Piklopil was oblivious to Kampusch’s actions as he turned off the vacuum cleaner and fled, continuing the conversation without any indication of being bothered or concerned. In her formal statement following her escape, Kampusch claimed that she and Piklopil used to get up early every morning to share breakfast. She claimed that she had made vain attempts to stand out while out with Piklopil. She once made an attempt to flee by leaping out of a moving vehicle. On the morning of March 2, 1998, the 10-year-old Kampusch left her family’s home in Vienna’s Donaustadt neighborhood, but she never returned home or to school. Later, he brought her skiing for a few hours at a resort close to Vienna. Kampusch was imprisoned for several years without being able to escape the cramped area at night. The chamber was soundproof and had no windows. Her parents separated and divorced after she was abducted.
