Beyoncé leads with nine nominations for her album Renaissance, tying her for most all-time nominations with her husband, Jay Z – but will she show up?

A controversial pre-telecast award: Dave Chappelle wins best comedy album for his special The Closer, which drew criticism for being transphobic. “It has just been such a journey,” she said in accepting the award. Bad Bunny has kicked off the show with a rousing Spanish-language performance that has brought dozens of dancers to the stage, cast in red and orange lighting. Styles described making Harry’s House with two of his best friends as “the greatest experience of my life” and playing it for people “the greatest joy I could’ve asked for.” More interesting: the camera cut to Taylor Swift for a reaction shot, which feels rude. Another new bit for this year: a fan focus group for the album of the year award. “Beyoncé is on her way,” Noah reassures when she does not take the stage to accept her 31st Grammy award, tying the record for all-time wins.

Records were broken, EGOTs were achieved and Adele has gone viral for her facial expressions once again. Here's what went down at the star-studded ceremony.

This is Beyonce’s third studio album in a row (Beyonce, Lemonade, Renaissance) to be nominated for AOTY yet fail to bag the award, with the singer having lost out to Beck and [Adele](https://www.standard.co.uk/topic/adele) in previous years. The actress became one of the select few to hold all four major entertainment awards (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) when she won the Best Spoken World Album award for the audio version of her autobiography, Finding Me. It was a good night for Styles, though, who rocked up in one of his internet-breaking jumpsuits from the As It Was music video, to much thirst and appreciation. There was no postponed start date, no Zoom acceptance speeches, no fears of [BTS](https://www.standard.co.uk/topic/bts) members being too ill with [Covid](https://www.standard.co.uk/tech/what-is-growing-covid19-variant-orthrus-b1054242.html) to perform — and no plastic dividers in sight. Sam Smith arrived in a puffy red cape dress, complete with a cane, lace eye covering and top hat, just in case anyone wanted to make any more comments about Taylor Swift stayed true to her track Bejewelled in a starry blue two-piece made by Roberto Cavalli and J-Lo also went diamanté with her ruffled Gucci look. These included Adele’s multitude of facial expressions as she struggled to understand the host’s introduction of SZA. Beyonce turned heads in a thigh-split silver and champagne Gucci gown, while Adele also got her frill on in a red velvet Louis Vuitton look. “I just EGOT!” Davis joked as she accepted her award: “I wrote this book to honour the six-year-old Viola. I think, like on nights like tonight — it’s obviously so important for us to remember that there is no such thing as best in music.” [Grammy Awards](https://www.standard.co.uk/topic/grammys) proved that awards ceremonies are back in full swing with all the bells and whistles — and none of the Covid restrictions. 'Beyoncé pioneers, Harry Styles imitates': Why the Grammys got ... (The Independent)

We were expecting a Beyoncé vs Adele rematch, but Harry Styles' surprise win showed a deep lack of imagination at the 2023 Grammys, writes Mark Beaumont.

In terms of the fundamental visions involved, they’re in different leagues: Beyoncé pioneers, Styles imitates. The Grammys have a grand total of 91 award categories across a vast array of genres, but most are presented during an unscreened Premiere Ceremony before the main show like one relentless, 90-minute howl of “diverse enough for you, Twitter!?”. So the 2024 Beyoncé Knowles-Carter Robbed Again Award goes to.… Already, Styles had delivered the most lacklustre performance of the night, first spotted wandering about on a revolving stage full of dancers – well, more like loiterers really – before his rendition of “As It Was” was upstaged by his own sparkly yeti outfit. When these two superpowers of female fortitude and redemption last clashed in 2017, the Brit singer swept the board – and expressed her dismay in her [Album of the Year](/topic/album-of-the-year) acceptance speech. It was the second time running that Beyoncé had been robbed of the AOTY gong, having lost out to Beck in 2015.

The queen of pop broke records – though not for the big gongs, again. But if the Recording Academy has a history of unexpected choices, this year's wins for ...

