'You' Season 4 Review: A Risky Reinvention for Joe Goldberg Pays Off (Collider.com)

Hello, You. It's been far too long. Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), resident serial killer with a penchant for baseball caps and pretentious literature, ...

At the end of Season 2, we learned that Love is not who Joe thinks she is – and certainly not who we thought she was either. You Season 4 Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix. The last five episodes of You Season 4 are Badgley’s most impressive performance to date. Season 4 of You is bold and unexpected with twists and turns that are simply wicked. You is the master of twists, and Season 4 is no exception. Yes, it’s fun watching Joe scramble to pin down his own mysterious stalker, but it lacks that extra spark that kept us on the edge of our seats the last three seasons. The second half of Season 4 is admittedly stronger than the first. Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), resident serial killer with a penchant for baseball caps and pretentious literature, is back for the newest season of You – but this time, he’s got a new name, new city, and new objective. All of that said, however, Season 4 proved that You can still be good without Love because of one key reason: it finally broke its [tried-and-true formula](https://collider.com/you-season-4-repetitive/). There are certainly some standouts in You’s new supporting cast – Charlotte Ritchie gives a beautiful depth to her character Kate, who may be a member of the elite, but has an emotional backstory that balances out her initial “ice queen” act. He is surrounded by a new cast of eccentric characters – a group of friends who all met as students at Oxford. The start of Season 4 sees Joe in London with a brand-new identity: Professor Jonathan Moore, a college instructor of American short fiction.

You season 4 review: A muddled British whodunit (The A.V. Club)

Part one of the Netflix thriller's latest installment finds Joe Goldberg flailing (and killing, of course) amid the U.K. elite.

[The White Lotus](https://www.avclub.com/tv/reviews/the-white-lotus)’ Lukas Gage plays her partner, Adam, and makes the most of his one-note character. He’s not wholly innocent, of course, and finds himself in a bloody mess of his own making once again. In her absence, he’s the sole notable performer of season four so far. [Netflix](https://www.avclub.com/what-to-watch-on-netflix-best-tv-shows-1848758095) (although the streamer’s decision to split the season is a ridiculous choice), which brought new life to the Lifetime original after picking it up for season two in 2019. The hunter becomes the hunted once the real killer takes a page out of [these burning questions](https://www.avclub.com/you-season-4-burning-questions-netflix-tv-thriller-1850065317), however, which is kind of a problem if you’re breaking it into two parts. One of the strongest hooks of previous seasons was Badgley and Pedretti’s incredibly chaotic back-and-forths. American Iconoclasts of the Short Story, of course. The man is drawn to it, whether he’s living in a New York City walkup, an affluent Los Angeles suburb with his family, or a spacious London loft by himself. Still, with the number of bodies he leaves behind every time he runs, how long can this go on? He’s not a swoon-worthy anti-hero; he’s a straight-up villain. Each season provides character development and backstory as he sincerely thinks he’s trying to improve.

What happened to Marienne in You season 4? (Radio Times)

Marienne Bellamy, played by Tati Gabrielle, is back for You season 4, but does Penn Badgley's Joe Goldberg find her after all? Read on to find out.

Netflix is also available on [Sky Glass](https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?id=489797&clickref=radiotimes-1774390&awinmid=11005&p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sky.com%2Fglass) and [Virgin Media Stream](https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?id=489797&clickref=radiotimes-1774390&awinmid=6399&p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.virginmedia.com%2Ftv%2Fstreaming). The rest of the series is mainly concerned with Joe facing the Eat The Rich killer who also somehow knows his true identity – but will Marienne appear in the series again? But he tasks Joe with one last thing: because Marienne knows Joe is alive, he now has to kill her. The last we saw of Joe in season 3 was wandering around Paris, a place Marienne had mentioned to Joe about going earlier in the season. He has his first flashback and explains that he thought the distance he had travelled would count for something to Marienne. After seeing Marienne, he explains that his only plan was to get out of London but he's approached by Elliot Tannenberg (Adam James), an employee of Ray Quinn's, Joe's former father-in-law. He's wondering whether he did commit the murder or not and in his narrative monologue, is penning it as if to Marienne. She runs into an old warehouse building, hiding in a disused room and thinks she's hidden away from Joe, but he confronts her in the stairwell. But in fact, we learn pretty early on (as in, in season 4's first episode) what happened to her. As previously mentioned, Marienne got caught up in the Love and Joe saga – and it very nearly got her killed. Although it looked like Love was going to kill Marienne, she had a change of heart and thus, Marienne's whereabouts were unknown going into season 4. But the librarian had enough problems of her own to contend with before Joe's arrival.

