Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Like many of his team-mates, he has been tuning up in the SA20, with five matches for MI Cape Town taking eight wickets and bowling with good pace. Anrich Nortje, the standout quick at the SA20 with 13 dismissals for Pretoria Capitals, spearheads the bowling attack with Kagiso Rabada. [Harry Brook](https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/harry-brook-911707)continues on from a breakthrough 2022 with a 50-over debut, his cap presented to him by former Yorkshire teammate David Willey, who also plays.
A five-over spell is at least one more than I expected him to start with, but he looks in great shape. Ugly figures – 0-41 – but he bowled solidly, ...
He still has a lot of credit in the bank but it is 14 international innings since his last fifty while he has averaged 12.5 this month in the SA20. He starts at 87mph in the channel and Bavuma gets off the mark with a thick edge down to third man. We have to wait an over at least to see Archer, with David Willey takng the first. Willey's last ball is loose, short and wide and De Kock cracks a cut through Roy at point for four. Archer is given a fifth over and keeps his pace up in the high eighties. Archer pitches the next ball up and kicks the ground in exasperation when De Kock nails a straight drive for four. Curran has been grunting with the exertion of banging the ball in but it all pays off when he gets one to climb over De Kock's helmet and sucker him into a hook. Van der Dussen tries to heave one over midwicket but didn't pick that it was the googly and drags it off the inside edge. De Kock c Buttler b Curran 37 Bags him with the last ball of the over. He plays a more orthodox drive to the next off-break, pushing it for a single. He had more room to pull the previous delivery for two but that's Curran's skill, subtlety and guile there, giving him a seemingly similar opportunity but a little less room. But when Curran tries it again, it doesn't have as much propulsion off the pitch and Markram fetches it at shoulder height, rolling his wrists to swat it through midwicket for four.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bat first at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein at the start of a three-match series.
[Jofra Archer](https://www.outlookindia.com/topic/jofra-archer) was back in the England team for the first time in nearly two years for the first one-day international against South Africa on Friday. South Africa recalled seam bowler Sisanda Magala for his first ODI in a year. He was out with elbow and back injuries but has been playing in the South African domestic Twenty20 league to prove his fitness for the ODI series.

Over-by-over report: England begin their 50-over World Cup preparations in Bloemfontein with the first of a three-game series. Join our writers.
9th over: South Africa 65-1 (de Kock 22, van der Dussen 4) So that was an inspired bowling change from Buttler, who spurned both his back-up seamers (Curran and Stone) and his go-to spinner, Adil Rashid, and turned to his vice-captain Moeen. 3rd over: South Africa 18-0 (de Kock 10, Bavuma 8) Willey manages more swing but less accuracy, straying onto the pads repeatedly to give Bavuma two twos and a three. 15th over: South Africa 92-2 (van der Dussen 15, Markram 2) Moeen continues and concedes five singles. 18th over: South Africa 104-2 (van der Dussen 23, Markram 6) On paper this is Sam Curran’s worst over, going for a full four runs, but he nearly nabs another wicket in a way that is typical of his chutzpah. 22nd over: South Africa 117-3 (van der Dussen 27, Klaasen 1) Here’s Heinrich Klaasen, who’s been in form for Super Giants in the SA20. 19th over: South Africa 106-2 (van der Dussen 24, Markram 7) One seasoned spinner gives way to another as Adil Rashid takes over from his mate Mo. 26th over: South Africa 140-3 (van der Dussen 40, Klaasen 11) Stone’s extra velocity draws a false shot from Klaasen, but he gets away with it as his top-edged pull lands safely to the left of Harry Brook at deep square. 28th over: South Africa 151-3 (van der Dussen 43, Klaasen 19) Stone, playing the situation, pulls out a thrifty over when England need it: four dots, two singles. 38th over: South Africa 212-4 (van der Dussen 78, Miller 15) As the pendulum swings again, what’s a fielding captain to do? 31st over: South Africa 171-4 (van der Dussen 52, Miller 0) So Rashid, after seeing one sweep go for four, turns the next one into the breakthrough that England needed. 39th over: South Africa 218-4 (van der Dussen 83, Miller 16) It’s a double change as David Willey replaces Moeen and forms a leftie pincer movement with Curran. 40th over: South Africa 220-4 (van der Dussen 84, Miller 17) Another good over from Curran, just two from it.
Roy scored 113 off just 91 balls but South Africa ran out winners by 27 runs.
Moeen’s introduction in the ninth over redressed the balance as Bavuma carelessly clothed to mid-on for 36 while Curran used his variations wisely and a devilish bouncer surprised De Kock on 37. He cast off the shackles from an Archer free hit with a furious heave for six while the England bowler threw in a wide and another no-ball in a chastening penultimate over. Archer leaked 41 in his first five-over burst, struggling to find a consistent line and length with little movement on offer. Roy reached three figures by pulling Nortje for his 11th four, celebrating with a mighty swing of the bat, before clubbing Shamsi for a fourth six. Archer believes he is at “about 80 per cent” fitness so some rust was inevitable – and he conceded 20 runs in an ugly nine-ball over before his spell finished on a brighter note with Wayne Parnell’s wicket. Curran limited the damage to under 300 and prised out Van der Dussen for 111 and Miller for 53 to catches in the deep.