[Harry Styles](https://www.theguardian.com/music/harry-styles)’s Harry’s House beating Renaissance to album of the year doesn’t feel the same as Beck’s Morning Phase triumphing over [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/dec/13/beyonce-album-first-review) in 2015, nor does it feel the same as if, say, Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres had won this year. [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/beyonce) has only ever won one of them once – song of the year in 2010 for Single Ladies – which seems a fairly inexplicable state of affairs: you don’t need to be a rabid member of the Bey Hive to know that she’s had an immense cultural and commercial impact over the last 20 years. Under the circumstances, Samara Joy – a hugely gifted jazz vocalist, gradually emerging as a significant songwriter as well as an adept interpreter of standards – feels like a worthwhile choice: rooted in tradition, but too soulful to qualify as easy listening. The weirdest success was Bonnie Raitt’s [Just Like That](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skd0XR3twCA) winning song of the year, at least from the perspective of the UK, where the album it’s from didn’t even make the charts. Certainly they’re one of the biggest-selling groups in a field where several of the nominees didn’t even seem particularly new: Molly Tuttle’s first album came out in 2006; Tobe Nwigwe’s first EP six years ago; Muni Long is 34 and released her debut album, albeit under her real name, Priscilla Renea, in 2009. Without wishing to cast shade on those doughtily toiling away in the areas covered by the best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media and best new age ambient or chant album categories, the Grammys are ultimately about four awards: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.

Harry Styles' Grammy wins didn't go unnoticed by former bandmates (Key 103)

Harry Styles' Grammy wins didn't go unnoticed by One Direction bandmates. Liam Payne and Niall Horan both congratulated the singer on his big wins.

In October 2020, Harry released the video for the fifth single from his second album, 'Golden', which shows the star running around the Amalfi Coast in Italy wearing some of the quirky outfits the star is known for. Harry has kicked off 2021 in style by releasing the video to up-beat toe-tapper 'Treat People with Kindness' which shows himself and Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge dancing in a very stylish old-school video. In May 2020, the star released the video fans had been waiting for, 'Watermelon Sugar', which is a super sexy video showing the star and some beautiful women on a beach eating A LOT of watermelons. Harry also released a documentary about the making of his album in 2017. 'Lights Up' was the first single to be released from Harry's second album 'Fine Line' and debuted at Number 3 in the UK, followed by 'Adore You' with an extended video showing his creative and quirky side. The success continued for Harry as he made his feature film acting debut in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, where he played a British soldier named Alex. In 2015, Zayn announced he was leaving the band and Harry, Niall, Louis and Liam made the decision to carry on as a four-piece. Harry couldn't believe it when he was announced as the winner of Album of the Year at the Grammys. Harry auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor as a solo artist, singing a version of Steve Wonder's 'Isn't She Lovely'. Harry and the 1D boys released four albums as a five-piece - 'Up All Night', 'Take Me Home', 'Midnight Memories' and 'Four'. It was billed as the shock of the Grammys 2023: Harry Styles took home Album of the Year instead of Beyoncé. But should we be surprised?

This is the fourth Beyoncé album to be snubbed for album of the year at the Grammys, each time she’s been beaten by a white artist: Taylor Swift, Adele, Beck and now Harry Styles. In 66 years of the Grammys, only 15 Black artists have won Album of the Year, ostensibly the top prize at the awards. Black artists are allowed to do well in the R&B, Rap and Reggae categories, maybe sometimes in the pop and vocal performance categories, but the biggest awards seem ring-fenced. Thank you!” He seemed honestly moved and appreciative, and sincerely complimented the rest of the records in his category. He is the absolute prototype for the sort of person this happens to. “This doesn’t happen to people like me very often,” Harry Styles said accepting the Album of the Year award at this year’s Grammys for his excellent Harry’s House.

The problem with Harry Styles' car-crash Album of the Year Grammy ... (Evening Standard)

The musician has been accused of “white privilege” for saying “this doesn't happen to people like me very often” when, actually, it does.

“’A black woman hasn’t won in over 20 years and a Hip Hop artist hasn’t won in 19 years. “Harry styles said ‘this doesn’t happen to people like me very often’ and I gotta be honest I can’t think of a type of people this happens for more,” one person tweeted, referencing the fact that a Black woman hadn’t won the award since Lauryn Hill in 1999, while Styles was the 33rd white man to accept the honour. In his defence, he’s opening remark: “Well, shit”, insinuates his mutual surprise. In fact, militant Beyoncé fans could even be heard booing as the performer took to the stage. In the 65 shows since, artists such as Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Taylor Swift have each won the coveted award three times — yet there’s always been one glaring snub. However one category is without a doubt the most prestigious of them all.
