St Johnstone vs Rangers - LIVE updates (Scottish Daily Record)

The Light Blues begin their defence of the trophy in Perth which will almost feel like a home game after controversial ticket call from Saints.

He does the referee and Rangers a favour by not going down. Whittaker reportedly wasn’t in the right “headspace” to play, but Martin offered little encouragement in terms of a deal with the Gers being done. His touch isn't great though and he has to check. Barisic gets it up and over the wall, but his accuracy is off and Remi Matthews is able to wave it past the post. Borna Barisic was first to react and rifled a first time finish into the roof of the net. For Rangers this time, in a dangerous position on the edge of the St Johnstone box. Double change for Rangers. The first 45 minutes is up and Rangers are a goal up at the break. That gives Considine the split second he needs to snuff out the danger and prevent a second goal. But the keeper watches it all the way and is aboe to get across and tip it wide. He manages to knock the ball past the keeper, but Drey Wright is in the right place at the right time to boot it off the line. He doesn;t quite get a clean contact on the ball, but it;s enugh to take it past McGregor and James Tavernier has to get back quickly to clear before the ball triclkles into the net.

Despite being reduced to nine men for 30 minutes of the game, Beale's substitutes worked fantastically as the Light Blues defended their lead in the simulation. But, in added time at the end of the first half, Rangers were reduced to 10 men after James Tavernier received his marching orders for what was judged a dangerous challenge on Adam Montgomery. One-on-one with the 'keeper, Morelos fired into the bottom corner to make it 3-2 and hand his side the lead. Without taking a touch, the Englishman curled a fantastic strike into the top corner to level the game. It was a deserved lead for Beale's side, but in the 40th minute, the Light Blues found themselves 2-1 down. But, just before the break, Rangers recovered as they found the equaliser through Ryan Kent. The Light Blues won the Scottish Cup last season, beating Hearts 2-0 in the final in extra time. But, the lead arrived moments later as the striker made up for his miss with an assist. Rangers land 'home' tie in Scottish Cup: boycotts, unhappy ... (The Scotsman)

A home tie is all Rangers could reasonably hope to have been handed at the start of their Scottish Cup defence.

“Obviously it's nice for us because for our players we can go there and know the crowd is going to be behind us and supporting us,” added Beale. Not involved at McDiarmid Park, nor anywhere for at least four weeks, will be striker Kemar Roofe, who injured a shoulder in the League Cup semi-final win over Aberdeen last weekend. [Callum Davidson](/topic/callum-davidson) has done his best to ease relations between the fanbase and the club but even so, the expectation is that tonight's match will be played in front of the smallest-ever home crowd at McDiarmid Park. St Johnstone have all but surrendered home advantage by giving three stands to Rangers fans and restricting home supporters to only the main stand. We have had some really difficult away games recently, obviously with the weather and changes in pitches and all that. As much as he has been almost faultless while re-igniting a Rangers side that had become moribund under Van Bronckhorst, this is the first time Beale has faced a situation where he can only mess up his predecessor’s good work.

The Scottish Cup holders are taking on St Johnstone in Perth against a backdrop of home fans anger.

Rangers have been hit with the news that Kemar Roofe is out for four weeks with a shoulder injury suffererd in last weekend's Viaplay Cup semi-final win over Aberdeen when he scored the winner. Saints have lost their last five games in a row and have conceded 14 goals but, of course, they beat [Rangers](https://www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/all-about/rangers-fc) 2-1 in Perth back in November - a result that hastened the end for Gio van Bronckhorst. Rangers go there on good form with new boss Michael Beale winning seven of his eight games in charge - the other being a 2-2 draw with Celtic. [St Johnstone ](https://www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/all-about/st-johnstone-fc)have infuriated their fans by trying to financially capitalise on the tie by giving up three stands to the visiting support and then asking season ticket holders to pay £30 for a seat in the main stand. Sign up to our daily sport newsletter [Callum Davidson](https://www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/all-about/callum-davidson) has pleaded with them to turn out and back his side and he could do with it.

Barisic almost set up Rangers' second goal in the 56th minute when he sent in a corner which was met by the head of fellow defender Connor Goldson, but Matthews made a fantastic save and the home side cleared to safety. Near the end of a dull first half, the Gers left-back fired in from 16 yards for his first goal in almost two seasons and it proved decisive for a 1-0 victory.