You season 4 part 1 on Netflix review: this schlocky, murdery drama ... (Evening Standard)

The fourth installment of Penn Badgeley's turn as his old Gossip Girl character gone bad is the perfect guilty pleasure.

As a result, this season’s Joe is more likeable and a touch pathetic, and it’s exemplified in the power switch up, with Joe being the one who’s stalked this time around – possibly by a member of the very same friendship group he’s just joined. You is hot trash, but it’s also riveting, and we will keep watching. Yes, it was fun being a bit scared of him during the first and second season, but the writing couldn’t toe that line for four seasons and now the internet has reluctantly ended up rooting for him. Luckily, the writers know this, and speed through it a little faster than previous seasons. Season four of You starts with a very necessary location change. If you enjoyed the previous seasons, you will love this.

You, season 4 review: Netflix binge-fest meets English murder mystery (Metro)

There's a recap detailing that Joe (Penn Badgley, perfectly balancing reserved charm with creepily obsessive serial-killer tendencies) killed his wife in ...

The writing is so true to its world, so energetic, that You becomes escapist, binge-watching nonsense. In literally the next scene, Joe is sitting with a pile of Christie novels. It takes on dark material with a shrug of the shoulders. Smashing through the fourth wall like this makes You deliriously unrealistic, exceptionally annoying – and brilliantly self-aware. That’s why the social set Joe is embroiled in, full of toffs fiddling on their Insta and crying fake tears, feels like it’s lifted straight from the worst excesses of The Royals – and yet it doesn’t matter. Basically, faintly exasperated, darkly amused and never short of a snide quip.

You Season 3 had Joe chasing Marienne to Paris, but what happens to her in Season 4 of the hit Netflix show?

Or perhaps the investigator could tell that Marienne hadn’t been murdered, so he went to finish the job himself. An investigator hired by the Quinn family discovers Joe – however, he’s willing to help Joe get by with a new identity in London. Joe tries to explain himself, stating that he would never hurt her, but Marienne understandably doesn’t believe him. Of course, Joe goes after her, and actually manages to locate her at said fair in London. But what’s in store for Joe (Penn Badgley) and the object of his affection Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) this time? Marienne and Joe ended up becoming an item during You Season 3, despite outside factors.

'You' season 4 review: can Joe solve this murder in the members ... (NME.com)

Posh people dominate this reinvented whodunnit cum satire of the British class system. Should you watch You season 4 on Netflix?

In one of the season’s best twists, Joe discovers that Adam isn’t quite so overbearing when he thinks no one is watching. I’m in a whodunnit – the lowest form of literature,” is how he phrases it. Presuming that he killed the hapless aristocrat because, well, he has form in that area, Joe disposes of the body by putting it through an industrial woodchipper and dropping the remnants in the London sewage system. Joe wakes up after a heavy night at an exclusive Soho members’ club called Sundry House – yes, really – and finds a dead body in the fancy South Kensington flat that comes with his job. Also super-posh is the social circle that Badgley’s Joe Goldberg infiltrates now he is masquerading as Jonathan Moore, a reserved literature professor complete with beard and tweed blazer. If anything, this season is the most ridiculous yet, mainly because it’s set in an upscale London that bears little resemblance to the real thing.

In 'You' Season 4, Joe Goldberg Is No Longer in Control (The New York Times)

The Netflix thriller's latest episodes have its antihero, played by Penn Badgley, on the back foot as he navigates the world of London's ultrarich.

In London, “not only are there people who have a ridiculous amount of money and have no idea what’s going on in the world, but they have titles,” Gamble said. “We never felt any responsibility to reform Joe, to give him a particularly happy ending,” Gamble said. It’s an evolution that Badgley is also keenly aware of: Joe is now “managing to grow emotionally, while not growing at all,” he said in a recent video interview. In Joe’s twisted mind, “he seems to actually respect her more,” he added. The stories he told himself with previous love interests, like Beck in Season 1 or Love, “stopped in those scenes with Marienne,” Gamble said. Setting the fourth season in London was, in part, a practical one: Paris would have been more complicated in terms of language and logistics. The season sees Joe “walking himself closer and closer to a self-awareness that he really won’t know what to do with,” Gamble said. Ahead of each new season, the production team ask themselves, “what kind of thriller we’re going to put him in,” Gamble said. His plans, however, are quickly scuppered when members of the ultrarich group of friends he resentfully joins start getting killed, and Joe must find the murderer before he’s framed for their crimes. (“In a more just society, we would all see Joe as problematic and not be interested in the show, but that’s not the society we live in,” Badgley [told The New York Times in 2019](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/arts/television/penn-badgley-you-netflix.html).) Not only is it set in London, but we soon find Joe on the back foot, being manipulated by a mysterious enemy who may be an even more accomplished killer. Marienne fled to Paris with her daughter — and Joe vowed to find her.

