Again, Murray's indomitable spirit shone through though - earning another break point before a wicked forehand forced the world No 159 to Four times Murray appeared dead and buried in the point, and was essentially doing shuttle runs across the court as he managed to return a forehand and then three successive smash shots. The three-time Slam winner complained that Kokkinakis was repeatedly swearing during his previous rant, and wasn't sanctioned despite his further warning for racket abuse. But after the Scot gave himself a chance of a break he could not afford to miss, the drama ramped up further. Down two sets, and trailing 2-0 in the third, Murray fashioned a break point and then showed off all his legendary resilience to convert it. @PenchesterUTD23 replied: "That's why he's one of the GOATS" while @andy_delpotro wrote: "Great point, great reaction!"

Andy Murray defeats Thanasi Kokkinakis at 4am in epic five-hour ... (The Independent)

In the longest match of his career, the 35-year-old completed the epic comeback at 4am in Melbourne.

In the biggest match of his life, Kokkinakis took an all-or-nothing approach from the start and produced a brilliant attacking game that displayed power and unerring accuracy in equal measure. Murray was furious at the end of the fourth set – not at how he was playing, but that the sport of tennis itself could get to the point where a match of such intensity and commitment was being played at such a time, forcing not only the players, but fans, ball kids, and tournament staff to endure late into the night as well. It was past 2am when the points began to fade into the blurry memory of a night already too long – and yet there would be a further two hours to come. Staggeringly, as the match entered into a fifth hour, Murray was contorting his weary body to retrieve shots that seemed unreachable, producing winners that were hit boldly and cleanly, as if from a fresh and rested mind. Murray played for four hours and 45 minutes as he defeated Matteo Berrettini on Tuesday, he reached five hours and 45 minutes here, as the match finished at 4am. An extraordinary battle from the brink, sparked from a miracle point early in the third set, was the just start of the long road back – by the end, he had never played for longer, or later.

Three more times he guessed correctly, finally getting one over his opponent’s head to see Kokkinakis fire the ball into the net. It swung one way and the other. But getting into the long rallies was not easy, Kokkinakis unfurling 20 forehand winners in the first two sets alone. It was at nearly 2am, surely this time the end. His mind has always been willing even when the flesh was weak. Kokkinakis was dominating the long exchanges, winning nine out of 11 rallies of more than nine shots in the first set, a statistic Murray himself would usually expect to win. In the fifth set, he was even more incredulous when Asderaki-Moore denied him one. He was even called for a time violation, something to which he rarely even gets close. There was no actual blood spilt of course, albeit against Berrettini he did take the skin off his knee and his forearm, although the most damage that had been done was internal. When it comes to the second fight scene, he cannot give his all. The dragons have been getting bigger and the battle scenes more expensive, but this is essentially the same film. [Andy Murray ](http://www.inews.co.uk/topic/andy-murray?ico=in-line_link)in his pomp always felt like a Hollywood movie.

Australian Open: Andy Murray defeats Thanasi Kokkinakis in five-set ... (Sky Sports)

Andy Murray followed up his first-round, five-set win against 13th seed Matteo Berrettini with another epic victory against an inspired Thanasi Kokkinakis ...

I don't really know who was in the right and who was in the wrong. If it was someone I didn't know so well, I'd be hoping he was getting fired up and a bit angry with the situation. "I don't really know what to make of what happened. If a ball comes out of your pocket, it's your own fault." I don't really know what to make of what happened. I didn't see any of what happened, because obviously the play was all in the other corner. So I was p****d, and I was even more p****d when she didn't tell me she made the mistake." I think it went on a bit too long, and it got cleared up, and then I did a good job of holding. Thanasi was serving unbelievably, hitting his forehand huge and I don't know how I managed to get through it. He did not hold back afterwards, saying: "It's a big mistake from the umpire. So I think this is not fair." You can do a huge mistake and nothing will happen to you.

He broke serve to lead 3-2, going on to take the first set and then looked in complete control when he forged ahead at 5-4 in the second. He clawed his way back into the set in typically gritty fashion, saving three set points in the next game, but was immediately on the back foot in the tie-break and could not recover.

