Fantasy Premier League: Is it time to invest in Liverpool assets again? (The Athletic)

After a poor season so far for Liverpool, might their assets start to be the difference-makers over the coming weeks in FPL?

Aside from Liverpool’s two fixtures in Gameweek 25, another reason to go for Salah and Nunez is that they are both owned by relatively few FPL managers, so it’s a good time to get ahead of the curve. The Uruguayan may not be the most clinical, but he is a player who arrives in great goal-scoring positions, reflected in his high xG. If Liverpool start to score goals more freely again, it’ll likely be Salah or Nunez involved. And with Van Dijk and [Ibrahima Konate](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ibrahima-konate-vi83z5XUFDUq6gFF/) (£4.8m) out injured, there is little confidence that Liverpool’s defence will improve soon. Although this may lead us to believe that Nunez is a bad finisher, his career stats tell us differently. He has also created 38 chances with an xA (expected assists) of 3.1. He will be worth buying again — at the right time. He has seven goals and five assists this season, with the highest xG (9.17) among midfielders (which is what FPL classes him as). Things are likely to improve in this regard with the return of injured players such as In attack, last season Liverpool had already scored 52 goals by this point, with an xG of 50.38. They have conceded 28 goals with an expected goals conceded (xGC) of 29.2. After the same number of games last season, they had conceded 18 goals, with an xGC of 19.72.

Manchester City may be forced to work their way through the ranks if found guilty of financial breaches.

The EFL does not allow clubs to ‘immediately enter’ the Championship and they would only find themselves in that league if they are hit with a points deduction that leads to them being relegated. However, if their sureness is misplaced, they are expected to be hit with a significant punishment – depending on the amount and severity of their charges. The Etihad Stadium outfit have been referred to an independent commission after the Premier League announced on Monday that they were charging them with breaking over 100 financial rules.

England's Premier League ignores soccer's biggest ownership ... (The Washington Post)

The English soccer league's accusation that Manchester City is overspending fails to address the larger question of who should be allowed to own teams.

Another important move would be a genuine “fit and proper persons” test, applied consistently and effectively, to stop bad actors taking over clubs in the first place. But this is the issue most in need of attention. One possible outcome would be an independent regulator for soccer that would have authority to decide on ownership of the country’s teams. Supporters of the deal pointed out that Abu Dhabi already has a majority stake in the Manchester City club, while a Qatari fund owns France’s Paris Saint-Germain team (and Qatari investors are [reportedly now planning to buy Manchester United](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-08/manchester-united-shares-surge-as-qatari-report-stokes-m-a-bets?sref=iRPGYJiK)). The Premier League’s new focus on City’s overspending will not head off any action by government, because it doesn’t address the question of team ownership. Perhaps most controversial of all, in April 2021, a group of teams whose owners included private equity barons and sovereign wealth funds — Manchester City among them — made an unsuccessful bid to form a breakaway European super league with a no-relegation, no-promotion model more familiar to U.S. But fans of the game — and the league — should be concerned about what enforcing these rules would really achieve. And in so doing, it would avoid the more foundational question of who should own English football teams. This week, though, England’s Premier League — one of the world’s richest and most watched sports organizations — announced a move that runs contrary to its popular no-holds-barred approach. The move would have, in one swoop, safeguarded these so-called elite clubs and eliminated what makes football exciting. In essence, these rules state that a team should not spend more on players than it collects in revenue. The worst teams get relegated — kicked down to a lower tier where money is much harder to come by.

There would be the potential of some legal costs being reimbursed should City win any legal case, that would be at the discretion of the court, though. But the main charges are the first set of mispresenting their position to the Premier League. We can debate the merits of FFP but that would not excuse the alleged inflation of revenues and hiding of costs. The same goes for Guardiola, who has said he would leave the next day if the club have lied to him, but that hasn't happened as far as he is concerned. If any of the financial charges are proven you would expect punishment greater than a fine, but if e.g. They have been charged by the Premier League for not co-operating fully, although the club claimed 'vast engagement'. Chris Sutton's Premier League predictions v FEET bassist Oli Shasha (BBC Sport)

Chris Sutton takes on FEET bassist and West Ham fan Oli Shasha to pick his winners and losers from this weekend's Premier League games.

