The episode finished with him discovering that a kind of impromptu shrine had been erected in the boat’s wheelhouse, with a candle burning beside photos of his dead son and his old Navy mates. With its cuckoo-in-the-nest plot, The Catch was formulaic but elevated by a cast that included Brenda Fricker as Poppy’s grandmother Phyllis. An internet search duly revealed that Ryan had changed his name at 18, although Ryan came up with a plausible-sounding reason involving the deaths of his parents. He was immediately suspicious of Poppy’s new boyfriend, a handsome, self-assured and well-off “catch” called Ryan (Aneurin Barnard). The central question is whether the boyfriend (Aneurin Barnard) is a wrong ’un with sinister motives, or whether Watkins is misinterpreting everything because he is still tortured by grief over the death of his 10-year-old son, which has led him to be madly over-protective when it comes to his now-adult daughter. If someone turns to their partner and sighs: “I’ve never been so happy in my life!” they will be run over by a bus shortly afterwards.
