwall launch: Everything you need to know (UKTN)

Virgin Orbit has been given the go-ahead for the first orbital launch from the UK with the initial launch window starting from today at 22:16.

[delay the launch](https://www.uktech.news/deep-tech/spaceport-cornwall-launch-delay-20221208) as a result of “additional technical work”. And with continued investment, this could double to £30bn by 2030.” In fact, most of the vehicle is a plane – a converted Boeing 747 that has been largely stripped out to reduce weight. Cornwall Airport Newquay was nominated as a potential launch site eight years ago and has since attracted more than £20m in funding. Virgin Orbit is a US company founded by billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson. It will be the first-ever orbital space launch from British soil, and if all goes to plan could pave the way for a fresh wave of UK space tech innovation in Cornwall and across the country. – The UK’s Ministry of Defence’s Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is launching two cubesat satellites, dubbed “Prometheus-2”, to aid its science and technology ventures from its base in Portsmouth. – Space Forge, based in Cardiff, is using its seat on the mission to carry out the first in-space test for its reusable satellite capable of making materials in orbit. Virgin Orbit’s adapted Boeing 747 “Cosmic Girl” should be viewable in the UK within the first minute of launch, illustrated by the blue and cyan on the map below. It is one of several sites across the UK hoping to usher in an age of UK satellite launches. “We are entering a new era for space in the UK with the first ever satellite launch from UK soil and from Europe,” said Ian Annett, deputy CEO of the UK Space Agency. “This is a significant landmark for the nation, the UK Space Agency and for all those who have worked so hard over many years to make our ambitions to create a commercial space launch capability a reality.”

How to see the UK's first ever rocket launch in the sky tonight (Time Out)

Virgin's LauncherOne craft will take off from Cornwall and travel at a whopping 8000 miles per hour.

[Virgin Orbit YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpz2PZJHMLcK7rH_1oup7Sw) has a countdown to the launch and will be showing it live. Virgin Orbit says people in the UK and Ireland should be able to see LauncherOne within 60 seconds of it being launched from the jet. It will take about an hour for travel to launch zone, before the rocket is released in mid-air. The LauncherOne is a rocket attached to an aircraft (formerly a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747), named Cosmic Girl, which will take off tonight. The satellites that will be launched from the rocket include one which will join a constellation monitoring illegal fishing, smuggling, trafficking, piracy and terrorism. A former Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 known as Cosmic Girl will set off from Cornwall in the middle of the night, with a rocket known as LauncherOne attached to its left wing.

UK's first orbital rocket mission takes off from Cornwall (The Guardian)

Virgin Orbit's Start Me Up mission heralded as start of new space era as Boeing 747 to deliver rocket carrying satellites into orbit.

Among those with satellites onboard were the Ministry of Defence, the sultanate of Oman, the US National Reconnaissance Office and British startups including Space Forge, which is developing reusable satellites. The next time we go it will be even better.” This isn’t the first time we’ve been knocked but this is the biggest definitely. This helps put us back on the map.” Our mission isn’t over yet, but our congratulations to the people of the UK! “We don’t know what caused the anomaly but we achieved a launch,” he said. Melissa Thorpe, the head of Spaceport Cornwall, expressed disappointment but added: “We’re a resilient team. Cosmic Girl, flown by RAF test pilot Sqn Ldr Matthew Stannard, took off just after 10pm and carried out a “fin wiggle” to clear ice from LauncherOne over the Atlantic. Twenty-eight minutes later it tweeted: “We appear to have an anomaly that has prevented us from reaching orbit. “The trajectory puts it over main bodies of water, so it’s completely safe,” he said. This is already the first-ever orbital mission from British soil – an enormous achievement.” The 747 returned to Cornwall safely.