I am going for them to win, but it will be a close game - Harry from the band [FEET guitarist Harry Southerton] is a big Villa fan and when we used to live together we'd watch a lot of these kind of games, and in the last couple of seasons Villa always played well. Oli's prediction: There will definitely be goals in this one, but Liverpool will show up and they always seem to play well in this fixture. Oli's prediction: Man City have been playing a bit weirdly for a while now and I think Haaland's goals have masked a lot of issues in the team. I originally went for a 4-1 Liverpool win but my housemate is an Evertonian and he has been trying to get in my ear about how close it will be. There will be a siege mentality at Etihad Stadium and that should create the kind of atmosphere that Guardiola has been asking for recently. Oli's prediction: I remember this fixture last season because we were in the recording studio and I interrupted a drum take by screaming when Arthur Masuaku scored an absolutely bonkers goal to win it with one of the last kicks of the game. I am going for us to win again - we are at home and when our fans get going it's really something, especially in a game like this one. Leicester ended their long wait for a victory when they beat Aston Villa last week but they are not out of trouble yet. Pep Guardiola's side missed a massive chance to put the pressure on Arsenal when they lost at Tottenham last weekend. They are brave on the ball and they always create chances. "Back then there didn't seem to be any enthusiasm from the players, but all of a sudden it changes. 2-1

European Super League's 10 rules they want to implement in attack ... (Mirror.co.uk)

The manifesto published on Thursday morning by A22 Sports Management makes it clear that the new competition would be a rival to the Premier League ...

A22 says the women’s game should be “centre stage” and to “achieve this goal” financing should be “significantly expanded beyond existing contributions.” Centre stage, however, can only mean having a women’s competition that runs parallel. Further, no European club should be forced to dispute resolution systems outside the EU rule of law.” Which is all fine until English clubs, who are no longer bound by European law, are considered. A22 want their competition to be run by the clubs and “not by third parties who benefit without taking any risk”, which is a barely-veiled dig at UEFA. This, A22 says, is “an aspiration.” But without English clubs involved can it really be the case? [Real Madrid](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/real-madrid-cf) ’s Florentino Perez has been banging the drum that kids are no longer engaged in football, unwilling to watch for 90 minutes because they have short attention spans and want to play computer games or go on TikTok. But what happens further down the line? There are clear conclusions about the need for change and the building blocks of how to achieve it.” He said: “Our discussions have made clear clubs are often unable to publicly speak up against a system where the threat of sanctions is used to stifle opposition. A worthwhile, necessary inclusion on the list but light on details. The most distinguishing factor from the plans in 2021. Clubs will only be allowed to spend a fixed percentage of their “annual football-related revenue on player salaries and net transfers” but provisions will be made for smaller clubs who are new to the competition. Again, some more careful language.

Europe's fallen giants can no longer compete with the Premier ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

This time around, there are even more reasons for Premier League clubs to reject overtures from jealous European rivals.

That is why the Super League, the brainchild he has harboured for decades, must be clung to at all costs. That is why a smooth salesman such as Reichart must be dispatched to revive what the Football Supporters’ Federation derides as a “twitching corpse”. The clear implication of this is that any prospect of English involvement in the Super League appears to be dead in the water. What Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus all covet is a world where the biggest match-ups are so seductive, so frequent, that broadcasters are falling over themselves to pay top dollar. European Super League tournament poses no threat to Premier ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Plans announced by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus for new competition have been dismissed by British clubs as a 'reverse Brexit'

