The costs of radio transmission are, of course, huge. Radio 3 is about to get a refit with the appointment of Sam Jackson as its new Controller, but the real power will lie with the BBC’s director of music, Lorna Clarke, once head of music at Radio 1, and then Radio 2, whose brief has now expanded to Radio 3 and who ranks higher than the network bosses. Because it can connect the listener to the past, as well as the present. Ken Bruce typifies the kind of radio voice that spans generations, as Terry Wogan did before him. Yet the BBC just doesn’t seem to value radio as much as it once did. If not, the BBC may crow a little.
