Paul Mescal is the surprise golden boy of this year's Oscar ... (The Independent)

Everyone is rightly talking about the 'Aftersun' star's Best Actor nomination, but this year's Oscars are also defined by comeback stories and first-timers, ...

And then the comeback stories: The Whale’s Brendan Fraser; Everything Everywhere’s Ke Huy Quan, a child actor from The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Short Round!) whose career cruelly sputtered just as he hit adolescence. Inexplicable first-time nominees like Colin Farrell (Inisherin), Bill Nighy (Living), Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh (both of Everything Everywhere). Aftersun and Women Talking warranted wider showings – particularly Charlotte Wells and Sarah Polley in the ultimately all-male Best Director category – while the absence of Till’s Danielle Deadwyler in Best Actress and Top Gun: Maverick’s Tom Cruise in Best Actor is perplexing. Especially in a shock nod based on a few weeks of furious campaigning by her A-list pals. How did Angela Bassett become Marvel’s first ever Oscar nominee – for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – long after everyone gave up begging the Academy to recognise the MCU? That movie, Charlotte Wells’s haunting father-daughter drama Aftersun, has now earned him a Best Actor nod – a reward for the laser-focused thoughtfulness that has gone into his trajectory so far.

Who is Paul Mescal? The Oscar-nominated star of Aftersun (Manchester Evening News)

The Irish actor has earned a host of nominations this awards season for his performance in Charlotte Wells' acclaimed drama.

He will also join Fleabag star Andrew Scott and The Crown’s Claire Foy in British fantasy drama Strangers. In the play, Mescal stars as Stanley Kowalski, a role famously played by screen icon Marlon Brando. But it was the following year that would see Mescal star in the film that has defined his career so far. The film itself also picked up swathes of nominations and was voted British film magazine Sight and Sound’s best film of 2022. Over the next few years, he landed stage roles in his native Ireland in productions including The Red Shoes and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Mescal then made his feature debut in 2021, alongside Oscar winner Olivia Colman in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s psychological drama The Lost Daughter. Mescal’s performance in the 12-episode series earned him universal acclaim. The 26-year-old, from Maynooth, County Kildare, had enjoyed a relatively sharp trajectory over the past few years, having only made his feature debut in 2021. Joining these filmmaking veterans in the Oscar discourse is young Irish actor Paul Mescal. The year 2022 was a busy one for the young actor, having also starred as a man accused of sexual assault in the psychological drama God’s Creatures, and the male lead in a film adaptation of the opera Carmen. [Steven Spielberg](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/steven-spielberg), Colin Farrell and Jamie Lee Curtis are going up against a host of exciting new writers, directors, and actors in a bid for the prestigious trophy.