It appears that Real and Perez remain the driving force for the ESL project. The advocate-general’s advice is not binding to the ECJ judges but in most cases it is followed. He found that EU competition law was compatible with the restrictions that Uefa and Fifa’s power asserted over football and “proportionate” for achieving Uefa's “legitimate objectives” in line with the EU policy on sport. The advocate-general Athanasios Rantos’ advice to the court was heavily in favour of Uefa’s monopoly position. That will see 36 teams in a single division playing ten group-stage games instead of the current six. A22 have campaigned against the Premier League’s financial dominance of the transfer market in recent months as a means to galvanising grassroots support for its plans. “The Premier League has become the Super League,” A22 claim. The president of Spain’s Liga, Javier Tebas, who is at odds with Perez and his Barcelona counterpart Joan Laporta launched the most outspoken attack on the ESL. “There is reasonably broad agreement on the steps we should take to fix and what has been happening in recent years is not effective, and the system isn’t working so well.” That was the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – all of whom could now potentially face a 30-point penalty under rules agreed since then, were they to join a breakaway league outside the auspices of Uefa. A key factor in A22’s pitch to clubs around Europe is that [The plans announced](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2023/02/09/european-super-league-new-tournament-to-replace-champions-league/) by the ESL’s Madrid-based sister company A22, featuring “60 to 80” teams across more than one division, commit to few details other than no permanent members, and a minimum of 14 games per club, per season.

Football's most divisive project is back with a bang (The Independent)

The Champions League itself could meanwhile become an equivalent to the EFL. Some of this was evident in the very language used by A22's John Hahn in statements ...

A further issue for the football establishment is that there are an increasing number of European lawyers who think that Uefa and Fifa are not fit for purpose. For now, everyone awaits that judgement, and the Super League continue to “engage in dialogue”. The problem is there are no clean solutions, even if the European Court of Justice judgement isn’t as damning on the Super League as many expect. The clubs we speak to there is a pretty clear recognition of what the issues are and how severe they are. They are rightly saying this would be the biggest ever disruption to the structure of European football, as well as an “existential threat” to the Champions League and what Uefa currently are as a body. It is why, despite some being unimpressed by the lack of detail in the plans, up to 50 clubs across the continent are understood to be open to the new Super League. “We want to identify what is pretty obviously happening in European football,” Hahn added. There is also recognition this problem didn’t start yesterday and has built over an extended period of time.” “The facts have been made pretty clear that except in England, European football is in a pretty bad situation and getting worse,” Hahn said. The Super League in its current form is an attempt to create a [Premier League](/topic/premier-league)-style competition that supplants the Champions League. A widespread view remains that it is just a vast refinancing project for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, as well as an attempt to reclaim primacy in a landscape that has changed around them. The Champions League itself could meanwhile become an equivalent to the EFL.

"Competitive integrity and merit-based achievement are fundamental principles of the sport which, if compromised, will cause irreparable damage to the game, to the clubs whose legitimate aspirations underpin the entire football pyramid and to the communities those clubs serve. We will not engage in the creation of new competition formats outside of the Premier League’s Rules." "Football clubs exist for their supporters, whose passion and devotion are not simply a response to the game, but a fundamental and indispensable part of it. "Our talks have also made it clear that clubs often find it impossible to speak out publicly against a system that uses the threat of sanctions to thwart opposition. Reichart wrote: "The foundations of European football are in danger of collapsing. A22 CEO Bernd Reichart states that he gathered feedback from 50 clubs as part of their operation to enable them to discuss the project in a more palatable way than the one presented in 2021. Premier League clubs blast European Super League rebels for ... (The Sun)

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs have ridiculed rebooted “reverse Brexit” plans for a European Super League WITHOUT English teams.Conspirators Real Madrid, Ba.

