Will All Quiet on the Western Front really conquer all at the Baftas? (The Guardian)

The German-language film has 14 nominations, and great resonance with the Ukraine war, but I suspect a good number of the gongs will go elsewhere.

[Living](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/jan/21/living-bill-night-kurosawa-ikiru-remake) (for which Bill Nighy has a best actor nod), while Charlotte Wells’s demanding and brilliant [Aftersun](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/nov/20/aftersun-review-charlotte-wells-luminous-father-daughter-drama-paul-mescal) probably deserved to have a best film and director nomination and Paul Mescal up for best actor. The wonderful Irish film [The Quiet Girl](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/may/11/the-quiet-girl-review-beauty-and-pain-in-rural-ireland) also might have achieved more recognition, though it might well win in the foreign language category and the adapted screenplay category. [Tár](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/jan/11/tar-review-cate-blanchett-is-perfect-lead-in-delirious-sensual-drama), about the autocratic orchestra conductor incomparably played by Cate Blanchett, which lags with five nominations – but surely Blanchett is a shoo-in for best actress. And Ke Huy Quan may well repeat his Globes success as the film’s best supporting actor nominee. It could well be because we are now all so grimly aware of the unquiet eastern front; the brutal and continuing war in Ukraine may have directed Bafta’s collective unconscious to this brutal subject. Good also to see Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan nominated for their supporting turns.
