Interestingly, however, Angers are thought to be a good bet to score themselves, as the PSG defensive unit struggles with injuries. He was not included in the matchday squad and will be given time to recover ahead of a match of much higher importance on Sunday against Stade Rennes. Nordi Mukiele down the right flank gets free vertically, and he delivers a low cross right to the feet of Hugo Ekitike. PSG hardly had a sniff of the attacking third, and in one of their first forays into the penalty area, they profit. Messi and Neymar stand over it, and after the official sorts out a mess in the scrum, it's Neymar who takes... Bernardoni is up to the task, going full stretch up and to his left to get his fingertips on the ball. The effort is just the fifth shot for PSG in the match, and there are some whistles from the PSG fans as they want to see more from their star-studded side. Neymar's free-kick delivery was sensational, right onto the head of Sergio Ramos, but the Spaniard's effort is right at the Angers goalkeeper, and he makes a wonderful reactionary save at point-blank range. 35th min: Lionel Messi is hacked to the ground by Batista Mendy, and it earns a dangerous free-kick from about 23 yards out. VAR has a look, and while Mukiele is onside on the initial ball, Messi is clearly off by just a hair (er, knee) on the return ball. Messi loops one vertically to Neymar breaking the defensive line, and the Brazilian produces a stunning bit of skill to turn 360 degrees and rifle it into the net on the volley. A wonderful buildup sees Nordi Mukiele played in by Messi, and then the Argentine gets the ball back on a wonderful one-two to get free.

Lionel Messi scores in first game since World Cup as PSG triumph (The Independent)

Messi netted in the second half of a 2-0 win over Angers that extended PSG's lead atop Ligue 1.

Lois Openda equalised in the 33rd with a powerful header but Lens were unable to add a third despite dominating, as Strasbourg keeper Matz Sels made several key saves after the break. In Strasbourg, Lens fell 2-1 behind after Alexis Claude-Maurice’s 11th-minute opener was cancelled out by Sanjin Prcic and Kevin Gameiro in the 13th and 16th minutes in a hectic start to the game. RC Lens stayed second but dropped two points in a 2-2 draw at struggling Racing Strasbourg with all the goals coming before the break.

Bernardoni kept Mukiele out with a brilliant stop at the death (90'), and it ended 2-0. The last time les Scoïstes got so much as a point from this fixture was back in December 2015, when they held Paris to a goalless draw at the Stade Raymond Kopa. Ramos then gave the ball away to Bentaleb, but Marquinhos got his fellow defender out of trouble with a block (54'). Ekitiké should have made it two at the other end inside the hour, but he miscontrolled Juan Bernat's cut-back before sending a tame shot into Bernardoni's gloves (58'). PSG, playing a 3-4-3, dominated possession, but they had a scare soon after when Gigio Donnarumma raced off his line and missed a speculative ball forward, but Juan Bernat was there to mop up the Italy No.1's mess (15'). Messi was back but Kylian Mbappé was rested with Hugo Ekitiké getting the nod up front in his stead, and the youngster wasted little time in getting his name on the scoresheet, steering Nordi Mukiele's low cross home for 1-0 with his third goal in as many games (5').

Lionel Messi, 7 – A triumphant return to action for the World Cup-winning captain, who orchestrated Ekitike’s opener before scoring one of his own. Successfully shut down any counter-attacks on his side of the defence. With Lens held to a draw by Strasbourg, it’s a result that puts the leaders seven points clear again – and more importantly, shows their Argentine star is still very much here to run the show, even in Kylian Mbappé’s absence.

A big night in store for the young Reds. Full time at Kirkby and Liverpool have beaten PSG 4-2 in the Premier League International Cup. Musialowski gets the game underway at a particularly busy Academy. It's looking like a good night for the young Reds so far, let's hope they keep it up! The Reds beat Dynamo Zagreb 2-0 in their opening encounter and now take on bottom-of-the-group PSG in Kirkby. PSG just about holding firm, for now. Three early chances so far; two for Jake Cain and one for James Norris. Koumetio’s first will surely be the club’s goal of the season. The hosts have been too strong from the first whistle. Horrible clash of heads between Lee Jonas and Dan-Patrice Bikouta. Koumetio - from much closer range this time - makes it three. What a comeback this is turning out to be!

PSG's unbeaten record this season had been ended in a 3-1 defeat away at Lens on New Year's Day, but they bounced back to win 3-1 at third-tier Chateauroux in the French Cup at the weekend without any of their superstar attacking trio. The win, which came three and a half weeks after he captained Argentina to their World Cup final triumph on penalties against France in Qatar, saw PSG move six points clear at the top of the French table. Messi had been rested for PSG's first three matches following the long break in the season caused by the World Cup but he returned to training in Paris a week ago and was back in the starting line-up for this game against Ligue 1's bottom side.

Paris Saint-Germain extended their lead at the top of Ligue 1 with a routine 2-0 win over Angers, with a goal for the returning Lionel Messi.

Neymar, in a slightly deeper role, hangs back and slides a lovely outside of the boot pass into the path of Messi down the left flank. It's been coming; the hosts have controlled the early exchanges, and after Neymar picked it up in the right half-space and fed Mukiele, Ekitike made his run to the near post, and finished clinically. Lionel Messi scored on his return to action for Paris Saint-Germain as the Argentine World Cup winner helped his team to a comfortable three points in their Ligue 1 encounter with Angers at the Parc des Princes. Paris, however, began to profit from the increased space opening up in the visiting half, as Neymar, Messi, Vitinha and Fabian were afforded more time on the ball. He finished with aplomb, but had a nervy two-minute wait as VAR checked the initial offside call. A slight miscommunication between Gianluigi Donnarumma and Juan Bernat had home fans momentarily worried, as both PSG players went for a ball played in behind the defence.
