Middlesbrough are in South Wales this afternoon as they take on Cardiff City looking to make it three wins in a row to consolidate their top-six hopes.
Said just after that Boro had to be patient in the wait for their moment and goal with Cardiff playing in the manner they are. McGree slides the ball across and Archer gets a cushioned touch with his back to goal and Forss is then well-positioned running onto it to smash it home. Hackney pokes it into McGree's path and he flicks wonderfully first-time into Forss' path who gives it straight back and spins into the box. Superb again from McGree in making the moment to unlock the defence with his craft. It opens in front of him and he picks a delightful ball in behind for Archer to run onto, round the GK and finish. On his right foot though, the ball just ran away from him as he went to hit it and he slices it wide. He drives into the box and slides across goal as Steffen dives at his feet, leaving Kaba with a tap in. Giles' cross is cut out but McGree nips in and takes the ball from a Cardiff defender in their box. He crosses well and Forss runs onto it with a thunderous header, but it's just the wrong side of the post. Great play from Boro down the left with McGree eventually sending Giles down the left. Slows it down to allow other get up with him, plays a one-two with Howson and then plays a lovely ball across the penalty area passed two Cardiff defenders and into McGree's path to finish it off. He gets a foot on the attempted clearance, but it thankfully doesn't lead to anything dangerous for Boro.
Ryan Allsop 5. Quite how much he could do for the goals is arguable, but just never looked totally convincing. Mahlon Romeo 5 ...
Great for him to get a goal on his home debut, but his hold-up play struggled. Another who threatened to cause problems, but in reality didn't add much at the top end of the pitch on this occasion. Might have done better with a header on goal, but it bounced over the bar. Really smart to intercept Zack Steffen's pass before setting up Kaba for his goal. A welcome return, all things considered. Positive to see him back.

"I was proud of the efforts the boys put in and they got their reward. It was a game of two halves in terms of our style, in the first half we played some of the best stuff since I came here. "I'm really pleased, we knew it would be a hard game and we expected it, but we were ready for it. We tried to have a different energy and mentality in the second half and we competed more. I have maximum optimism, we just need to work." "This is a tough challenge and I am not a magician.

[He said](https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/middlesbrough-underestimate-cardiff-sheffield-united-26202186): “Especially when a team is near the bottom, you can find they have that extra bit of drive and motivation to try and fight their way out of the situation. “We’ve got to be ready to adapt to something new given they have the new manager. “That doesn’t make the game any easier or harder, it’s just the next one for us and we’ll approach it with the same consistency we have every other.” “You can’t hide from where we are in the table and what opportunities lie ahead, but we have to just focus on the next game. “Teams have a style of play, and what they’re good at in terms of their strengths. “But everybody is fighting for something, and we have that drive and motivation as well, to win the game and help our own season goals.

Substitute Ryan Wintle plonked a lovely corner into the middle of the box and it looked for all the money in the world like Cedric Kipre would bury the header. A wicked cross was rolled across the box and it found Chuba Akpom at the far post. He showed a fleetness of foot to belt it past Ryan Allsop and into the roof of the net to hand the hosts the lead. The stadium emptied straight after, with seven minutes of injury time to play. Just minutes later, another substitute, Andy Rinomhota, cracked a shot off from 30 yards but it whistled past the upright. Robinson sprinted into the box and unselfishly squared the ball to evade the onrushing Steffen. The Bluebirds then found their feet a little and gave as good as they got for 10 minutes or. Callum O'Dowda, uncharacteristically, it must be said, played an errant pass into the middle of the pitch and, suddenly, Cardiff looked vulnerable. Riley McGree was released on the right and he drilled a low ball into the box, where it found Archer, whose cool lay-off presented Forss with an opportunity to strike. In front of their home supporters, Cardiff had less than 20 percent of the ball inside the first 15 minutes. Sory Kaba scored on his home debut, but only after Marcus Forss had handed the visitors a lead earlier in the first half. A late Wigan Athletic goal, against relegation rivals Huddersfield Town, is the only reason the Bluebirds are not in the relegation zone.

City started the second period brightly, forcing a chance through right-back Mahlon Romeo, who crossed into the area for Kaba, who struck over with an acrobatic effort. In another positive attack, substitute Andy Rinomhota drove an effort from distance, which flew just wide of the post. The visitors had an early chance, as the ball was cut back to striker Forss in the box, whose shot was charged down by the City defence. After an end-to-end first-half, the visitors went into the interval with a 2-1 lead. With 38 minutes on the clock, Boro went back ahead, as Hayden Hackney slotted Archer through, who rounded Ryan Allsop and fired home. City immediately pushed forward in search of an equaliser and went close through Sheyi Ojo, whose dangerous free-kick was collected by goalkeeper Zack Steffen.