It had been 678 days since England had been able to call upon Jofra Archer and, so it felt, almost as long since they had seen the best of Jason Roy.
Aiden Markram tried to sneak an over of part-time off-spin at the end of the powerplay and was belted for six. Dropped from England’s T20 side ahead of last year’s World Cup triumph amid a prolonged lean spell, it was true that the 32-year-old’s ODI returns - including a century in the Netherlands in July - had offered slightly less cause for alarm. It is a measure of Curran’s standing now that, later, his dismissal felt like the moment English hopes disappeared. For Roy, the sense of immediate jeopardy was far greater. Roy’s 113 off 91 balls came in reply to another century from Rassie van der Dussen, but in being restricted to 298-for-seven, the Proteas appeared to have failed to take full advantage of a flat surface at Mangaung Oval. At 146 without loss and again at 196-for-three, the tourists looked well on top in the chase but a brilliantly hostile spell from Anrich Nortje turned the tide.
But the wicket of Moeen Ali four overs later began a collapse of six wickets for 49 runs in the face of fiery fast bowling. Anrich Nortje took 3-13 in a four- ...
"We should keep going after the good start with the bat, have conviction and commitment to our game. After a first spell of 0-41 from five overs, Archer returned later in the innings when the rust was more evident. England captain Jos Buttler: "Disappointed, I think we played some excellent cricket for the majority of that game. With Archer leaking runs, Curran was the pick of England's bowlers. It would be harsh to call his much-anticipated return a reality check. He powered England to 146-0 inside 20 overs and 196-3 in the 30th over before he was caught on the boundary for 113 from 91 balls.
While so much of the focus leading into this three-match series has been on Jofra Archer, this game was turned by a very different fast bowler.
“It was always going to be a challenge to get back to bowling ten overs in a game,” Buttler said. Three balls later, Archer sent down a wide full toss that was slashed for four by Miller and, to the bowler’s displeasure, it was called a waist-height no-ball. The pitch drew the sting from most of his short balls, but Temba Bavuma was slightly late on one bouncer and was lucky that his edged hook flew over third man for six. Before the game, after his stint in the SA20 competition, Archer had estimated that he was operating at about 80 per cent of capacity. But he has a smooth, repeatable action, a strong wrist and no little skill, and when he forced Malan to splice a pull to mid-off to end the opening stand, he sparked a flurry of three wickets in as many overs. After Roy had pulled Kagiso Rabada to deep square leg, Jos Buttler made a steadying 36, but he tickled Nortje behind and England were six down, still needing 65 to win.
Sports Mole previews Sunday's second one-day international between South Africa and England, which will be played at the Mangaung Oval.
[Jofra Archer](/people/jofra-archer/) made his long-awaited comeback from injury to feature in the first ODI, picking up one wicket from an expensive 10 overs that cost 81 runs, and having only returned to action, England may decide against playing him for the second time in three days. [Jos Buttler](/people/jos-buttler/) was the only other England player to score over 30, and the middle to lower order will need to come to the fore if the tourists are to level the series on Sunday. [England](/football/england/) will look to level the series when they face [South Africa](/football/south-africa/) on Sunday.
The visitors have lost their last four ODIs, and may need to tailor their approach to suit a tricky Bloemfontein surface.
The resolve the guys showed today - there's been a lot happening over the last two weeks with the SA20 - the way the guys came out and refocused on what we want to achieve this week is unbelievable." Any changes to England's line-up will depend on the health of Phil Salt, who sat out the series-opener with the illness that has also kept him out of the SA20. They have played each other five times at the venue, England have won three, South Africa one, and one match has been tied. While South Africa are not short of options in the seam-bowling department, he adds to the variety of the attack and could use the rest of the series to push for a more permanent white-ball place. Although their bowlers won them the first ODI, South Africa may consider some changes in the attack. Sisanda Magala put in his best performance in national colours on Friday, when he broke the opening stand that threatened to turn the match into a one-sided contest in England's favour and then took two more wickets to give South Africa an advantage. With both teams figuring out their batting and boasting strong attacks, the Bloemfontein crowd are in for a treat and word is that many more of them are expected for Sunday's match. Like Magala, Curran's use of the short and slower ball was a surprise factor for the batters and he dismissed all three of South Africa's main threats: Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller. Temba Bavuma's move to the opening berth will likely keep Janneman Malan and Reeza Hendricks on the bench for now. Even when they looked 50 runs short with the bat after England stormed to 146 without loss inside 20 overs in a chase of 299, South Africa's bowlers won them the game. The result asked familiar questions of South Africa: how wide is the gulf between their batters and bowlers? Though they will have to beat Netherlands 2-0 and hope other results go their way, Friday's win has allowed them to keep their fate in their own hands.
