Soderbergh has always liked to subvert expectations, and here he seems bent on short-circuiting a lot of the pleasures we've come to expect from the Magic Mike movies. The play is a dreary-looking period drama called Isabel Ascendant, and Max thinks it needs a massive contemporary overhaul, with more heat and more urgency — and, yes, an ensemble of male strippers. And so she and Mike begin recruiting the best and hottest dancers they can find, none of whom have ever stripped in public before, though they're game enough to give it a try. Max, impressed by the passion and artistry of Mike's dancing, asks him to come back to London with her. Three years later, the director Gregory Jacobs leaned into the erotic spectacle of it all with the exuberant [Magic Mike XXL](https://www.npr.org/2015/07/03/418841406/pop-culture-happy-hour-no-250-magic-mike-xxl-and-catastrophe), placing women's desires front and center in a way that made even the first movie look staid. Mike gives her what she asks for, starting with a lap dance and building to what looks like an elaborate home-gymnastics routine.

Best Channing Tatum Movies, From 'Magic Mike' to 'Haywire' (Collider.com)

As we get ready for Magic Mike's Last Dance, let's reminisce on the best of Channing Tatum's career.

[White House Down](https://collider.com/tag/white-house-down/) is certainly the more comedic. Tatum’s performance is what gets the audience rooting for these heroes; it’s empowering to see the siblings Jimmy (Tatum), Logan (Adam Driver), and Millie (Riley Keough) overcome their squabbles and rob the wealthy class that’s neglected them for years. [21 Jump Street](https://collider.com/tag/21-jump-street/) is a film that satirizes its own existence; Tatum and his co-star Jonah Hill are allowed to let the audience in on the joke that the idea of rebooting the classic series is completely cynical and that the inherent premise makes absolutely no sense. [Magic Mike](https://collider.com/tag/magic-mike/) expecting to see a trashy stripper movie, you may have been surprised to see Soderbergh essentially make a 1970s character drama about the ramifications of the economic crisis. As the former inside trader Martin Taylor, Tatum creates a very endearing relationship with his wife, Emily (Rooney Mara), that is immediately disrupted by the criminal conspiracy that He shoots bad guys and delivers one-liners like a pro, but it’s the father-daughter relationship that Tatum has with Joey King that truly elevates the story. He’s also unafraid to take chances on projects that are totally weird; between doing the bizarre buddy cop satire Comrade Detective on Amazon Prime, voicing a haughty version of Superman in [The LEGO Movie](https://collider.com/tag/the-lego-movie/) franchise, and popping up as a disgruntled passenger in [ Bullet Train,](https://collider.com/tag/bullet-train/) Tatum is never unmemorable. Joe](https://collider.com/tag/g-i-joe/) franchise, Tatum quickly proved that his talents extended far beyond his good looks. [Steven Soderbergh](https://collider.com/steven-soderbergh-underrated-movies/) who understood what a quietly ambitious actor Tatum was. Leave it Tatum to give the best cameo performance in a film that’s packed with cameos. And the star is set to take his final bow in the Magic Mike franchise with [Magic Mike's Last Dance](https://collider.com/magic-mikes-last-dance-review/), which hits theaters today. [Channing Tatum](https://collider.com/tag/channing-tatum/) started his career, it initially seemed like he would fall into the same category as any number of generic young actors that Hollywood would try to sell as new potential movie stars.

Jus' Funnin: In praise of the Channing Tatum smirk (Little White Lies)

The man who is Magic Mike possesses one of the most brilliant acting power moves on the block.

To be honest, it’s reached the point where story and character development barely matter, as long as Tatum gets to smirk his ass off. [Magic Mike’s Last Dance](https://lwlies.com/reviews/magic-mikes-last-dance/), is probably a mid-table work within his illustrious cine-corpus, but his presence is more than enough to paste over some of the most egregious formal cracks. His modus operandi as a performer is for the character to exist as someone you would be endeared to rather than be impressed by (although there are obvious impressive aspects of his physical turns as Magic Mike). Yet, at the same time, they operate as an anchor to some element of hard realism and not only Tatum’s deep immersion into a character, but his connection to the other characters. It would be understandable to read it as a vicarious erotic fascination, which is something that self-aware Tatum plays with and reflects back at his audience in his trio of It’s a purse of the lips and light tensing of the jowl muscles, often combined with a rakish raising of the eyebrows.

