Virgin Orbit launch today – live: UK's first-ever rocket mission takes ... (The Independent)

Rocket is first ever to leave from UK soil, and carries first satellites to be launched from Europe.

And the second plane most tracked plane – with 22,000 people watching it – is a seemingly otherwise unremarkable flight from Madrid to Keflavik in Iceland, which just happens to be going sort of near ‘Cosmic Girl’. “The culmination of all of that is putting these exciting missions into space. The rocket is gradually moving through various ground stations as it sends data back down to Earth. It just finished the first burn of its second stage. The rocket’s journey is nearing its end. The official live stream is currently being hit by a flurry of complaints.

Spaceport Cornwall is ready for Cosmic Girl to take off, carrying the Virgin Orbit rocket that will take nine satellites into space.

Virgin's Cosmic Girl has reached the area where it was due to send off the LauncherOne rocket. This is a success for Cornwall as it will attract a lot of businesses here now, but it's also a success for the UK. We dutifully pointed her in the direction of Da Bara's stall. A success for Spaceport Cornwall but the Virgin Orbit vessel and mission has failed. The plane is now heading back to Newquay. Cosmic Girl took off from Newquay, carrying a rocket to send nine satellites into orbit.

At the centre of it all has been Cornwall Airport Newquay - a small airport with big ambitions, that is now the hub for Spaceport Cornwall, partnering with Virgin Orbit. Cornwall Airport Newquay was chosen as the base for Spaceport Cornwall due to its existing infrastructure. ‘Start Me Up’ was chosen in tribute to the Rolling Stones. Having already assisted the Satellite Applications Catapult with testing and preparations, we’re set to provide tracking and comms during its launch and will run daily mission ops from our OCA at Goonhilly." Explaining about its role, GES said: "We’re thrilled to have supported the Spaceport Cornwall project from the very start. And It's not just Newquay that is playing an important role in this mission.

Spaceport Cornwall: From pasty memes to rocket launch (BBC News)

The first orbital space launch from the UK is set to take off from Cornwall.

"Cornwall had that foresight eight years ago to start investing and start creating the infrastructure around a spaceport. it's a real Cornish success story." "The spaceport now is one of the things that demonstrates to our children that that is not the case anymore. The existence of a UK spaceport is ground-breaking, but with more coming in remote parts of Scotland and Wales in particular, the Cornish team is keen to build on momentum. Every school in Cornwall has been visited by spaceport representatives, and giving opportunities to young people has been an important part of the mission. The spaceport has partnered with Virgin Orbit for this mission, and will continue to have a relationship with the company, but is seeking other partners also. "What made Spaceport Cornwall a really attractive place is that it is in the South West which has a really lively space cluster. Ian Annett, deputy chief executive of the UK Space Agency, said being on the brink of launch was "immense" and "feels like a national moment". The spaceport also has access to the 2.7km (1.7 mile) runway at Cornwall Airport Newquay, one of the longest in the UK. Businesses are now interested in moving to Cornwall as a direct result of the spaceport." In the early days of Cornwall's bid to build a spaceport "we got laughed at", Spaceport Cornwall boss Melissa Thorpe recalls. The first orbital space launch from the UK is due to take off on Monday from Cornwall Airport Newquay, eight years after it was shortlisted as a potential spaceport site.

It shows that Cornwall can do it and we will do it again." He said: "There is a lot that has been achieved and we will press on. Melissa Thorpe, head of Spaceport Cornwall, said there was a lot of hurt in the space sector as so many hopes had been pinned onto this maiden launch from Cornwall. Space is hard and we knew there was a risk of failure. Cornwall took a giant leap when it hosted the first ever UK space launch from British soil even though it ended in failure - but this is not the end of it. Cosmic Girl, the customised Boeing 747 jumbo jet from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Orbit, took off from Spaceport Cornwall at the airport in Newquay and cruised towards the south coast of Ireland for an hour before releasing LauncherOne, the huge 24-tonne rocket carrying a payload of nine satellites from seven civilian and defence customers. Spaceport Cornwall: First UK rocket launch ends in failure after ... (The Scotsman)

An attempt to make British space history by launching a rocket into orbit from UK soil has ended in failure after suffering an “anomaly” during the flight.

“We are family and we’ve been through a lot together. [Organisers](/topic/organisers) of the Start Me Up mission said the rocket – with a variety of civil and defence applications – failed to orbit. [In a series of tweets, Virgin Orbit ](https://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/virgin-orbit-secures-licences-for-uks-first-space-launch-ahead-of-scotland-3962351)said: “We appear to have an anomaly that has prevented us from reaching orbit. “We’ve seen that we can do it and we will look to do it again.” [35,000ft over the Atlantic Ocean](https://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/uks-first-spaceport-to-be-built-at-sutherland-after-overcoming-judicial-review-3354427) where it jettisoned the rocket containing nine small satellites towards space. To prepare Cosmic Girl for the launch the interior of the main deck was gutted of all seats and overhead bins to reduce the weight.
