Fantasy Premier League: Is it time to invest in Liverpool assets again? (The Athletic)

After a poor season so far for Liverpool, might their assets start to be the difference-makers over the coming weeks in FPL?

Aside from Liverpool’s two fixtures in Gameweek 25, another reason to go for Salah and Nunez is that they are both owned by relatively few FPL managers, so it’s a good time to get ahead of the curve. The Uruguayan may not be the most clinical, but he is a player who arrives in great goal-scoring positions, reflected in his high xG. If Liverpool start to score goals more freely again, it’ll likely be Salah or Nunez involved. And with Van Dijk and [Ibrahima Konate](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ibrahima-konate-vi83z5XUFDUq6gFF/) (£4.8m) out injured, there is little confidence that Liverpool’s defence will improve soon. Although this may lead us to believe that Nunez is a bad finisher, his career stats tell us differently. He has also created 38 chances with an xA (expected assists) of 3.1. He will be worth buying again — at the right time. He has seven goals and five assists this season, with the highest xG (9.17) among midfielders (which is what FPL classes him as). Things are likely to improve in this regard with the return of injured players such as In attack, last season Liverpool had already scored 52 goals by this point, with an xG of 50.38. They have conceded 28 goals with an expected goals conceded (xGC) of 29.2. After the same number of games last season, they had conceded 18 goals, with an xGC of 19.72.

He has also created 38 chances with an xA (expected assists) of 3.1. Looking at their games from now until Gameweek 28, they have some plum matches (seen below), with Newcastle United and Manchester United the toughest fixtures in that period. The Uruguayan may not be the most clinical, but he is a player who arrives in great goal-scoring positions, reflected in his high xG. He has seven goals and five assists this season, with the highest xG (9.17) among midfielders (which is what FPL classes him as). The Premier League said in a statement: 'In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club to a Commission.' Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal in particular are pushing hard for the Premier League to punish Manchester City after their alleged breaches. Financial Fair Play regulations will no doubt be on the agenda at the quarterly shareholder meeting, which was originally scheduled for the end of this week, with the Premier League anticipating a years-long battle with the Manchester club.

Fun fact: Haaland’s ownership actually fell just before GW21 - the first time it ever has in FPL - and he responded by netting a hat-trick. But, his style of cutting into the midfield could catch Riyad Mahrez napping against City and cause Brentford issues. Worth a punt as a likely player to start against both old club Villa and then Arsenal.

That result will have caught the eye of FPL managers as they look to pluck out differentials and as Everton travel to Anfield for the Merseyside Derby, points could be on the cards. The winner of the Arsenal v City game doesn’t really matter for FPL managers. Mikel Arterta’s side lost last time out to a newly-inspired Everton, while City slipped up at Tottenham to leave FPL managers short of points. But the double gameweek belongs to the top two, Arsenal and Manchester City. After Manchester United and Leeds United played out a thriller in midweek that nobody outside of Old Trafford was able to watch in the UK, Premier League football returns again on Saturday. West Ham host Chelsea in the early kick off while there is also the small matter of Arsenal v Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Fantasy Premier League: Four of the best captains for GW23 (The Football Faithful)

Erling Haaland vs Aston Villa (H) and Arsenal (A). It's a difficult to look past Erling Haaland for the captaincy this weekend, even given the furore that ...

The 29-year-old is enjoying a superb season and has now scored 17 goals in 22 league games, already matching his tally from the 2021/22 campaign. The England captain has scored a staggering 18 goals in 15 Premier League appearances against Leicester, including two hat-tricks. United lead the Premier League for counter-attack goals (6) this season, while only four clubs have conceded more on the break than Leeds. Saka has provided an attacking return in each of his three previous appearances against Brentford, while he scored as Arsenal hosted Manchester City last season. Back-to-back wins for Mikel Arteta’s side will put them in complete control, as the Gunners hunt down a first Premier League crown since the Invincibles paraded around the Highbury pitch in 2003/04. His share of set-pieces – including penalties – and proven track-record against Gameweek 23’s opposition will make the winger a popular pick. Rashford is red-hot right now and will be confident of continuing his streak at Leeds this weekend. Haaland has blanked in successive games on just one occasion this season and followed that with four goals in two games, including a hat-trick against Wolves last month. Haaland has, however, scored at a frightening rate this season. The title-chasing duo must first navigate games with Brentford and Aston Villa, respectively. A Brentford side unbeaten at nine cross the capital at the weekend, before Arsenal host Manchester City in a game which will have huge ramifications on the title race. [Arsenal](https://thefootballfaithful.com/tag/arsenal/) and Manchester City meet each other in a huge clash at the Emirates in midweek.

An Arsenal headache? Fantasy football tips (BBC Sport)

BBC Radio 5 Live's Alistair Bruce-Ball considers an Arsenal-themed switch as he looks at the options for fantasy football players.

This weekend, Arsenal host Brentford before that and City are at home to Aston Villa - so I'm sticking with Erling Haaland as my captain over those two games but Odegaard, Saka and Nketiah all have very strong claims for the armband. His headed winner, clean sheet and three bonus points against the Gunners last weekend earned his owners a total of 15 points and he's clearly going to continue to be a threat at the attacking set-pieces. And if you want to hear about a totally different way to manage an Fantasy Premier League squad, then have a listen to this week's Fantasy 606 podcast. However, White has serious competition for his place in Takehiro Tomiyasu, whereas Gabriel is always going to be one of the first names on the teamsheet. As for the other Gabriel - Mr Martinelli - he only got 59 minutes in that defeat at Everton before being replaced by Leandro Trossard. The reason for that is that Arsenal have been handed another double gameweek.