But Tebas blasted: “Super League is the wolf who disguises himself as a granny to try to fool European football. It is the clubs that bear the entrepreneurial risk in football. But A22 chief Bernd Reichart insisted: “The foundations of European football are in danger of collapsing. To say people are bemused is an understatement.” Basically, that all the problems of European football are due to the power of the Premier League. But it is on life support with the European Court of Justice expected to pronounce the final sentence of execution soon. One of the biggest criticisms was it created a self-selected, closed shop of wealthy and powerful clubs, providing a glass ceiling barrier to the rest of Europe. “This is just another deliberately distorted and misleading attempt to destabilise football’s real stakeholders in their efforts to move things forward in the best interests of the European club game.” Each club would play “a minimum of 14 matches” and the competition would be “based solely on sporting merit”. The European Court of Justice is expected to confirm within weeks that Uefa DOES have the right to ban rebel clubs and players if they try to form a new elite competition. But that would NOT include any Premier League clubs, with A22 using the success of English football as a justification for the new tournament. Now the three rebels are using Madrid-based sports marketing firm A22 to rehash another version of the plan that would see up to 80 clubs leave Uefa to form a new competition.

Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend (The Guardian)

Nayef Aguerd is catching the eye, Sean Dyche faces Jürgen Klopp in the Merseyside derby and Leeds face Man Utd … again.

[wear his heart on his sleeve](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/feb/09/nathan-jones-southampton-fans-manager-analysis) but his latest press conference, in which he cited his Luton side’s expected goals in defence of his managerial credentials, was never likely to go down well with Southampton fans sceptical of his ability to keep them up. While his appointment felt like it was made with one eye on the future – the club hierarchy were keen to stress they had monitored his excellent work at Luton for years – the fact remains that he was brought in with the immediate short-term objective of avoiding relegation, which is becoming more difficult to meet with each passing week. But it was also a reminder that Cairney has a part to play at Fulham. It is 14 years since the first of his two appointments at Bournemouth; he stayed in the role for eight years the second time, and made his name. The short-term, though, is Aston Villa’s visit and the need to shove all extraneous issues aside and focus on a title defence that had a latest hiccup in [last Sunday’s loss at Tottenham](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/feb/05/tottenham-hotspur-manchester-city-premier-league-match-report). [sabbatical before taking the Newcastle job](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/feb/03/why-newcastle-are-so-hard-to-score-against-eddie-howe) has proved particularly significant: learning from Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid is one of the key reasons Newcastle have become so streetwise, and so difficult to score against. With his team chasing Champions League qualification and also readying themselves for a Carabao Cup final against Manchester United, the trip to the south coast should be a moment for Howe to pause and reflect. The odds still favour the hosts on Monday, but good luck to all those [in the post-match press conference](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/feb/07/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-strange-ritualistic-power-of-the-press-conference) if Klopp’s side, like Arsenal last weekend, succumb to the grinding might of Dycheismo. [a goalless draw at Goodison Park](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/sep/03/everton-liverpool-premier-league-match-report) in September. And would Leeds still be in relegation trouble as they prepare to meet Manchester United for the second time in five days? While their only other league defeat – [the 3-1 loss to Manchester United](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/sep/04/manchester-united-arsenal-premier-league-match-report) at Old Trafford in September – could be rationalised as a setback against direct rivals at a ground where they have often struggled, they will be bitterly disappointed to have fallen into Sean Dyche’s earthworm-infested trap. But Vieira, a World Cup winner himself, knows that his side must toughen up in central midfield if they are to start progressing up the table.

