Petrol prices are back on the rise, according to the AA (This is Money)

Drivers are being hit by rising fuel prices after an increase in oil costs, the AA has warned today. Advertisement. The average price of a litre of petrol ...

In 2019, the UK consumed 16.851bn litres of petrol but last year got through 16.116bn litres. Diesel, which had cost 66.4p at around the same time last month, reached 71.9p a litre on Friday. This is almost 29p lower than the record of 199.1p seen last July. The RAC's Simon Williams added: 'We urge the Government to focus on ensuring retailers quickly pass on savings to drivers every time there is significant downward movement in the wholesale price of fuel – not just to ensure drivers aren't treated unfairly, but also because there is clear correlation between high fuel prices and higher levels of inflation.' Simon Williams said the analysis found 'absolutely no justification for pump prices to rise' in the coming days based on the current wholesale cost of fuel. [RAC study calculated that motorists were being ripped off at the pumps last year](/money/cars/article-11691749/Petrol-retailers-pocketing-extra-5p-litre-profit-drivers.html) by retailers refusing to pass on the full extent of wholesale fuel cost savings and pocketed an extra 5p in profit from every litre of petrol sold. The RAC claimed the gradual price reductions seen across UK forecourts in recent months have now 'ground to a halt' as a result of wholesale costs starting to rise last week. While fuel prices have been dropping over the last few months, both the AA and RAC have said that retailers have not been passing on wholesale savings to Britain's drivers quickly enough. RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said that the slight rise in the average price of petrol this week 'has been caused by smaller retailers passing on increased costs when they’ve bought in new supply' in the latter part of the month. The AA says the average UK price of a litre of unleaded on Monday was 0.4p higher than it was a week earlier The forecourt rises come after an $8-to-$10 increase in the cost of oil this month, which has pushed the wholesale price of petrol and diesel higher. It comes after the RAC reported that UK retailers pocketed additional profits of 5p on every litre of fuel sold in 2022 and claimed there is 'absolutely no justification for pump prices to rise' in the coming days despite recent wholesale increases.

A report by competition watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority published in December said drivers were the victim of "rocket and feather" pricing - when pump prices quickly reflect rising wholesale costs but are slow to fall when costs drop - in 2022. The RAC warned that retailers, as well as major supermarkets, have failed to reflect the fall in wholesale prices at the pump.

Looking at current wholesale costs there is absolutely no justification for pump prices to rise. The question now is whether retailers start to bump up their prices. It is the same story with petrol, which saw wholesale prices drop by 23p while prices at the pumps only fell by 18p.

The question now is whether retailers start to bump up their prices. Looking at current wholesale costs there is absolutely no justification for pump prices to rise. Petrol and diesel prices across the UK are on the rise again following a jump in price of the cost of oil in January, according to new AA data.

[Diesel](/latest/diesel) averaged 170.36p a litre yesterday, having fallen to 170.29p a litre on Wednesday and Thursday of last week. The resulting increase fuelled rises in the wholesale cost of road fuel. The HMRC also released official fuel consumption statistics today. “So far, pump price averages have risen only slightly. Mr Bosdet continued, saying: “A 13p increase in wholesale petrol costs, if sustained, would propel the average petrol price to below the 167.0p a litre average on the day of the fuel duty cut – but only because of the 5p cut (6p with VAT). If the move was to go through then the current rate of fuel duty – cut from 57.95p per litre to 52.95p per litre in March 2022 – would rise to about 65p. Petrol had bottomed out at 49.2p a litre in December but stood at 62.7p at the end of last week. He added: “After a fall of close to 43p a litre since the summer record, drivers feared that a rebound in petrol prices would eventually happen.