'You' season 4 finds Joe's solitary new life in London disrupted by a murder and a new pack of acquaintances. Read EW's recap of episodes 1 through 5.

Rhys expects him to be grateful that Roald's trussed and ready to be posthumously framed for all the murders. He conks Joe in the head with a rifle, and Joe wakes up chained in Hampsie's dungeon. Kate tells them all to back off, and everyone's cruelly amused that Joe doesn't know the truth about her: she'd be first to the guillotine in a revolution. Kate takes the opportunity to come clean to Joe: her father's one of the most powerful and most evil men on the planet. Phoebe bursts into Kate's room and perches like a queen on the trunk with the body, and Joe and Kate try to hold it together as she tells them that she caught Adam with a servant. You texts again, and at first Joe wants to lash out at this upending of his life, but he holds back, realizing that what you wants is a kindred spirit. Roald tells Kate to quit playing with boys and to claim her place in the world. Joe saves the day with his observation skills, leading Kate to the vandal thanks to the hostel key he saw sticking out of her pocket. Joe has no memory of doing a murder, and he curses the whole time he's dragging the body to the boot of his borrowed car. Adam warns Joe that Malcolm's a blackmailer, and Joe realizes this honestly makes it unlikely that Adam's the murderer. To avoid the paparazzi, Joe slips in through the back with a woman who knows the door code. Phoebe invites him to Simon's gallery opening and orders him to select a suit from the closet of freebies she gets from designers.

Review: 'You' turns the tables on Penn Badgley in somewhat ... (USA TODAY)

And in its fourth season, "You" is beginning to turn from sinister to soap opera. Penn Badgley's psychotic stalker and murderer Joe Goldberg has his own stalker ...

It doesn't help that the "eat the rich" subgenre has been done and redone on TV and film lately, much better than "You" manages here, at least in the first part of the season. The slice of British upper-crust society "You" slips Joe into this time around seems more of a caricature, perhaps a pitfall of transporting an American series abroad. A series intently fascinated with books and literature makes its inspiration well known from the outset, as Joe peruses a stack of Agatha Christie novels, searching for a formula that will help him find out who the "you" is. Of course, his life never stays quiet, and after one drunken night out with members of the upper class and a mysterious death, Joe is involved in a new crime spree and is drawn to yet another woman, icy Kate (Charlotte Ritchie, "Call the Midwife"). And in its fourth season, "You" is beginning to turn from sinister to soap opera. It might as well hit the audience over the head with a copy of "The Mousetrap."

Rhys was in the running for mayor and Joe was concerned about what he would do with such power in his hands. He wanted Joe to kill Roald and then pin all of the murders on Roald so he could not defend himself.

You Season Four Review (BuzzFeed News)

But the breakneck speed of this season — on an already marathonable show — does warrant some unease: This season feels like You is racing toward the emotional climax of Joe’s story. The genius of You has always been knowing when and how to subvert genre to make it exponentially more compelling. All of Joe’s previous indiscretions (bodies) start to catch up to him when he’s targeted by the hottest new serial killer on the block, the Eat the Rich Killer. And regardless of where you end up placing your bets, it’s just straight-up satisfying to see Joe bested repeatedly, a loving reminder the noose is always tightening. The absolute best change of the season, however, is when You fully embraces a genre shift by diving headfirst into murder mystery tropes. To be clear, this is a nonsexual connection (sorry to the queers, I look forward to the fanfic), but there’s an interesting mirror between Joe’s relationship with Rhys and his relationship with Kate.

You Season 4 Cast: Kate Actor Charlotte Ritchie's Best Roles (Den of Geek)

As Charlotte Ritchie stars in Season 4 of You, don't miss these highlights from her other TV and film roles, from Grantchester to Ghosts, Doctor Who and ...