'Magic Mike 3' review: Channing Tatum strips down for a tamer but ... (USA TODAY)

Channing Tatum's ex-stripper shows new maturity with the usual impressive dance moves in Steven Soderbergh's trilogy closer 'Magic Mike's Last Dance.'

The film is packed with callbacks, cameos and all the dancing you’d want in a “Magic Mike,” even if a bit less rambunctious on the whole. Everybody grows up – even Magic Mike – but it doesn’t mean we have to give up being ourselves along the way. Soderbergh and Tatum, who also produces, have pulled dancers from the She wants him to modernize it so the main female character doesn’t have to choose between independence and love – while also being surrounded by nontoxic masculinity – so they enlist a variety of exceedingly talented male dancers for the show. Aside from their hot and bothered first meeting, the dynamic between the two lead characters never quite gels. But here's something fans of the first two films’ more raucous, stripper-ific sequences may not want to hear: Tamer and what one could arguably call classier, this movie trades bromantic machismo and beefcake high jinks for female empowerment and character maturity, though still boasting hunky dudes and clothes being ripped off.

Movie review: 'Last' hurrah for Channing Tatum's 'Magic Mike' (The Patriot Ledger)

Steven Soderbergh directs Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek in 'Magic Mike's Last Dance,' the final film in the male stripper trilogy, opening Friday.

Although Tatum is stage shy for most of the movie, and busts few moves, he certainly sticks the landing in a steamy last dance involving lots of water and a ballerina (Kylie Shea). When it finally comes time for the grand finale, the naked truth is that nothing happening in the first two-thirds of the film matters - at all. The show is off; no, it’s on; and now it’s off again. Nothing wrong seeing the world of stripping through a female gaze, but Soderbergh, back in the director’s chair after skipping the last entry, exiles her for most of the third act. In “Last Dance,” Carolin’s script (he wrote all three movies) has no room for exotic dancer Mike Lane’s (Tatum) roguish stripper pals (paging Joe Manganiello’s Big Dick Richie!), as it thrusts a woman (Salma Hayek Pinault) to the forefront. Yet, in its third - and seemingly final - installment, “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the plot - not the dancing - takes center stage.

Magic Mike's Last Dance review: What the Channing Tatum film ... (Vox)

The third Magic Mike movie is silly, sexy, and all about supply and demand.

Part of the appeal is simply that he’s trying to do it. Even as Soderbergh, Carolin, and Tatum explore a system of want that is arguably illogical and likely impossible, it is respectful to that system. [Magic Mike XXL](https://www.vox.com/2015/6/30/8870077/magic-mike-xxl-review) (a stroke of titular genius), in which “female desire” comes to the fore, and explodes a bit, definitionally. Like a dancer, the movie knows that once those elements are lost, they’re harder to regain than they were to gain in the first place. What the Magic Mike movies have only leaned further and further into is that it can also be uniquely fun. The movies have always understood that in this system, demand — desire — is actually the hard part. There’s not just the trick of creating desire, there’s the undertaking of maintaining it. Mike has lost his furniture business to the pandemic, he owes money to his friends, and Maxandra (Salma Hayek Pinault, playing a ridiculous role with a lot of fun, pathos, and magenta) is paying him an absurd amount of money to put on a show. This flouts the script of the show-within-the-show of Last Dance, which very explicitly posits that one of the primary things a woman might want is “not just one man.” “Lots of guys” is a bedrock premise, employed by teen magazines, [first Magic Mike movie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4eqIV-XMnA) is “about the economy, actually.” This was maybe the first thing the series really understood about female desire, the eventual subject of its trilogy, which concludes with [Magic Mike’s Last Dance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBIGdw-BRxw). The gang, now more explicitly styled as a fun team of buddies, embarks on a road trip of multi-demographic proportions, bringing joy to hooting and hollering groups of older white women, Black women, and queer people — which is to say that “female desire” is best understood as a useful shorthand for something perhaps even more complicated and interesting, without pausing to get into the ins and outs of gender. The Magic Mike trilogy is about the economics of female desire, actually.
