From the 30th to the 31st of January, it headed near the star Polaris constellation. Another thing that makes the comet special is its green glow, thought to have come from an interaction between light from the sun and diatomic carbon. The distance from the Sun to the Oort Cloud is so enormous that it’s not even described in the units of miles or kilometres, but in astronomical units.

Green comet 2023 – live: How best to see 'awesome' E3 in sky ... (The Independent)

C/2022 E3 (ZTF) comet is visible with the naked eye from certain locations on Tuesday night.

For a few weeks it will also be possible to see it using binoculars or a telescope. The comet made its closest approach to Earth in the early hours of 1 February, 2023. “On March 2nd, all we knew was that we had found a moving object. The green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) making its closest pass by Earth today originated from the Oort Cloud, a cosmic shell of debris encircling the farthest reaches of the Solar System. The early hours of 1 February will see Comet ZTF reach its perigee, meaning it is at its closest point to Earth, but it will still be visible with the naked eye for the next few days in case you don’t get a chance to see it tonight. At its perigee on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, the green comet had a brightness value of the magnitude of about +4.7, meaning it was possible to see it with the naked eye.

Newly discovered green comet comes close to Earth (BBC News)

A newly discovered comet will make its closest approach to our planet on Wednesday. Astronomers say the object's journey toward us took around 50,000 years.

But those expecting a brilliant streak of emerald in the sky will be disappointed. Comets are mostly composed of ice and dust. At that time the comet should appear just to the right of the pole star.

Easiest to see will be the brighter head of the comet, but, if you are lucky, you may spot one of its two tails sweeping out from it, each made of material being jettisoned from its rapidly warming icy surface.” However, it still may be a good idea to grab some equipment to help. Dr Greg Brown, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, told said: “Long-period comet C/2022 E3 is currently speeding through the solar system and won’t return for at least 50,000 years, assuming it ever does, so it’s your once-in-a-lifetime chance to see it. It will fly within 45 million kilometres close to the earth. The comet, known as C/2022 E3 (ZTF) was last seen from earth roughly 50,000 years ago. In some cases, you may be able to spot the comet with the naked eye - especially if you're in an area with little to no light pollution.

Green-hued comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is visible with binoculars, telescopes – and in some areas, the naked eye.

“In the comet business, you just wait for the next one because there are dozens of these,” Chodas said. This deep-freeze haven for comets is believed to stretch more than one-quarter of the way to the next star. While comet ZTF originated in our solar system, we can’t be sure it will stay there, NASA’s Chodas said. By February 10, it will be near Mars, a good landmark. A green-hued comet is expected to be the most visible to stargazers on Wednesday as it shoots past Earth and the sun for the first time This harmless comet already is visible in a clear northern night sky with binoculars and small telescopes, and possibly the naked eye in the darkest corners of the Northern Hemisphere.

The comet will move south and reach the head of the Orion constellation. When ultraviolet light from the sun excites the diatomic carbon, it gives off light, creating a green coma (nebulous halo) around the comet’s nucleus. C/2022 E3 is not as frequent a visitor as others of its kind — think Halley's Comet that appears every 76 years. The ‘green comet,’ officially designated C/2022 E3, will be at its closest proximity to Earth on Wednesday and Thursday after reportedly having last been in the vicinity of our planet 50,000 years ago. It forms on the head of the comet when sunlight breaks down larger carbon substances.

Stunning Green Comet Will Be Closest to Earth Today, at Peak ... (ScienceAlert)

A green comet called C/2022 E3 (ZTF), or Comet ZTF for short, is nearing its closest approach to Earth for the first time since the ice age.

The reason why it's so difficult to study this phenomenon on Earth is because C2 is so unstable. But the Universe likes order, so the molecule will do everything it can to return to its neutral state. But it was only in 2021 that a team, led by Schmidt, A comet is essentially a galactic snowball – it's a body made of ice and dust. [press release accompanying the findings](https://newsroom.unsw.edu.au/news/science-tech/comets-heads-can-be-green-never-their-tails-after-90-years-we-finally-know-why) published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2021. What that means is that the molecule can absorb some of the light from the sun, in the form of a photon, to put it in an excited state.

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will be visible for the first time in 50000 years. Astronomer Dr Darren Baskill explains how and when to see it.

Thomas has a Masters degree (distinction) in Magazine Journalism from the University of Sheffield and has written for Men’s Health, Vice and Radio Times. “It will be quite low in the sky – about 34 degrees high, fairly close to the horizon in the north,” says Baskill. Comet E3 has a brightness magnitude of +6, which means it should technically be visible to the human eye. That’s because even if you went in the middle of a country park away from the light pollution of the city, the moonlight would still be the biggest visibility problem.” “It may be better to try and see the comet this weekend instead,” says Baskill. Writing about everything from cosmology to anthropology, he specialises in astronomy and the latest psychology, health and neuroscience discoveries. He previously lectured at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, where he also initiated the annual Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. Also working in academia, Thomas has lectured on the topic of journalism to undergraduate and postgraduates at The University of Sheffield. Although the comet was nearest to our planet yesterday evening, passing within 42 million kilometres, it will still be visible in the northern hemisphere tonight. He adds: “The Moon is in its waxing gibbous phase at the moment, thus very bright. In a damp climate, there’s always a bit of haze that reflects moonlight and drowns out the view of faint objects.” This depends on when you’re looking.

The green comet is currently making its closest path of Earth in 50,000 years. The C2 breaks down into C atoms in a few days. “The green colour comes from C2, which is itself a breakdown product of larger molecules in the snowball. One picture, from the New Scientist’s Abby Beall, was notable not for its spectacular nature but for its help in seeing the comet. The C/2022 E3 (ZTF) comet makes its closest approach to Earth on 1 February, 2023. Diatomic carbon (C2) is a green, gaseous chemical with the formula C=C and is known to occur in the carbon vapour in comets. “In that sense, this comet is carrying a piece of us – of all humanity – into the cosmos,” he said. The green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) was found in March 2022 by astronomers from the Zwicky Transient Facility. The 1986 visit by the famous Halley’s comet had a magnitude of about +2 while its next pass expected in July 2061 is estimated to likely have a fairly spectacular brightness of about –0.3. The brightness of objects in the sky is measured on a scale of apparent magnitude by astronomers. Its brightness has been estimated to be at a magnitude of about +6 – almost the threshold of what can be visible to the naked eye – and is also expected to be the brightest such space rock to zoom past Earth this year. The green comet ZTF is currently at its closest position relative to the Earth, zooming past the planet at about 57km/s at a distance of merely 26 million miles.