Andy Murray recovered from two sets down to win 4-6, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-3, 7-5 against Thanasi Kokkinakis in the longest match of his career.

On Saturday, they will face each other again for a place in the fourth round. Murray’s performance on Rod Laver Arena had demonstrated that he can still play tennis of the highest level in a single contest, but as he returned to Melbourne Park it remained to be seen if, with his age and his physical state, he had the bandwidth to sufficiently recover in order to perform at the highest level once more. Minutes later, Murray drilled a backhand down-the-line winner to close off one of the greatest recoveries of his career. With the momentum at his back, Murray kept on moving, flitting through the fourth set to level the match. The home favourite served for the match at 5-3 in the third set, but Murray pulled him back again. It is the third latest finish in the history of tennis at tour level and the longest match of Murray’s 18-year career.

When Fitzgerald retorted that Murray 'has a big everything,' the third-round qualifier joked back: "I'm not sure my wife would agree with that!" However, Thursday's triumph was that much more special after the veteran came back from two sets down to topple one of the home favourites 4-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-3, 7-5. It was pivotal, coming moments after the Scot had turned to his box and say, “I haven’t got it in me”. When it finally came to the crunch, it looked like Kokkanakis in game seven of the final set when facing four break points. What he saw as an injustice seemed to derail him after admonishing the umpire. As had so often been the case, he dug himself out of a hole with his blistering serve. But at 35 and nine years older than his opponent, he edged out the pair’s marathon war of attrition 4-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 7-5. This time he went two sets behind.

Kokkinakis nonetheless served for the match at 5-3, but, within sight of the winning post, tightened up and was comfortably broken. Energy surges came intermittently for both players and, incredibly, some of the tennis was at its highest level early in the decider. This, remember, was the sequel to another extraordinary match on Tuesday, when Matteo Berrettini was edged out in a fifth set tiebreak. That was guaranteed before Murray sailed past his previous record of five hours and seven minutes, the Davis Cup epic against Juan Martin del Potro in 2016. He moved to 5-2 but came under threat when Kokkinakis got a fourth or fifth wind. The tournament was so sure of it that they got his peers lined up to pay tribute. Still Murray held him off and then created three break points of his own at 5-5, which were answered with big serves before a rare shanked forehand. Soon he was walking off, with a limp accompanying the subsiding of the adrenaline which had carried him through. Murray was left with just about enough energy to field a few jocular questions from the on-court interviewer, John Fitzgerald. 'I've got a big heart,' he said, in an early contender for the understatement of the year. Not far behind was coach Ivan Lendl, who has usually been around when Murray has performed his greatest deeds. Friday's order of play sees the likes of Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev all in action. It's not beneficial for the umpires, the officials. It's not good for the players. And the issue over scheduling was instantly raised as Andy Murray's iconic comeback against Thanasi Kokkinakis was played until past 4am in the morning. Play has often gone long into the night due to the sheer amount of matches all over Melbourne Park. I don't think it's amazing for the fans.

He was basically doing a walk-and-talk on the way out from where player services is, hustling the media to try and get them moving – maybe 10 to 15 mins max and then he was out of there." "He was lying in bed, thinking this is really not what I need – he was taking them right up until the end of the match not knowing how long it was going to be." "He's very deserving of a 12-hour sleep." As for his chances on Saturday against Roberto Bautista Agut – the man who almost ended his career, after their five-set first round here four years ago? "I just saw him there, he was just having food – I was surprised to see him," Jamie said. "Usually you'd go to the broadcast centre and it's a bit more of a serious thing in the press conference room. The sun was threatening to rise, but Murray did not waver from his regular post-match routine. "He said it was very tough for him to sleep at all because during a match you take all these types of supplements and energy drinks and gels to keep yourself going and a lot of them have caffeine in them," Robson, who spoke to Murray on Friday, said on Eurosport. He sat on a plastic chair while they all huddled close and some lunged to hover their dictaphones within earshot. The moment Murray exited the court after nearly six hours of gruelling competition, he had no time for pleasantries.