You can watch that by clicking on the link at the top of our page. The LauncherOne rocket will fall away. It's part of the mission is complete. ForgeStar-0 is the first ever Welsh satellite that will test key technologies for an eventual constellation of mini-factories that would fabricate novel materials in space, eg new types of alloy. Dover is a satellite that will test a novel way to provide precise timing information from space. The Coordinated Ionospheric Reconstruction CubeSat Experiment (CIRCE) is a pair of satellites carrying "space weather" sensors. These are cameras that see the Earth's surface at a multitude of different wavelengths of light. But Cosmic Girl has just returned to Spaceport Cornwall - landing on the runway here. It's a way of detecting illegal fishers and smugglers. “In space, with the absence of gravity, you can mix together any different materials you want,” says Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bacon. So we're just here to support you know, get virgin backup and get another rocket over here." He didn't give any more explanation for the failure.

Virgin's Cosmic Girl has reached the area where it was due to send off the LauncherOne rocket. This is a success for Cornwall as it will attract a lot of businesses here now, but it's also a success for the UK. We dutifully pointed her in the direction of Da Bara's stall. A success for Spaceport Cornwall but the Virgin Orbit vessel and mission has failed. The plane is now heading back to Newquay. UK space launch: Historic Cornwall rocket launch ends in failure (BBC News)

The first ever satellite mission launched from UK soil has a technical problem on its climb to space.

But it's space and the cliché is it's hard. Dan Hart, the CEO of Virgin Orbit, said: "We are mindful that we failed to provide our customers with the launch service they deserve. The ambition is to turn the country into a global player - from manufacturing satellites, to building rockets and creating new spaceports. Those earlier efforts were part of military exercises or for atmospheric research, and the vehicles involved came straight back down. The rocket ignited and appeared to be ascending correctly. "We will work tirelessly to understand the nature of the failure, make corrective actions, and return to orbit as soon as we have completed a full investigation and mission assurance process."

Following the failed launch, the Virgin Orbit chief said the “first-time nature” of the mission added layers of complexity. The UK Space Agency’s Director of Commercial Spaceflight Matt Archer said the Virgin Orbit rocket launch result was “disappointing”. As we find out more, we’re removing our previous tweet about reaching orbit. “Launching a spacecraft always carries significant risks. Virgin Orbit’s mission was planned to be the first-ever rocket to launch from UK soil, as well as the first one carrying satellites to be launched from Western Europe into space. The launch was an opportunity for Virgin Orbit to show its investors what it was capable of, but the failure has led to its tanking as much as a third in after-hours trading and is set for a $200m fall. UK space chiefs plan to try again after rocket launch ends in failure (The Guardian)

Virgin Orbit will work 'tirelessly' to investigate what went wrong and attempt second mission within a year.

It had hoped a successful mission would be a huge boost to the region’s growing space sector. Melissa Thorpe, the head of Spaceport Cornwall, said: “We made it to space – a UK first. He replied: “Flight heritage [an industry term for proof a technology works in space] is an important factor.” But he said: “We would expect to see further launches from the UK within a year.” Virgin Orbit added that out of five LauncherOne missions carrying payloads for private companies and governmental agencies, this was the first to fall short of their target orbits. However, at some point during the firing of the rocket’s second stage engine and with the rocket travelling at a speed of more than 11,000mph, the system experienced an anomaly, ending the mission prematurely.” It said: “The rocket then ignited its engines, quickly going hypersonic and successfully reaching space.

Science minister George Freeman said: “This is a genuinely historic moment as the UK becomes the first country to launch satellites from Europe. “There was a space race for this moment, as we wanted to beat Norway and Sweden for the first orbital rocket launch from Europe,” he said. So, I would say it’s a little bit away, but it’s definitely the ambition of the Virgin Group to have that point-to-point travel. “The need for speed meant we would launch as soon as we were ready. But tonight we became the first country to launch from European soil. As the plane turned back to the spaceport, the rocket was meant to ignite its engine and take the small satellites, with a variety of civil and defence applications, into orbit. you only get to see the first space launch from the UK once. “The first-time nature of this mission added layers of complexity that our team professionally managed through,” he said. It matters to the team here at Spaceport Cornwall and to everybody in Mission Control. Ellie, 12, and Lily Thomas, 10, have come to the airport from Penzance with their mother, Nadine, and her partner, Alan Booker. The point is they have to run through all of that in their test data and decide what caused it. “I’m just so happy everybody is safe, and that the flight crew got off.