Our weekend finishes under the lights at Anfield as Liverpool lock horns with fierce rivals Everton. They start as heavy Whilst a relegation scrap still seems unlikely, Patrick Viera will undoubtedly demand a better second half of the season from his side, who are certainly missing their usual spark in the absence of Wilfried Zaha. While any decision would be informed by the Premier League’s legal terms and relevant stakeholders, and though clubs could lobby the board members, they have no direct right to influence a decision. The Premier League’s first priority will be to establish proof of its case to the independent commission. Although PSG were one of eight clubs to be fined last year by UEFA for failing to meet break-even requirements, there is not currently an open case against them nor an investigation into potential breaches in their domestic league. At home and abroad, their rivals are just as pleased that it has reached this point. Others would risk destroying themselves by destroying their relationships with the clubs they need to retain a compelling product. Like City, they have won an appeal against European football’s governing body at the Court of Arbitration for Sport over alleged breaches. It has been noted, for example, that while City’s fate will be determined by an independent panel, the sporting proceedings against Juventus have been brought directly by the Italian Football Federation. “We want success.” Newcastle are not alone in believing that City’s football operations — from their academy to their recruitment to their facilities — is best in class. It is a widely held belief not just in English football, but across the continent too. “We’ve denounced these practices for years and this is a long time in coming.” I was thinking, ‘God, I can’t wait for our guys to get their trophies, I can’t wait to deliver what the fans really deserve,” she said. Their surprise, though, was that the day had finally come.

In allowing a competitive league match to be turned into a lifetime achievement awards’ ceremony, the NBA demeaned their own product. Fantasy Premier League: Solving bench dilemmas for Double ... (The Athletic)

We arrive at Double Gameweek 23 with a headache over who to bench, with fringe players having the favourable fixtures.

[Harry Kane](https://theathletic.com/football/player/harry-kane-47vQtg5y5Ub8iFqb/) (£11.7m) joined the [Premier League](https://theathletic.com/football/premier-league/)’s elite goalscorers with his 200th goal against Manchester City at the weekend and [Tottenham](https://theathletic.com/football/team/tottenham-hotspur/) play his favourite opponents, Leicester City, on Saturday. A home game against [Nottingham Forest](https://theathletic.com/football/team/nottingham-forest/) carries high appeal, with his two goals and seven assists this season, although Fulham have failed to score in their last three league fixtures. [Bruno Fernandes](https://theathletic.com/football/player/bruno-fernandes-qr6VV7sJwbrbqULf/) (£9.9m) and [Marcus Rashford](https://theathletic.com/football/player/marcus-rashford-xgQlXcNj79jwXiD4/) (£7.2m) have each returned in five consecutive gameweeks and Fernandes now being on their penalties is important to note. [Kieran Trippier](https://theathletic.com/football/player/kieran-trippier-BrjARZjGyouR7oDx/) (£6.1m) should be a lock in our starting line-up given his ownership, attacking potential and ability to amass bonus points. It becomes particularly troublesome to bench attacking players who are their team’s penalty taker, but Fulham’s Mitrovic has a poor record from the spot recently. [Brentford](https://theathletic.com/football/team/brentford/)’s [Ivan Toney](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ivan-toney-VfYkRN3FErfXXTZN/) and [Ollie Watkins](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ollie-watkins-9nwANNnY4TGed61H/) of [Aston Villa](https://theathletic.com/football/team/aston-villa/) moves them even further down the priority list for a start this weekend, particularly with those games coming away from home. You should also opt to play your other Newcastle defensive assets over those from [Manchester United](https://theathletic.com/football/team/manchester-united/) — Erik ten Hag’s men are on a good run of defensive form, but [Casemiro](https://theathletic.com/football/player/casemiro-wQ6Q8xViV8kqizDc/) will be a huge miss after picking up a three-match suspension with his red card last weekend. We will get such instances in gameweeks 29, 34 and 37. [Chelsea](https://theathletic.com/football/team/chelsea/) and [Brighton](https://theathletic.com/football/team/brighton-and-hove-albion/) defences narrowly over Manchester United’s, with [Reece James](https://theathletic.com/football/player/reece-james-GKa1YfGdueMrjfBr/) (£5.7m) providing an interesting route back into Chelsea’s defence. Price should reflect quality in FPL, after all. [Leicester](https://theathletic.com/football/team/leicester-city/)’s struggling [Danny Ward](https://theathletic.com/football/player/danny-ward-WajkB4rCCNiRZcEu/). [Arsenal](https://theathletic.com/football/team/arsenal/) and [Manchester City](https://theathletic.com/football/team/manchester-city/) — which other five get the nod?
