Tár review – Cate Blanchett dazzles as monstrous maestro (The Guardian)

Todd Field's film echoes the slippery genius of its protagonist, a brilliant conductor-composer who toys with her admirers.

The crash and burn of hubristic ambition? A Shakespearean tragedy about a powerful individual driven to the brink of madness by the niggling attrition of guilt? She describes herself, in a rare, entirely insincere moment of self-deprecation, as “a U-haul lesbian”, but in fact she is one half of a Berlin Philharmonic power couple: her partner is the lead violinist, Sharon Goodnow (Nina Hoss).

Golden Globe winner Cate Blanchett, once again drew the audience's attention with a queer character, Lydia Tár in director Todd Field's Tár.

When we made Carol, there were so few films that were moving over into the mainstream that dealt with same-sex relationships and also picking it apart so it’s not a monolithic experience. What I love about the story that Todd wrote and the way he directed it and the way we approached it is their same-sex relationship just was. We had a lot of time to discuss their backstory in great detail and to make that manifest in what they did. We are flawed.'' Blanchett previously co-starred with Rooney Mara in Todd Haynes' Carol (2015), which won the Queer Palm award at the Cannes Film Festival. She is a strong contender for the 95th Academy Awards, which will be held on March 12, 2023.

A strange lichen transfers from the flower to her body, and she has visitations from the ghosts of miners, nuns, and children. She is reliant on a supply boat for food and fuel, and rough seas see her starting to run low on tea and petrol for the generator. Her job is to take daily readings on a rare flower growing on the clifftops. The material is overcooked and about as tawdry and low-brow as you could ask for, but together they just about drag it across the line. Lydia is a force of nature, and this extraordinary, exquisite film requires a singular, muscular talent to convey the indomitable power and magnitude of its central figure. The aforementioned public interview tells us everything we need to know: Lydia is the best of the best, a former protégé of Leonard Bernstein, and a living legend in her field. What is it, exactly, that Field is trying to say with Tár, and is it OK for us to come away with conflicting opinions? It’s a hell of a trip. Meanwhile, the conductor’s marriage to her concertmaster wife Sharon (Nina Hoss), has begun to sour, and it seems the maestro may have locked eyes on a new obsession. For his first film in 17 years, Field (In the Bedroom, Little Children) crafts a rich, textured story of tremendous confidence and clout. What if they exploited their power to get what they wanted, and what if they were an abuser? “I was offended as a conductor, I was offended as a lesbian.