FPL Double Gameweek 23 differentials: Badiashile, Maddison + ... (Fantasy Football Scout)

Double Gameweek 23 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is fast approaching, so it's time to have a look at some more differential options.

Up first for Wolves is Southampton, who lost 3-0 at Brentford last time out, a result which leaves them bottom of the division. We are more of a family and we are giving all for our team-mates, and this is very important because we are showing character, and we like this.” – Jose Sa In fact, they have conceded only six goals from Gameweek 17 onwards, the same number as Arsenal, whilst keeping two clean sheets. Now, you’d expect them to kick on and provide real Fantasy value for the remainder of the season. Their underlying defensive stats in the last six matches continue to improve, too, as they sit sixth for minutes per expected goals conceded (xGC). The immediate fixtures for Leicester admittedly aren’t that appealing, but Maddison has scored in his last two meetings with Spurs. Despite sometimes being used in an inverted midfield role from the right this season, Maddison is averaging 0.61 goals per 90 minutes, an impressive tally that is only beaten by six players who you’d deem regular starters (500+ minutes). Chelsea added eight players to their ranks last month, but, per UEFA rules, could only register three of these signings (Mykhailo Mudryk, Joao Felix and Enzo Fernandez) in their Champions League squad for the knockout stages, with Badiashile missing out. You can then bench him against Spurs and Newcastle, which needn’t be an issue given his £4.3m price tag. In Gameweek 22, Fulham attacked whenever opportunities presented themselves but were repeatedly left frustrated by the host’s defensive organisation. We are more like warriors and we are looking for each other. However, he would also come short, with Brendan Rodgers’ attacking 4-4-2 formation morphing into a 4-3-3.

Fantasy Premier League: Solving bench dilemmas for Double ... (The Athletic)

We arrive at Double Gameweek 23 with a headache over who to bench, with fringe players having the favourable fixtures.

[Harry Kane](https://theathletic.com/football/player/harry-kane-47vQtg5y5Ub8iFqb/) (£11.7m) joined the [Premier League](https://theathletic.com/football/premier-league/)’s elite goalscorers with his 200th goal against Manchester City at the weekend and [Tottenham](https://theathletic.com/football/team/tottenham-hotspur/) play his favourite opponents, Leicester City, on Saturday. A home game against [Nottingham Forest](https://theathletic.com/football/team/nottingham-forest/) carries high appeal, with his two goals and seven assists this season, although Fulham have failed to score in their last three league fixtures. [Bruno Fernandes](https://theathletic.com/football/player/bruno-fernandes-qr6VV7sJwbrbqULf/) (£9.9m) and [Marcus Rashford](https://theathletic.com/football/player/marcus-rashford-xgQlXcNj79jwXiD4/) (£7.2m) have each returned in five consecutive gameweeks and Fernandes now being on their penalties is important to note. [Kieran Trippier](https://theathletic.com/football/player/kieran-trippier-BrjARZjGyouR7oDx/) (£6.1m) should be a lock in our starting line-up given his ownership, attacking potential and ability to amass bonus points. It becomes particularly troublesome to bench attacking players who are their team’s penalty taker, but Fulham’s Mitrovic has a poor record from the spot recently. [Brentford](https://theathletic.com/football/team/brentford/)’s [Ivan Toney](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ivan-toney-VfYkRN3FErfXXTZN/) and [Ollie Watkins](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ollie-watkins-9nwANNnY4TGed61H/) of [Aston Villa](https://theathletic.com/football/team/aston-villa/) moves them even further down the priority list for a start this weekend, particularly with those games coming away from home. You should also opt to play your other Newcastle defensive assets over those from [Manchester United](https://theathletic.com/football/team/manchester-united/) — Erik ten Hag’s men are on a good run of defensive form, but [Casemiro](https://theathletic.com/football/player/casemiro-wQ6Q8xViV8kqizDc/) will be a huge miss after picking up a three-match suspension with his red card last weekend. We will get such instances in gameweeks 29, 34 and 37. [Chelsea](https://theathletic.com/football/team/chelsea/) and [Brighton](https://theathletic.com/football/team/brighton-and-hove-albion/) defences narrowly over Manchester United’s, with [Reece James](https://theathletic.com/football/player/reece-james-GKa1YfGdueMrjfBr/) (£5.7m) providing an interesting route back into Chelsea’s defence. Price should reflect quality in FPL, after all. [Leicester](https://theathletic.com/football/team/leicester-city/)’s struggling [Danny Ward](https://theathletic.com/football/player/danny-ward-WajkB4rCCNiRZcEu/). [Arsenal](https://theathletic.com/football/team/arsenal/) and [Manchester City](https://theathletic.com/football/team/manchester-city/) — which other five get the nod?

Who is the best captain for Double Gameweek 23? (Fantasy Football Scout)

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers brace themselves, once again, as reigning champions Manchester City and plucky title challengers Arsenal face off ...

Manchester City’s immediate opponents Aston Villa are revitalised under the new stewardship of Unai Emery. Villa place in the bottom two over the last six matches for big chances conceded (20) and non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC, 9.88). Over the last six matches, Arteta’s troops rank third-best for shots inside the box conceded (39) but sit around mid-table for big chances conceded (11) and shots on target against (25). The Norwegian places in the top four for big chances received (10) and expected goals (xG, 3.94) over that same period. De Bruyne’s 19 chances created, six big chances supplied, and 15 successful crosses all play in the division’s top three over the last six matches – which suggests that returns will come for City’s underperformer.