[Ghosts](https://www.denofgeek.com/ghosts/), it’s Charlotte Ritchie. Highlights include her ingenious attempt to [trap a rat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KqQ-pYfaFQ) and, as you can see above, crawling and scurrying around a golf course like a delighted cat for hours on end. It’s a particularly chilling episode thanks to [Ritchie’s nuanced, deceitful and resourceful](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/doctor-who-series-11-resolution-review/) character, who continues fighting against the Daleks’ control as they force her to do increasingly evil and destructive things. Her stint as a contestant on Series 11 of Taskmaster was an utterly joyous dose of pure chaos, and despite For a certain slightly older generation, Charlotte Ritchie will always be midwife Barbara, one of the most beloved characters in Call The Midwife’s long history. Charlotte Ritchie is brilliantly sharp and wry as Alison, the friend who tries to lure the other two away from the game to actually participate in the real world every now and then, and there are also excellent guest appearances from the likes of Starstruck’s Rose Matafeo. For a certain generation, Charlotte Ritchie will always be Oregon, the naive, hopeless student trying to hide her privileged background from her rebellious new best friend Vod in hit university-based comedy-drama Fresh Meat. Her character Alison is the glue that holds the entire concept together: her accident in episode one means she’s the only human who can see and interact with the hilarious family of ghosts that inhabit Button House, her newly inherited home. Charlotte Ritchie joined the cast in Series 7 last year as Bonnie, a widow who becomes one of the vicar’s love interests, beginning a tempestuous romance which is a pleasing distraction from the fact that this tiny Cambridgeshire village seems to attract a wildly disproportionate number of murders. If you’re new to You, it’s the story of bookshop manager Joe Goldberg, who has a pathological tendency to develop dangerous infatuations with women, which usually end in lots of bloodshed and/or a prolonged stay in a plexiglass book vault. And in Season 4, Charlotte Ritchie gets the unenviable honour of playing the latest obsession of creepy-yet-handsome, ‘I just can’t help falling in love with (and then probably killing) you’ Joe, aka Penn Badgley. This award-winning Channel 4/Netflix comedy drama is a semi-autobiographical work by Mae Martin, who stars as themself, alongside Charlotte Ritchie as their girlfriend George.

Where Was 'You' Season 4 Filmed? Every London Location Where ... (Women's Health)

'You' season 4, starring Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg, just dropped. Here's every London location this season was filmed, from the university to his flat.

Another big location will be The Bargehouse, which will become Joe's neighbor's art gallery, per [Glamour U.K](https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/you-season-4-filming-locations#:~:text=Parts%20of%20You%20season%20four,Professor%20Jonathan%20Moore%20teaches%20at). You Season 4 Part 1 Ending Explained: Who is Joe's Stalker? (Den of Geek)

Joe Goldberg returns for another rousing game of cat-and-mouse on You Season 4 — only this time, he's the mouse.

Eventually, Joe is shocked to find that Rhys is both his stalker as well as the killer. That’s not going away anytime soon.) And now that Rhys has his number, he’s ready to deliver a dose of Joe Goldberg justice. Once he’s back in London, the news is aflutter with the news of the latest killing … There’s never been such a disconnect in the way that Joe presents himself to the outside world and what he’s really thinking in the innermost reaches of his devious brain. Thanks to his star pupil Nadia, Joe has already read “Good Man, Cruel World,” Rhys’s captivating memoir of how he went from rags to riches, pulling himself out of a childhood of trauma and poverty and ending up in the company of high society. Under the principle of Chekov’s gun — a gun in the first act will resurface by the third — it seems that Marianne will somehow come into play later in the season. Why the detective accepted a simple image of a locket as proof of her murder is perplexing, but whatever. The first half of the season establishes the cat-and-mouse game between Joe and his stalker, even revealing the man behind the shady, disappearing texts in the final few moments of the Part 1 finale. Joe’s focus immediately shifts as he scrambles to try and figure out who is stalking him, why, and what they have planned for him in the long run. When we first check in with Joe, he’s living a pretty normal life, working as a professor of literature and spending his nights curled up with a book and a cuppa in his fancy flat. It’s a delightful twist that upends the typical You narrative, putting Joe Goldberg on the defensive instead of the offensive. [You](https://www.denofgeek.com/you/), Joe (Penn Badgley) finds himself on the other side of the Atlantic.

You season 4's attempts to redeem Joe Goldberg just don't work (digitalspy.com)

You on Netflix season 4 review, does Joe's new redemption arc work for the hit show?

He's doing his best to convince himself, and the viewer at home, that this is a new trajectory. But what seems clear from season four, part one, is that the show has backed itself into a corner. This seed was first sown in season three, which enabled Joe to paint himself as some sort of victim held captive by his obsessive and controlling wife (oh, the irony). Where we are really hit over the head with this idea is in Joe's decision to let Marienne go. In this way, his redemption is disingenuous. But he's looking away, mostly, and trying to prove that he's a better person now.
